Aquafeed Horizons to focus on processing andformulation advancesThe 11th Aquafeed Horizons Asia Conference, taking place on the first day of VICTAMAsia 2018, will bring together fish and shrimp feed processors, nutritionists, buyers andother industry professionals from throughout the region and beyond, to learn about thelatest developments in aquafeed production.

Extrusion technologyGenerally, fish feed, and increasinglyshrimp feed, is produced by extrusion. Thiscomplex and nuanced technology is thefocus of the processing talks at AquafeedHorizons Asia 2018. Different types of feedare subject to different demands, forexample, the feed’s functionality on fishfarms in terms of floatability or sinkabilityand the pellets’ durability to assistmechanical handling without generatingfines. Changing trends in raw materialsalso give new challenges to ensure thatextrusion technologies and process controlare developed to adapt accordingly,Thomas Ellegaard Mohr will tell delegates.According to Rob Strathman, factoryperformance is hindered by inflexible andunreliable hardware and software used inthe extrusion systems of today. However,we can redesign the systems of the future,allowing significant improvements in factoryperformance to be realized. He will pointout that he need to find efficiency in everyaspect of production has driven othermanufacturing industries to dramaticallychange course. The future of aquafeedproduction, he will say, will be digital. Micro aquafeeds, in the of 0.5mm to

1.2mm dia. range, are required in thenursery phase of aquaculture. Theirmanufacture involves a series ofmeticulous steps to be followed, from theselection of high quality ingredients tospecific grinding, sifting, mixing, precisiontwin screw extrusion and optimal dryingprocess. Ramesh Gangatharan will explainhow advanced computer controls, variablefrequency drives, unique die designs andspecially selected dryer screens allcontribute to a smooth process at highproduction capacities. In-line moisture anddensity monitoring systems can be fixed atcritical points to monitor the production

process so as to minimize production of outof spec product and to have a final productwhich is uniform in size, shape and density. Recent research on the drying of extruded

feed, particularly as related to technicalproduct quality, have identified aconnection between drying parametersand mechanical durability. The initial phaseof drying is important to avoid early andspatially uneven glass transition followingevaporative cooling. It follows that high airvelocity, high temperature and highhumidity are recommended. Obviously,extruded feed products start to flash offand dry, immediately when exiting theextruder. Hence, focus needs to be put onthe design and operation of the differenttransport mechanisms, immediatelyupstream the dryer.Validated model simulations visualize how

many existing airlifts and conveyor beltscould damage the pellets when transportedto the dryer. Different process designoptions for new as well as existingproduction lines, will be presented by

Anders Fjeldbo Haubjerg, PhD., andcompared in terms of energy efficiency,capital and operational expenditure, impacton mechanical durability, flexibility andhygienic design. The airlift using heated airis superior for durability of the product forexisting production lines. Energy efficiencycan optionally be optimized by invokingrecirculation of the transport air. For newproduction facilities, process designsfacilitating stacked dryer and extruderlayout are superior.

MycotoxinsNo conference in Asia Pacific would becomplete without addressing the threat ofmycotoxins. There is an increasing trendtowards plant ingredients in aquaculturefeeds, and a commensurate rise in the riskof mycotoxin contamination. These toxinsare produced as secondary metabolites byfungi and can have serious detrimentaleffects on fish and shrimp, ranging frommortalities in severe cases, to economicimpacts such as reduced growth, reduced

immunity, decreased feed efficiency. Theycan be caused by a single mycotoxin, or asis more common, by more mycotoxinsworking together synergistically, causingeven more damage. Clinical signs ofmycotoxicosis can easily be overlooked ormisinterpreted, often leading to a wrongapproach in dealing with the negativeeffects, Maarten Jay van Schoonhoven willsay. Knowledge and awareness of the roleof mycotoxins in aquaculture feedproduction is necessary, just as adequatestrategies with a wide spectrum arenecessary to deal with mycotoxin riskmanagement.

