ALAS, not new to pressure-filled situations, stresses a point during ahuddle. AUGUST DELA CRUZ

LETRAN MENTOR ALAS PULLS AN ACE

My family, my lifeBy Ruth L. NavarraU

LTIMATELY, coach Louie Alas chose familyover basketball when he decided to step downas head coach of the Letran Knights.

The Knights were beaten bythe San Beda Red Lions, 67-39,in Game 3 of the NCAA finals. The experience and the intensi-ty of the Lions threw the

Knights off guard. But Alas hadother reason for his resignation.

Ive been here for 12 years.Matagal ko ng iniisip, kungnanalo sana fitting farewellpero thats life, he said in ahoarse voice. Nagsusumbongsila (his sons) sa mom nila na

wala na silang ginagawangtama. Dun talaga ako na-touch.

Two of his players in theteam are his sons, Kristoffer and

Kevin. Because he didnt wantanybody accusing him of prefer-

ential treatment, Alas admittedthat he was extra hard onKristoffer and Kevin.

Under Alas, the Knightstrained as if there was no to-

morrow. But at the end of theday, Alas would take the burdenof a loss not his players.

It was a good day for them(San Beda) and a bad one forus. Sabi ko naman sa kanila,

wala namang pwedeng sisihinsa inyo diyan. Kung meronmang may nagkamali dito, ako

yun. So you dont have to bowyour heads down. Just moveon, Alas said.

    The journey to the champi-

onship had not been easy. Theirstory could have been a Cin-

derella story. They were able toget past the San Sebastian Stagsin the Final Four twice, earningthem a spot in the finals. They

were able to defeat San Bedaon Game 2 when everybodyelse expected a sweep.

Ang tama naming ginawathis season is sobra kamingnagsacrifice. We always went tochurch every day. This game,

yung inexperience took its t ollon us sa finals, said Alas.

Letran didnt forget its spiri-tual side after getting batteredby the Lions. The Knights wentout of the locker room withrosaries around their necks.

Alas wo re two.Alas noted that the game

overflowed with emotion espe-cially for graduating playersJam Cortes and Carlo Lituania.

The bad thing was that we

lost and the good thing wasthat they learned a lot from it.

Hindi lang sa basketball maga-gamit ito kundi sa daily life ni-la, he said. I told the rest ofthe boys na may mga games panaman like the ChampionsLeague. Sabi ko sa kanila, taposna ang NCAA. Now, studyhard.

Hes leaving the team but hemade sure that they will not belost without him. He says he al-ready recruited replacementsfor his graduating players. What

hes really trying to find are bigmen because he knows that the

    team lacks the height advan-tage.

The players will go back totraining next week. He says thatthey will be trained on theirperimeter shooting because thatis what they badly need to im-prove on.

When asked what he woulddo the rest of the day, Alas isquick to answer.

Ill be with my family. Kungpwede din yung buong team ng

Letran tonight, gusto ko dinsilang makasama.

ROM start to finish, San Beda neverdisappointed its Red Army of diehardsupporters.

After winning their first game with six healthymen, the Red Lions entered the Final Four with plentyto spare.

The Mendiola-based warriors downed PerpetualHelp Altas in the semis and got the boost when Letranstunned San Sebastian College in the other half of thedraw. The Stags tamed the Lions twice in the elimina-tions but self-destructed against the Knights in the F4.

Under the masterful guidance of former PBA gun-ner and San Beda Red Cubs star Ronnie Magsanoc, the Lions were clearly ahead of the pack.

They stumbled in Game 2 of the title series, but notto worry. It was just a temporary setback.

Lions pride is simply too much to handle for theKnights. Dennis U. Eroa

    From thevery

    beginning ithas alwaysbeen the

    players, saidMagsanoc.

    Its aspecial

    season forthe players.

    That first win[where San

Baser Amer: Leading the PackBy Patrick Leonard Mayo

IN THE GAME of bas-ketball, there areplayers who really

have a knack for winning. These players not onlyhate losing but, more im-portantly, they know howto win.

And of the many prolificplayers in the NCAA, sopho-more Baser Amer of the reign-ing basketball titlists San BedaRed Lions is a perfect exampleof a winner inside the basket-ball court as he led the Mendio-la-based squad to a three-peat

victory, t hanks to his ch ampi-onship performance that earnedhim finals MVP honors.

Bago mag-Game Three, ini-isip ko kung paano akomakakatulong sa team, so nag-ing aggressive lang ako at fo-cused, said the 20-year-old

point guard who hails from thesouth in Davao. Last game na,do-or-die na, so bawal na tala-gang magkamali.

Baser gave it his all as he ex-ploded for 20 points in GameOne and 14 markers during therubber match that helped theRed Lions build a huge cushionin the first half en route to SanBedas record-setting 17thmens basketball title.

But Amer knows very wellthat being part of a winningsquad and a three-peat team atthat, requires a lot of patienceand a lot of sacrifices.

who was also hailed rookie ofthe year last season.

    The second year Marketing

major is no stranger to successhaving won multiple titles dur-ing his high school years as aRed Cub but winning twostraight in the seniors divisiongave him a different kind of joy.

