The Chinese New Year is the most important holiday of the year in China. Occurring on January 1st of the Old Lunar Calendar, the night before is called New Year’s Eve and all of the family gathers and stays awake to welcome in the New Year.
Constructed in 1620 and known as the Red Temple from its Vermillion Temple Gate, Kofuku-ji is Japan's oldest Chinese Temple. The founder of the Ohbaku Sect of Buddhism, Ingen, was the first to enter into the temple, and other Chinese High Priests, such as Mokusu Nyojo, would eventually become high priests here.
