CREDIT MODEL VALIDATION UNIT

GROUP FINANCE

DESCRIPTIONThe Credit Model Validation Unit (CMVU) validates all Basel and IFRS 9 retail credit risk models. These are models from the following business units: Card, Personal Loans, Home Loans, Private Wealth, Current Accounts, Rest of Africa, Motor Financing Corporation (MFC), Retail and Relationship Banking.

LEARNING EXPERIENCEComing from having studied mathematical sciences, with no finance background, I have learned a lot in the 14 months I have been at Nedbank. For example I have been in CMVU for only one month, but I have already completed a retail behavioural scorecard PD validation, which is going to be submitted to the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).

WORKING ENVIRONMENTAll the teams I have rotated in have flexible working hours and the people have been very friendly, understanding and always willing to help.

The work in CMVU can be a lot at times, especially when there are many SARB submissions required, but in return you can get good exposure to different models.

PROVISIONING

RETAIL CREDIT LAB

06NEDBANK QUANTS GRADUATE PROGRAMME

DESCRIPTIONThe Retail Credit Lab is a central lab for all the retail banking business units. This is where standardised models are built as a second level of defence across the various business units. Impairment and capital calculations are also performed in this division.

LEARNING EXPERIENCEMy project in this team has been to build one, standardised probability of default model that can be used across the various business units. I have had to become comfortable with new coding languages and learn quickly how the various divisions in Retail function. I have had exposure to the new IFRS 9 methodology, Basel and various credit risk models.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTThe working environment in the Retail Credit Lab is very supportive, and calm. The team understands that as a grad you are coming in with minimal experience and knowledge of the business unit, so they really take time out to ensure you understand what is going on and feel comfortable with the tasks you have been assigned. I feel very welcomed by the team, and there is a great atmosphere. The Retail Credit Lab is not shy to organise fun, external activities and team builds.

MARKET RISK MODEL VALIDATION

GROUP FINANCE

07

DESCRIPTIONAs a quantitative analyst in the Group Market Risk Model (GMRM) Validation Unit, I was responsible for examining the market risk model’s code and mathematical formulas for potential flaws in logic or coding. The validation process encompasses assessment of the statistical, financial and/or economic theory underpinning a model. The assessment is done through developing independent models and back-testing both inhouse developed models and vendor-supplied models.

LEARNING EXPERIENCEI learnt a lot about the process of validating and developing models to account for the various underlying market risk factors by validating Nedbank Corporate and Investment Bank (NCIB), X-value adjustments (XVA) and potential future exposure (PFE) models.

I learnt how these models regulate the amount of risk that is present in the trading space and how to model stochastic processes to quantify risk that is present in financial instruments.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTThe GMRM unit has a supportive culture. The team encourages you to ask questions and will help expand your knowledge in the market risk space. A trainee is always given responsibilities and tasks to complete to maximise their learning experience. I would highly recommend this rotation to any future quant trainee as it is very rewarding.

CARD ANALYTICS

RETAIL BANKING

08NEDBANK QUANTS GRADUATE PROGRAMME

DESCRIPTIONI am currently in the Consumer Card Analytics team in Card Issuing and Payments. I am responsible for executing campaigns to drive client behaviour and analysing campaign results to determine the efficacy of the campaign. I also do behavioural model analysis of trends such as those clients whose accounts are likely to go dormant and be closed.

LEARNING EXPERIENCEIn this rotation you will learn a lot of data analytics techniques. You will learn to write code in SQL and Python, and data visualisation techniques such as Power BI.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTThe Card Analytics team is relatively small but very welcoming and supportive. They are always willing to help and it is a great space in which to learn and work.

FINANCIAL LAB

BUSINESS BANKING

09

DESCRIPTIONI am currently working in the Business Banking: Financial Lab team. The clients we deal are usually large corporates. My main project is to validate and refine a credit model that the team uses to score its clients. There have been several ad hoc projects that I have been involved in, which largely dealt with Excel and VBA.

LEARNING EXPERIENCEI was exposed to several risk modules at varsity and seeing how those principles get applied in practice is really stimulating. This rotation develops my credit model building skills and makes me more comfortable with several programming languages. Having no prior experience with VBA and SAS, I have been given the platform to learn and ask questions. I also have exposure to important regulations such as Basel and IFRS 9.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTThe team is relatively small compared with those in other rotations, which has helped me to build relationships with managers. There are plenty of learning opportunities and I never hesitate to ask questions as everyone is always willing to help. I am not treated as just a trainee.