And with at least two moreplaying years for the big redschool in store for Baser, theMendiola dynasty has a goodchance of extending its reignfurther in the NCAA.

Coach Magsanoc basks in the glory of the momentRONNIE Magsanoc, PBAs pointlaureate turned winning coach, didnt want to look back at thepast.

The rookie head coach of theNCAAs winningest team just

wanted to savor the moment. When reminded by PDI scribe

Jasmine Payo of his own successas a star high school player forthe school under the legendary

    Ato Badolato, Magsanoc an-

swered with a laugh. That was so long ago. At

this stage, you dont think backanymore. You just think of thepresent. Just be grateful for thesituation that you can serve theschool.

To the shock of the Letrangallery, San Beda turned a pre-dicted shootout into a massacre,67-39, before a jampacked crowdat the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Both teams split the first twogames of the best-of-threechampionship and fans and ex-perts alike agreed that the de-cider would be bloody. TheKnights and the Lions went intoGame Three tied with 16 titles.

But San Beda, smooth and un-forgiving, had other things inmind as it took control of thematch right from the opening bellen route to crowning itself the

leagues winningest team. From the very beginning it

has always been the players, said Magsanoc. Its a specialseason for the players. That first

win [wh ere San Beda won withonly six players] was very im-portant. We were also able togo to the Final Four seamlessly.

Magsanoc got the surprise ofhis life when he replacedFrankie Lim at the wake of the

controversial off-season brawlthat led to the suspension of

virtually the entire San Bedasquad on its first game.

There never really was aplan to be the coach of thisteam. Things happened andthey found me to be the head, said Magsanoc, a member ofthe elite 25 all-time best playersof the pro league.

Baste swingman sings Swan songBy Michael Angelo Jugado

IN his very last collegiategame donning the proudcolors of the San SabastianCollege-Recoletos GoldenStags, Ronald Pascual hadthe chance to win the gamefor Baste.

Pascual, never gun-shy totake the big shot when itmattered most, had thechance to will the Stags to areturn trip in the LastDance against their tormen-tors of seasons past theSan Beda College Red Lionsand a shot at redemptionagainst their arch-nemesisthat denied them cage gloryin the NCAA the past two

    years.But the basketball gods

    and goddesses had other

plans in mind.He missed.Crestfallen by the bitter

loss of the twice-to-beatBaste to the upstart LetranKnights, who put an abruptend to his celebrated NCAAcareer, Pascual remains gra-cious even in defeat.

Kahit talo kami sa lastgame ay proud pa rin ako sateam ko at sa sarili ko dahilkahit paano natulungan koang team namin sa loob ng

apat na taon, said the 24-year-old Pascual.

And noth ing is to beashamed of for the long tomartist, whose deadly outsideshooting and boundless ath-leticism catapulted him intohis stature as one of NCAAsbig time gunners.

Pascual, a native of Mexi-co, Pampanga, bid adieu tohis collegiate stint with theRed and Gold of Recto with

his head held high.

The sweet-shooting Pas-cual, a part of the Stags

vaunted troika, known as thePinatubo Trio which in-cludes now PBA super rookie

Calvin The Beast Abuevaand reigning NCAA MVP IanSangalang, is playing for theNLEX Road Warriors in thePBA D-league.

Ang dadalhin ko sa NLEXna natutunan ko while play-ing for Baste is yung lumala-ban hanggang sa huli,

walang gi-give up kahitanong mangyari, said Pas-cual.

    The high-flying Pascual

pulled out from the 2012PBA Draft due to the pletho-ra of Fil-Ams who joined theannual event while also try-ing to get more time to recu-perate from his injury thatslowed him down early inthe season.

    RONNIE MAGSANOC:

Trudging the Road to GloryBy Patrick Leonard Mayo

RIGHT BEFORE THE start of the NCAAs 88thseason, the San Beda Red Lions lair wasfilled with turmoil, confusion and pressure.

Months before the start ofthe season, the teams then-head coach Frankie Lim andsome of the teams playersgot involved in an altercation

with the volleyball headcoach of San Sebastian whicheventually led to Lims resig-nation and suspensions onsome of the players.

Now the chance of de-fending their basketball titleand repeating a three-peat allof a sudden turned dim.

Then came the hiring of ex-pro and former San Beda RedCub Ronnie Magsanoc as thenew coach of the team and

apparently the PBAs PointLaureate had his own way ofdealing with the situation.

I just tried to focus onthe things that I have controlof from the start.

Winning his first NCAA ti-tle as a coach in just his first

year at the helm is somethingthat he attributes to thelessons and philosophies thathe taught and learned fromhis players the whole endeav-or leading to the schools17th mens basketball cham-pionship which made themthe leagues most successfulteam.

Marami akong natutunansa kanila, at marami silangnatutunan sa akin. Faith

without fear was our battlecry and relying on confi-dence, composure andcourage also played a bigpart.

He added: We earnedwisdom th rough the m anyfailures that you encounter, failures that really helped us

reach this far and win.But more than the win-ning the title, the rookiecoach was all about his play-ers and about giving back tohis alma mater.

Thankful ako and I reallyappreciate this opportunity tohelp the players reach theirpotentials and this is our wayof giving back to the school, ended the winning coach.
