Harris Funeral Home is directing Please visit www.harrisfune ralhomeinc.com to view and sign registry MARY EMILY (WHITESIDE) LANE Mary Emily (Whiteside) Lane died at Magnolia Trace Nursing Home in Huntsville, Alabama, on July 14, 2014. Mary Emily, as she was known to her family and friends, was born in Anniston, Alabama, to Josiah Phillip (Phil) and Alberta Norwood Whiteside on March 4, 1924. She married William E. Lane, also of Anniston, in December 1942. They moved to Auburn after World War II to attend school on the G.I. Bill and returned permanently in 1953 when Dr. Lane took a position in the School of Engineering. After Dr. Lane’s early death in 1961, she returned to school and obtained her B.S. and M.S. in speech pathology. She was a speech therapist for the Auburn City Schools from 1966 to 1982 while raising her two sons Mark Norwood Lane, who lives in Argentan, France, and Keith Whiteside Lane, who lives in Huntsville, Alabama. After Mary Emily retired, she continued to live in Auburn for many years where she became a recognized potter, painter, and a passionate gardener. She especially enjoyed creating cut flower arrangements from flowers in her yard including brightly colored zinnias and hydrangeas. Mary Emily read widely and had many interests and friends of all ages. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Auburn and the Studio 218 women’s art group. She stayed in Auburn until health necessitated her move to Huntsville in 2011 to be near her son Keith and his wife Ann. She was very proud of raising her sons on her own. She is survived by those two sons, their wives and one granddaughter, Martha Jordan Lane. Mary Emily’s brother Whit Whiteside and one sister, Hope Whiteside Kerr, predeceased her. She is survived by two sisters Alberta Whiteside Turner of Sylacauga, Alabama, and Lucy Whiteside Hanks of Austin, Texas. She was a member of Waverly Baptist Church and lifelong resident of Waverly. Mrs. McDonald retired from Tab Sewing Room as a sewing machine operator. She enjoyed fishing and was an excellent cook. Mrs. McDonald loved her family very much and was always doing for her grand- kids who she loved dearly. She is survived by her sons, Jimmy McDonald (Joyce) of Smiths Station and Tamp McDonald of Beulah; nine grand- children; twenty-five great- grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Lurlene Mann of Cusseta and Nancy Patterson of Dadeville; son-in-law, Wayne Clark of Opelika; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Moses Henry McDonald; her parents; daughter, Mary Clark; son, Lewis McDonald; sister, Maggie Carter; and brothers, John Chappell, Ed Chappell, Charles Chappell, and Roosevelt Chappell. Mrs. Torbert passed Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Dadeville Health Care Center. She was a member of White Street Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Missionary Society, director of the J.G. Chatman’s Children Choir, advisor of the Sunbeams and Red Circle and organized the Mass Junior Missionary Society, bringing together members in the Auburn, Loachapoka and Opelika areas. Mrs. Torbert graduated from Opelika State Vocational Technical School of Practical Nursing and was licensed by the State of Alabama in 1969. Preceding her in death were: her husband, Cary Torbert, Sr., a son, Melvin Torbert, Sr. and a grand- daughter, Charity Porter. Lane died at MagnoliaTrace Nursing Home inHuntsville, Alabama, onJuly 14, 2014. Mary Emily,as she was known to herfamily and friends, wasborn in Anniston, Alabama,to Josiah Phillip (Phil)and Alberta NorwoodWhiteside on March 4,1924. She married WilliamE. Lane, also of Anniston,in December 1942. Theymoved to Auburn afterWorld War II to attendschool on the G.I. Bill andreturned permanently in1953 when Dr. Lane took aposition in the School ofEngineering.

After Dr. Lane’s earlydeath in 1961, she returnedto school and obtained herB.S. and M.S. in speechpathology. She was aspeech therapist for theAuburn City Schools from1966 to 1982 while raisingher two sons MarkNorwood Lane, who livesin Argentan, France, andKeith Whiteside Lane, wholives in Huntsville,Alabama. After Mary Emilyretired, she continued tolive in Auburn for manyyears where she became arecognized potter, painter,and a passionate gardener.She especially enjoyedcreating cut flowerarrangements from flowersin her yard includingbrightly colored zinniasand hydrangeas. MaryEmily read widely and hadmany interests and friendsof all ages. She was amember of the FirstPresbyterian Church ofAuburn and the Studio 218women’s art group. Shestayed in Auburn untilhealth necessitated hermove to Huntsville in 2011to be near her son Keithand his wife Ann. She wasvery proud of raising hersons on her own.

She is survived by thosetwo sons, their wivesand one granddaughter,Martha Jordan Lane. MaryEmily’s brother WhitWhiteside and one sister,Hope Whiteside Kerr,predeceased her. She issurvived by two sistersAlberta Whiteside Turnerof Sylacauga, Alabama, andLucy Whiteside Hanks ofAustin, Texas.