MODELS

CORPORATE AND INVESTMENT BANKING

10NEDBANK QUANTS GRADUATE PROGRAMME

DESCRIPTIONThe Data, Models and Innovation team sits in Corporate and Investment Banking(CIB) Risk. The main objective of the team is analysing risk (mainly credit risk models) and providing risk data and proper pricing to business, so they can make well-informed decisions.

LEARNING EXPERIENCEThe exposure I am getting is very stimulating. We use SAS and Excel for model validation and development. I get to see how different deals in CIB are rated and all the qualitative and quantitative data that is considered when rating or pricing a deal.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTThe team promotes a friendly environment to help young graduates feel free to ask questions, and no one is ever too busy to answer my questions. Every birthday is celebrated to make everyone feel appreciated (I’ve been eating cupcakes ever since I got here).

STRESS TESTING

BALANCE SHEET MANAGEMENT

11

DESCRIPTIONIn my team we use macroeconomic variables to predict deposit balance and margin growth in different stress scenarios by building linear regression time series models.

LEARNING EXPERIENCEThe work is quite technical. I build new models using R, SAS and Matlab. There is some documentation involved and I have done a few presentations.

I work with large data sets, have improved my analytical skills and learned a lot about the bank and the economy as a whole.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTThis is an amazing team with a great culture. We go for team runs and team outings often. It is hard work, but the hours are fine and quite flexible. The managers are very friendly and supportive.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is at the heart of the Nedbank Quants Graduate Programme. Our trainees have a strong sense of giving back to communities and pushing beyond boundaries to help others. The Nedbank quant trainees have displayed this entrenched value through the trainee-led CSR projects that have taken place.

A TOTAL OF R126 000 WAS

RAISED FOR THE RENOVATIONS

TO BE DONE AT EPWORTH

CHILDREN’S VILLAGE.

The project focused on providing a more conducive environment for learning for the children. In just three days an old storage room was transformed into a learning centre, a dilapidated basketball court was completely renovated, and new jungle gyms were put up in the various play areas.

Being a young professional is a big advantage. How has this helped youset up your future? The opportunity to be a young professional has resulted in a great advancement in both my professional and personal development, as the assistance received from the banking environment as a whole guided and directed me in making decisions that aided and facilitated my growth. This has assisted me in making relevant, positive and effective life choices and decisions about my future.

Why did you choose banking? Having a career in the bank allows me to learn many new things, as the jobs and career paths in the sector are diverse, which offers never-ending opportunities to develop and grow within the environment.

How did induction assist you with the transition from varsity to the working world? The month’s induction provided us with invaluable workshops and talks that helped us evolve from students into professionals. Workshops focusing on report writing, negotiation and presentation skills and making a professional impression gave us the tools required to enter the working world. They also helped strengthen our confidence at the beginning of our careers.

Describe how trainees are involved in the running of the programme? Trainees are involved in the running of the programme through the various trainee-led committees. The social committee plans and executes the programme’s social events, the marketing committee plans and executes how the programme markets itself to attract future grads, and the recruitment committee helps management in appointing trainees for the following year. The running of the programme is therefore steered by the trainees in many aspects.

Why do you value yourexperience at Nedbank? The Nedbank Quants Graduate Programme lays the foundation to gain knowledge from experts in the banking industry. Nedbank is a reputable bank and you pride yourself on working for such a prestigious institution. The management team is exceptional, and you can be sure that they have the best interests of the bank’s employees, clients and stakeholders at heart.

Do you have any interview advice for applicants of the programme? The most important thing is to be yourself. Nedbank looks to hire individuals who are authentic, so try not to put on a show and display a false character. Preparation goes a long way. The more time you take in advance to get ready, the more comfortable you’ll feel during the actual interview.

What has been the highlight of your entire first-year experience?I am very much a people’s person and the fact that I am in a graduate programme and not yet a permanent employee is a big highlight to me. I am not one for routine, so being able to rotate and constantly learn new things is a big attraction to me. I love the idea of the CA and quant graduates being put together, as not only have I formed new relationships, but I have been exposed to how everyone in the bank plays an important role.

