Tena Koe

Welcome to all new and existing

parents and whanau.

This year we have hit the road

running with our later start. We

hope your daughters have settled

in well.

Last week Academic Tutors spent

a lot of time preparing the girls for

the year.

One of the really important things

we spent time on was going over

the Whanau Hononga book with

the girls. It clearly articulates

expectations and rules whilst

having valuable information for

you as parents, particularly around

how and who to contact at school

if you need help.

We are a community based around

home / school / Student

partnership. It was really

important that we gave you and

the girls a reference book that was

small enough to put on your notice

board etc at home, but also easy

to read.

Probably the best section is the

Frequently Asked Questions

section which covers off some

common issues that we often have

each year. This booklet is well

worth reading and by now your

daughter should have brought it

home for you to read, and sign off

on her Caregiver/Contact

Information Check Sheet. We are

looking forward to working with

you all, to make your daughters

high school year

some of the best

USA BOUND:

Two students from Southland Girls’ High School have been selected for the

trip of a lifetime to the United States.

Sarah Humphries, 17, and Kayla Calder, 16, have been chosen to attend

the 4-H Congress in Bozeman, Montana in July.

They’re among six TeenAg members from across New Zealand picked to

take part in the sought-after exchange.

“I’m really excited and a bit shocked. It’s going to be such an amazing

opportunity,” said Sarah.

Her parents own a 570-hectare farm at Five Rivers, which runs sheep and

grazes dairy heifers.

“The United States has large ranches and feedlots and I can’t wait to learn

more about their style of farming,” she said.

Students will stay with host families and explore Yellowstone National Park

as part of the three-week exchange.

“A highlight will be spending four days attending the 4-H Congress,” said

Bridget Huddleston from NZ Young Farmers, who will chaperone the

students.

“The girls will participate in educational workshops, hear from professional

speakers and mingle with 400 other delegates. It will be an amazing

opportunity.”

SGHS / SBHS SENIOR PRODUCTION

28th – 30th MAY 2019

One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local laws, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher.

The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

Audition Information available 20th February

CHAMBER MUSIC CONTEST Advanced musicians who are keen to be part of an ensemble should look at this opportunity. NCEA students can use this as part of their group performance work. Support to assist in selecting music and preparation will be given by the Itinerant

teachers.

The contest is on 6th June. See Mr. de Blois if this is

of interest to you.

Theatre Sport skills.

Kōrero with Year 7 and 8

Welcome to the start of an exciting year with our Year 7 and 8 team!

It was fantastic to meet so many of you during our Open Home and Year 8 Mini PLCs, taking some of those start of year nerves away and establish positive relationships between home, teachers, and students. It was great to be able to put faces to names and kick start the year of learning.

Roles:

•As Head of Junior School (HOJS) my role has oversight of everything for our Year 7 and 8 students. Whilst primarily I spend my time with curriculum and as a voice for Year 7 and 8 on the Senior Leadership Team, I am also a support person for pastoral issues and anything else that crops up for our Year 7 and 8 students.

Erin Pickering | [email protected]

•Within Year 7 and 8 we have two Year Level Coordinators (YLCs). Our role is to look after the social, emotional, and physical wellbeing of our girls, and support teachers to ensure each girl is happy, settled and learning to the best of her ability. The role in-cludes aspects like running leadership roles, organising assemblies and supporting classes to lead these, sharing their learning and skills. It also encompasses listening to and supporting students and whanau when they face challenges, whether these are social, personal or learning.

Recently we stumbled upon wise words from Maggie Dent via her article “Surviving the First Week of High School”:

“All change triggers our primitive brain and our biological drive to survive. It is stressful for everyone.” Puberty means our students are already in a massive state of change before adding in starting back at school.

What can we do?

•Talk about change - it is ok to feel nervous, anxious and a bit scared. It is ok to be worried about getting lost, making friends and getting to know new teachers.

•Help them to prepare - last minute rushing adds to anxiety. Getting her into a routine where she goes through tomorrow’s timetable and packs her school bag each night before going to bed may help

•Get to know the school / new year with them - get them to share their timetable and school map with you, sit down and talk it through together. Where are the toilets, different classrooms, lunch areas etc. A copy of the timetable might be useful on the fridge too. Get them to explain to you all the different codes on their timetable

•Set up a firm bedtime - having good sleep routines is one of the best ways to stay healthy as an adolescent. Make sure the bedroom is a device free zone

•Set out technology boundaries from weekdays and weekends - device free time is really important for us all, especially teens. Some times that work well for device free time during the week are during meal times and the hour before bed as well as overnight

•Encourage your daughter to join an activity they will enjoy - this is often where they make like minded friends. There are so many activities on offer from Rosso Choir, Touch, Netball, Librarian … the list goes on!

•Take care in how you talk about school and making friends - diffuse any ‘catastrophising’ from your daughter about teachers, classes, subjects, friends. Encourage her to speak to her teacher or other school personnel about any issues. Encourage her to look for the positives. Get her to shift up her routine - eg. if hanging out in the classroom at lunchtime isn’t helping her to make friends encourage her to head to the gym, library or quad instead!