Replacing fishmealNew technologies are emerging to take onthe growing opportunity to replace fishmealin whole or in part. David Tze will argue thatgiven the relative simplicity and efficiencyof microbes, compared to reduction fisheryspecies, plants, or insects, it makes senseto consider the merits of various microbialsingle cell protein technologies. Thesenewer technologies include fermentation ofbacteria, microalgae, yeast, and otherfungi. The substrates may be purchased orreceived as waste streams. Those inputsmight be solid, liquid, or even gas. Butthere are questions: What challenges willthese new technologies face as they breakfrom the lab and race to scale up tocommercialization? What advantages doeseach have? Can any be economicallyproduced? If so, what global scale are theylikely to achieve? What might be the effecton the feed industry and players within it?Insects are a natural source of nutrients

for many fish species and can be producedsustainably. The EU has approved the useof processed insect proteins in aquaculturesince 1 July 2017 as it is convinced thisnew feed ingredient can be produced in asafe manner and offer the quality neededfor robust performance and health of thefish. Tarique Arsiwalla will focus on the useof insect proteins in diets for shrimp,Atlantic salmon and trout. Trial results willbe shown as well as first commercial use ofthe products in Europe. The opportunitiesfor the Asian market include the use of notonly insect proteins, but also insect lipids indiets for young animals and challengedspecies. The potential for antibioticsreduction will also be touched upon.

Functional feedThe optimal nutrient profile of a shrimp feeddepends on many factors, including theculture density, environmental conditions(temperature, salinity, oxygen, etc.),productivity of the pond water, the stabilityof the feed, feeding method, frequency, etc.These factors often differ depending on theseason, region, farm or even pond, whichmakes the selection of the ideal feed rather

a complex and often unstable decision forthe farmer. As a result, research inoptimizing feed formulations under practicalconditions continues to be a majorobjective for feed producers. Also, we canexpect a wide variety in nutritionalspecifications among commercial shrimpfeeds as composition may depend on thetarget market.Increasing cost and fluctuating availability

of raw materials in combination with anincreasingly competitive market isdemanding a creative mind from the shrimpfeed formulator. The nutritional strategy iskey to maintaining or gaining market share.Aside from that, diseases like white spot,vibriosis and white gut/faeces are anemerging risk during the production cycleof shrimp in India and require goodnutritional support to the animal. Alexandervan Halteren will present a study thatinvestigated the different nutritionalstrategies in commercial shrimp feeds inIndia during 2016, when the number ofshrimp feed suppliers increased sharply.Feed samples of 8 major brands werecollected in the market and analyzed forproximate composition as well as anumber of essential nutrients (amino acids,phospholipids, cholesterol, n-3 highlyunsaturated fatty acids). Some of thenutrient levels detected during the survey,revealed the potential for functional feedadditives to optimize nutrient utilization inshrimp feeds in India.Beneficial bacteria, probiotics, are

becoming increasingly popular inaquaculture. Amongst other benefits,probiotics can boost immunity, improvedisease resistance, reduce feed conversionratio, improve growth performance andsurvival and improve water quality. Thebenefit obtained is largely dependent onthe probiotic formulation. Different probioticstrains have different modes of action; thus,they can bring different benefits to the host.For example, Bacillus spp. are capable ofproducing enzymes contributing toimproved digestibility and feed conversion,whereas lactic acid bacteria (LAB) havefunctions in intestinal colonization andimmunity. However, since probiotics are`live' microbial components, they aresensitive to heat and pressure, whichmakes their inclusion in aqua feeds difficult,regardless of whether pelleting or extrusiontechnologies are used. Generally, postpelleting application (PPA) is necessary.Benedict Standen, PhD, will tell delegateshow, using PPA, a novel application for

probiotic usage in fish and shrimp feedshas been developed that guarantees highprobiotic viability without compromising theshelf life of the compound feed. Thispresentation will discuss the benefits of infeed probiotics and summarize results fromrecent trials, including probiotic applicationat the feed mill. Applying innovative solutions such as