Why did you choose Nedbank? In first-year varsity I was an Economics top achiever and we got the opportunity to visit Nedbank to learn how we would fit in and what opportunities were available. From that day I was mesmerised and knew that Nedbank was the place for me. In my final year at varsity a lecturer of mine mentioned that Nedbank was looking for mathematicians – so my dream organisation was looking for people with my qualifications.

Mbali TyoloUniversity of Stellenbosch

How has the programme assisted you as a new employeein the banking world? The programme has given me a good outline of how a bank operates and what it means to be in banking. I learn a lot of interesting aspects of the business and how it fits in with the rest of the society. The induction created a foundation of learning about various things such as personal branding and negotiation and presentation skills. The programme constantly keeps me updated with the information that I need to solidify my foundation as a banker through training and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Any words of wisdom for future trainees? Perception is reality. Do not look at things in isolation. Keep on learning with the understanding that how you view things creates a reality for your journey. The journey of learning is endless. Have enthusiasm and be willing to learn. Most importantly, believe in your potential.

What is your most valuable piece of advice for a new trainee?Being chosen to be part of the programme means that you are smart, that your values align with those of the bank and that the bank believes you will add much value, just as the Nedbank community will add value to your career. Resources are available to help tailor your dream career, so do not hesitate to ask questions, seek guidance and enjoy every moment with the amazing people around you. Work can be hectic, but never forget to live. Social events are also perfect opportunities to network.

How do you manage work-life balance? A work-life balance comes naturally once you can manage your time. I believe that a happy life impacts positively on my work, so I make it a point to visit friends and family, have a positive outlook, do the things I like, listen to music and in return I am more positive about work. But above all, it’s important to check constantly whether you’re being productive both in your work and personal life.

How did becoming a banker assist you with an understanding of your personal finances?Becoming a banker in this specific programme put me in a position where assistance and knowledge about financial management is easily accessible from management, other trainees and financial advisors.

What made you decide on Nedbank as your employer of choice? The values of the bank really resonated with me, but most importantly these values are visible through the people you meet on the programme, from recruitment all the way to becoming an official trainee.

How would you describe the culture at Nedbank?Everyone is friendly and helpful and there’s a sense of family around the office. There is plenty of knowledge to go around and something to learn from everyone you meet. All around you are people who realise that we need to work together to achieve our goals and rely on each other’s strengths. Even the busiest and most senior members of the bank are humble and willing to assist you. There is also a great emphasis on personal and professional development.

How do you manage work-life balance? Our graduate programme is unique in the sense that the CA and quants programmes are combined into one. This gives us an opportunity to meet and interact with new and exciting people that we would otherwise not have been able to. After a month-long induction, you get close to the other trainees and often meet up for lunch and drinks. It is easy to find cycling or running groups that you can join or attend social events planned throughout the year.

How has your experience as partof the (Specialist Training Programme) STP family been?Being part of the programme has been an amazing introduction to the working world. Trainees become a close group, helping and supporting each other through anything. Older trainees are always there to offer you guidance and support, as they have been through it all. Fun activities are constantly being organised to help develop relationships outside of work, from APC and ITC lunches to team builds.

What has been your greatest highlight? Weekend Away, a weekend of games, laughter and team spirit. It’s held over the first weekend of the programme, so you get to bond with fellow trainees early on. You get to spend time with the older trainees, who prepare you for what is lying ahead but also show you how to have fun. As first-years, you have to let your hair down and get initiated, but everyone ends up laughing with you and not at you. It’s definitely a weekend you will remember, and one you should look forward to.

How are the trainees involvedin the running of the programme? The trainees are very involved in how the programme is run. We are required to assist in the recruitment process and in marketing the programme. We help organise the events that the programme hosts and have a strong presence at the various universities to help recruit the high-calibre candidates for the programme. Trainees are also fellow mentors and programme buddies to the newbies, to assist them with their individual and programme growth.

How would you describethe Nedbank culture? The Nedbank culture is very friendly and encourages growth. Every day you see this testament in the engagement between management and staff, including trainees. We strive to be a bank that invests in our surrounding communities and use our financial expertise to do good. I have met quite a few people who have not only helped me grow professionally but personally as well.

