IssueThe Office of Management and Budget (OMB) wanted a system that was consistent among all federal wildlandfire fighting agencies, so that it could produce more comprehensive budgets for fire management.
Business impactImproved understanding of the costs and benefits of fire preparedness alternatives will result in increased national effectiveness.
Capabilities appliedIBM combined Research's experience in scenario-based modelling with the GBS consultants' experience in enterprise architecture and application development. Working together, they are developing a system that will work not only for preparedness, but will also serve as a foundation for future fire management budgeting initiatives.

STEM: A Framework and Tool for Visualization, Modeling, and Forecast of Emerging Infectious Diseases
IBM technology and expertise offers new hope in the battle against the spread of pandemic viruses, such as Avian Flu.
A collaborative effort called Project Checkmate brings together IBM and The Scripps Research Institute - a leading research institute in life sciences - to conduct advanced research on pandemic viruses. The objective? To anticipate, manage and contain infectious diseases.