immunomodulation through nutrition andthe use of bioactive peptides as afunctional, high-quality source ofhydrolyzed protein can contribute toachieving health benefits in marine species.The beneficial effects of dietary nucleotidesof yeast origin and bioactive peptides fromintestinal mucosa have already beendemonstrated in several studies in shrimp,salmon, tilapia, meager and sea breamamong other species. Nonetheless, furtherresearch studies are still warranted.Francisco González will discuss scientificstudies currently focused in evaluating theeffects of bioactive peptides on growth,nutrient utilization, digestibility, intestinalhealth and meat quality of rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed with high levelsof vegetable protein, and the effects ofdietary nucleotides in white shrimp(Litopenaeus vannamei) affected by AcuteHepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease(AHPND). Besides that, new productdevelopments are also undergoing andshould soon lead to specific formulationsfor other marine species of highcommercial value, such as sea cucumber.In recent years, there has been increasing

attention to natural immunostimulants ororganic acids or other bio-activecompounds for antibiotic free production.Immunostimulants are naturally occurringcompounds that modulate the immunesystem by increasing the host's resistanceagainst diseases caused by pathogensunder duress. Several products such asbeta-glucans, chitins, mannoproteins,peptidoglycans, alginates, bacterialcompounds (lipo-polysaccarides - LPS)and some phytogenic compounds arebeing used as immunostimulants. KabirChowdhury, PhD will cover mainly thestress related factors in major farmedspecies and some relevant immuno-stimulatory solutions available today to theindustry.

The 9th edition of the FIAAP AnimalNutrition Conference aims to address themost pressing issues facing today’snutritionists and animal feed producers.The one-day event, held on March 27 inBangkok, Thailand, will circle aroundseveral key topics: monogastric gut health,antibiotic elimination strategies, animal feedadditives and alternative ingredients.

Antibiotic elimination strategiesThroughout Asia, as in other parts of theworld, livestock producers are looking tolimit, reduce or eliminate antibiotics usedfor growth promotion. While farmmanagement is a key element, nutritionand feed additives play in important role inmaintaining animal health and performance.During FIAAP’s antibiotic replacementstrategy track, three presentations tacklethis topic from different angles. As formulations change, feed producers

are faced with the challenge of navigating

feed processing with new feed additiveproducts. “Reducing Antibiotics inLivestock Feed Through Feed Processing”will identify how proper manufacturingpractices can deliver pathogen-free feedthat is fortified with probiotics, prebioticsand other nutritional additives to promotegut health. Wenger Manufacturing UP/Ctechnology manager Spencer Lawson willfocus on the essential feed-processingsteps for maximizing antibiotic-free feeds,animal health, pellet quality, feedconversion and palatability.Eubiotic Nutrition combines modern

nutritional principles with the use of non-antibiotic feed additives to create a statusof Eubiosis, a well-balanced microflora inthe gastrointestinal tract. Consultant andnutritionist André Meeusen’s presentation,“Eubiotic Nutrition in Antibiotic-free AnimalProduction,” explains the three keyprinciples of the Eubiotic Nutrition concept.Meeusen will discuss how nutritionists canmaximize nutrient utilization with multipleenzymes; improve fat digestion and nutrientabsorption with lysolecithins; and how toobtain a healthy intestinal microflora usingalpha-monoglycerides.While there is already significant scientific

data on the efficacy of bacteriophagetherapy as a treatment of drug resistantbacterial infections, the use ofbacteriophages to prevent illness in foodanimals requires more research to furtherreduce antibiotic usage on farms. ProteonPharmaceuticals production directorArkadiusz Wojtasik’s presentation,“Bacteriophage: Antibiotic-free SolutionAgainst Salmonella in Poultry,” will outlinethe practical challenges and issues raisedby the development and testing of abacteriophage-based solution to preventand/or treat salmonellosis in poultry. He will

discuss development of a bacteriophage-based technology platform, which could beused to selectively eliminate mostdangerous pathogenic bacterial strains inpoultry, aquaculture and dairy, using amixture of carefully selected andgenotypically characterized phages thatinhibit the growth of targeted bacterialserovars.

