Anne Hospital was officially made the new landing location for the STARS Air Ambulance. Previously an ambulance crew would have to drive to the municipal yard and pick up the STARS crew, bring them to the hospital, then pa- tients would be loaded into the ambulance at the hospital and driven back to the STARS helicopter. The new landing site behind the hospital will save time and manpower that could potentially save someone’s life. This site is ideal to deliver a faster door-to-door patient care and transport. Ste. Anne is also the first in line of medical services from Ontario along the Trans Canada Highway, meaning any motor vehicle accidents along that stretch of highway will have patients transferred to Ste. Anne. The new landing location is just in time for winter as the STARS Air Ambulance and Snoman (Snowmobilers of Manitoba) Inc. are partnering to promote snowmobile safety this winter as more than 34,500 Manitoba snowmobilers get ready to hit the trails. There were seven fatalities in total last season, including five off-trail, and two on-trail incidents. This new location will aid in getting a patient to help faster this winter. Ste. Although traditions are frequently used to define a family, it is often difficult to determine just whata family tradition is. Traditions are a highly personal behaviour that is often handed down from one generation to thenext and firmly anchored in family life by the force of habit. Although naturally occurring routines and pre-existing activities can make up some of the mostpowerful family traditions, new symbolically charged activities and ideas can energize a family. If your looking to start your own family tradition these ideas can help you and your family. Pick afew you might enjoy...1. Host a monthly family movie or games night, where each family member takes a turn choosingthe night's entertainment.2. Get a yearly family portrait, making sure to incorporate special momentos or significant objectsinto the photo.

3. Explore your family's ethnic background by cooking recipes, reading books, and learning a language from an ancestral homeland.4. Arrange a special dinner together once a week where each family memberrotates being the guest of honour.5. Make a “what we learned today” journal and every member writes whatthey learnt that day. Or start the year with an empty jar and fill it with notesabout good things that happened thoughout the year and on New Years Eveempty it and remember all the fun times you had.6. Plan special birthday activities for each family member, making sure tocelebrate their individual tastes and passions.7. Go on a family walk every morning or evening or a Full Moon Walk a fullmoon occurs roughly every 29 days.8. Host a family reunion.9. Visit relatives regularly.10. Go on a family road trip, excursion, or vacation every year.

11. Honour older relatives while celebrating holi-days by incorporating some of their cherished tradi-tions into your own.12. Choose a day each year to go through familyphoto albums or watch old home videos together.13. Recruit friends and extended family to regularlyvolunteer at a community event.14. Conduct a New Year’s resolution review cer-emony.15. Impart the importance of charity and communityinvolvement by raising money for a cause that isclose to your family's heart every year.16. Schedule a fixed dinner-time every night.17. Honour momentous events such as gradua-tions, getting a driver's licence, or getting marriedby planting a tree.18. Special Saturday/Sunday breakfast with the fam-ily such as “morning pancakes with Dad or Mom.”19. Create a secret handshake or language.20. Read your children a bed time story. Decide as a family what works best for you, andremember to relax and have fun. The best traditionis often just spending time together.

It is no surprise for Manitoba drivers that ice and snow affect the roadways. What may be surprising, however, is how some simple changes in driving habitscan make a big difference to your safety while driving in winter conditions.Habits that drivers have on dry roads could have serious consequences ifpracticaed on icy or snow-covered roadways. RCMP in Manitoba want everyone to reach their destination safely, so hereare a few tips to help you do that:• Posted speed limits are for ideal travel conditions. On winter roads, be

aware there could be ice. Driving at reduced speeds is a great precautionary measure against slippery conditions

• Do not use cruise control• Increase your distance between other vehicles as stopping distance on an

icy road is double the stopping distance on a dry one• Use steady and precise movements when driving in winter conditions.

Jerky movements and steering while breaking or accelerating can causeskidding

• Observe road signs pointing out icy spots, such as bridges and overpasses• If you start to skid, do not brake or accelerate. Look where you want the

vehicle to go and steer in that direction• As always, keep in mind the basic safety rules: buckle up, slow down, drive

with caution, be aware, be alert, be sober, give yourself plenty of time toreach your destination, and keep focused on the road

Have safe and happy travels!