How do you manage work-life balance?I work hard during the week, but don’t open my laptop over the weekends. I plan my weekends ahead so that I always have something to look forward to.

What is one thing about Nedbank that has exceeded your expectations? The culture of being more than just colleagues and supporting each other.

Why would you recommend Nedbank? The beauty of the Nedbank two-year quants programme is that you can spend six months in a rotation of your choice. Other companies offer three-month rotations and this might not be enough to learn what is happening in that team. The Nedbank rotations are flexible, meaning you can choose to extend or end your rotation, as well as move from credit to market risk, or from credit risk modelling to value analytics to fraud detection. In the Nedbank Quants Graduate Programme you are the driver of your own career.

What has been your highlight in the programme so far? In the rotations I have been in, they don’t give you irrelevant work. I have been tasked with actual work, some of which was required by The South African Reserve Bank. I also had to present before business experts on actual work that they would use for business decisionmaking. At times I have had to defend a model I had just learned to other, experienced quants.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your first-year self?Don’t be afraid to ask questions. As a grad, it can be daunting to ask seniors questions about work, but they are always willing to take time and answer the questions that you have.

What has the support system at Nedbank been like during your rotations? The support system has been great from both the programme and the rotations I was placed in. From day one I felt like I was part of the family in the Nedbank Quants Graduate Programme and it has always been supportive throughout. Additionally, the rotation that I was in was really invested in my growth as a quant and colleagues were always willing to support me whenever I needed help.

30

What has been your greatest highlight so far? Having the work that I’ve done being mentioned in a divisional strategy session and delivering the first Power BI report for the team was a really proud moment.

Where to from here? I still have rotations I’d like to do to advance and gain more quantitative skills, but I can rest assured that it’s only upwards and onwards from here; the programme has really given me wings to soar.

Empoweringwomen in

31

LEADING LADIES

Over the years we have seen a significant increase in the number of females who would like to venture into the mathematics and finance fields. To stimulate this interest further we have created an initiative called Leading Ladies, which is designed to empower young women to do more and be more. The initiative aims to provide aspirant female quants and CAs with a platform to discuss and learn what it takes to be a successful and well-rounded individual by creating an intimate space in which they can share their views, ranging from the role that females play in the corporate world to millennial-relevant topics such as work-life balance. This event is organised annually and hosted by a trainee and her team, who have full discretion about the content and management of the event.

Therefore, this is not only an opportunity to develop young females looking to come into the bank – it is also a chance to develop professional skills such as time management and communication in our female trainees, taking them a step closer to becoming global business leaders. The programme advocates for making informed career decisions, but we want young females to find the courage to step up to the table and become the change drivers we need to see in this country.

In the wise words of Rihanna: ‘There’s something so special about a woman who dominates in a man’s world. It takes a certain grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness and the nerve to never take no for an answer.’

So, why not be that game changer?

MENTORAPPRECIATION

The Mentor Appreciation awardThis is awarded to the mentor who has shown to provide outstanding exposure for and development of their trainees in their rotation. The award recognises the time and effort put into training, upskilling and developing trainees and provides an opportunity for the trainees to thank this mentor for the extra mile that they go.

In 2018 the award was presented to Nicholas Sim.

About the mentor, from the mentorLife at Nedbank started in 2015. In that time I have had the opportunity of working with many of the bank’s systems particular to Unsecured Lending, as well as a number of great people here. I have been involved with numerous system updates, helped deploy and manage parts of the Managed Evolution process (within CR1) and have been actively involved with trying to detect and prevent fraud in our business unit.

Mentoring in the programme Having come from an engineering background, I have been forced to develop a broad skill set, which include data collection, programming, modelling and other softer skills required by our business. Although constant sharpening of technical skills are required for the role, my focus has shifted to include aspects such as mentoring and leadership, which is what drove me to help out on the programme. During my time with the programme, I have managed two of the graduates, both of whom have gone on to excel in several other departments. Despite my best attempts to get the most out of them, both ladies rose to the challenge and recommended me for the Mentor Appreciation award in 2018. Since this award is given to those mentors who both develop and inspire, it was clear that my management style was appreciated. So, after the pleasant surprise of both the award and the challenge of developing others, I continue to mentor and train others to be better versions of themselves.