Monogastric gut health examinedThree sessions will address the applicationof feed additive solutions for improved guthealth and intestinal development. With the never-ending genetic quest for a

bird that grows at the lowest possible feedconversion ratio, hyperphagic birds mustalways be able to digest and absorb highfeed intake. Taking into account the diversechallenges that are common under fieldconditions, almost all birds raised will atsome point encounter a moment that thephysiologic capacities are surpassed bytheir hyperphagic nature, which causesmicrobiota disruptions and enteritis. In thepast, the industry has focused on copingwith these changes by using antimicrobialgrowth promoters (AGPs) and/ortherapeutic antimicrobials to literally “closethe gap,” but today there is a hugepressure, at least in some areas, to limit orban those AGP and/or antimicrobials.Vetworks founder and poultry consultant Dr.Maarten De Gussem will explore what isneeded to achieve high performance inpoultry production during his talk, “PoultryGut Health in 2018: A Holistic View.”While it has become clear that several

classes of feed additives have the potentialto exert beneficial effects in terms of guthealth and animal performance, manyquestions regarding their optimal useremain unexplored. Nutriad’s business

compounds, or phytogentics, such asherbs and spices, essential oils,polyphenols, saponins and tannins, canprovide a first line of defense againstdisease in an animal’s gastrointestinal tract.Phytogenics have been shown to reducethe pathogenicity of the intestinalmicrobiota; stimulate intestinal integrity andimmunity; and limit oxidation andinflammation in the intestinal epithelial cells– therefore, they resemble the effects ofantibiotic growth promoters (AGPS).Delacon’s director of products andinnovation Dr. Jan Dirk van der Klis’spresentation, “How Phytogenics SupportResilience Against Intestinal Infections,” willexamine phytogenic feed additives, theirphysiological functions and the modes ofaction that enables nutritionists to maximizetheir synergies to improve resilience againstintestinal disorders, e.g. necrotic enteritis,dysbacteriosis and coccidiosis.

Ingredient solutionsBeyond additives, nutritionists are alwayslooking for new research and formulationinsights regarding the use of alternativeproteins and feed ingredients.As global fish stocks decrease, fishmeal

will become difficult to source and costprohibitive. As a result, the animal feedindustry needs to find a fishmeal alternative

– excluding soybean meal because of theallergic reaction it causes in piglets. Thesession, “The Use of Pea Protein as aFunctional Ingredient in Southeast AsianPiglet Feed,” will explore a recent 35-daynursery trial at the Bangkok AnimalResearch Center Co. Ltd. (BARC) to testfishmeal alternatives using diet formulationsand ingredients typically used in SoutheastAsia. Dr. Bob Thaler, a swine professor atSouth Dakota State University, will highlighthow pea protein in nursery diets allowed forthe successful decrease of fishmealinclusions.In 2017, U.S. dried distillers grains with

solubles (DDGS) imports to Southeast Asiagrew by nearly 20 percent. As U.S. ethanolproducers continue to develop newtechnologies or improve on currentpractices to increase ethanol yields,changes to ethanol production can havesignificant effects on the nutritional value ofthe DDGS. Accurately describing thesecharacteristics and identifying how differentethanol production practices affect distillersnutrition can help nutritionists moreaccurately formulate diets when usingDDGS. Distillers grains represents a cost-competitive, consistent, and nutrient-densefeedstuff which can be fed to all species oflivestock. POET Nutrition’s director oftechnical service Dr. Kevin Herrick’s willexplore, “Opportunities for DDGS inSoutheast Asian Livestock Diets,” in hispresentation. He will provide an overview of

All award recipients will be published in anedition of Milling and Grain magazinealongside a review of the event itself. of food milling. A panel of independentindustry experts will judge the entries. Theirselection will account for 60 percent of thefinal vote.