We hope the start of the school year is going well from your perspective and we are looking forward to meeting again at our Whānau Evening where we have both a Year 7 session and a Year 8 session. At each session we delve into and discuss the unique needs of the year level and give whānau a chance to meet and talk with others. More information will be coming soon.

Library Wow! What a great start to the year! I have really enjoyed so many of the

girls coming in and taking books home to read. We have had some great

books arrive over the holidays, so it is exciting seeing them rush off the

shelves. As I have said to many of the girls who struggle to read ‘It is not

that you don’t like reading it’s just that you haven’t found the right book yet’

so it has been great to see so many of them ask me to help find them that

‘right’ book.

We have started off the year with a book mark competition, the winner will

get their design printed and their book mark handed out with issued books for

Term 1. We will run the competition all year with a winner announced each

term.

Student Librarian application forms are to be returned this Friday. Exciting!

Happy reading—Mrs McIntyre—Librarian

Chess Club - CHECKMATE! Our first Chess Club meeting will be held on Monday 18th February.

Our Chess Club meets every Monday afternoon in the Library after school between

3.15 - 4.15. We would love to see lots of new faces join us this year. We attend 2

Southland tournaments each year and welcome beginner and advanced players and

the girls are VERY patient at teaching complete newcomers to Chess such as myself.

Welcome back to our Year 11 students, family and whanau.

We hope that your daughter has made a settled start to the year and is

enjoying the challenge of Year 11.

Our school Powhiri brought both students, teachers, family and whanau

together, showing what a fantastic community we have. Thank you to Ashley

Putt -Fallows and Tia Fowle who spoke on behalf of the Year 11’s

In these first few weeks the girls have been talking and thinking about NCEA,

the vocabulary, learning and schedule that goes with it. It is important that

the girls don’t panic about the assessment and credit information, as

everyone goes through these initial worries and all will become clearer as the

term progresses. Shortly the girls will have deadlines to meet so they will

need to prioritise their learning areas to ensure work is completed to their

personal best.

AT teachers have been talking about daily, weekly and term planning, study,

commitments in and out of school, routines and attendance.

There are many supports available to the girls including AT’s, subject

teachers, YLC’s, careers, guidance, peers, family and whanau.

We look forward to seeing you all at our Parent and Whanau Information

night on Wednesday 20th February, where we can discuss further life as a

Year 11 student.

Again, we are here to help so if you have an issue, questions, or aspects to

celebrate please do not hesitate to call or email

Sports Report

Welcome to 2019, we are looking forward to your daughter being involved in a

sporting activity at school.

For the majority of our team sports trials are held and girls are to register their names

on the Sports Noticeboard. Information about the sport includes days the games are

played, possible training days, cost, when payment is due and when it starts is also

with the registration information. It is important to make sure that girls do not over

commit and are able to give full commitment to the team for training and games.

It is good practice for the girls to regularly check the notices, the Sports Noticeboard

or our Sporty website to keep up to date with trial information, game times and

tournament information. Whether taking a photo of the trial days and times on the

Sports Noticeboard or writing in their diaries is a good habit for their future years at

school.

Please note School policy requires payment in full with a permission slip by the due

date for your daughter to be eligible to participate in a sporting event, either team or

individual. Payments will be allocated to any unpaid fees and charges on your

daughter’s account first before she is eligible to play a sport.

In term 1, especially the first few weeks, we are often on a very tight deadline in

regards to team entries and individual registrations, so payment and permission slip

must be received by the due date or your daughter will be withdrawn from the team

which could affect the whole team and their entry into the competition.

For all Southland Secondary School events, girls must be entered via the school with

appropriate permission slips and payment handed in.

Our school Values of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity are important in all areas

and we want to continue to pride ourselves on our school values.

Wearing the correct sporting uniform, turning up to all trials, practices and games,

assisting in coaching or umpiring and playing for our school is what makes our school

community so successful.

It is important for all of our teams and the school that there is an adult supervising at

each game or event. This role would be to support the Coach, adult or student and the

team at the weekly games but does not require you to be present for practices.

We are also always looking for coaches for our sports teams. If you are interested in

coaching or being an adult supervisor please contact

[email protected]. It is now a requirement for all adult coaches

and managers to be police vetted. This process can begin as soon as you are

interested in coaching or managing a team and we can provide you with the

necessary paperwork.

Please ensure your daughter’s medical details have been updated on our school

system with Student Services as this information will be provided to the coach if there

are any medical concerns.

inSiGHtS 2019 PG13

All school students are encouraged to play sport for the school. Where the school provides a

sport, either a team or individual, then competing for the school and being involved in the

school community and abiding by our school values is important for all students. There are

certain circumstances where this may not be possible and playing for a club due to location is

more suitable. Should this be the case, dispensation is required by the school and can be

requested through Mrs Browning. Requests can be forwarded to

[email protected]

While the weather is warm there will be a number of activities for the girls to participate in at

lunchtime in the piazza, no competitions or trainings, just straight out fun!

We also have our PALS leaders within the school who will be organising activities, games,

quick competitions for the girls to do at lunchtime either outside or in the gym during the colder

months.

Farewell from Natalie Avellino—our Sports Co-ordinator

The end of 2018 was certainly an emotional

time, leaving SGHS after 12 years as Sports

Co-ordinator. I thoroughly enjoyed my time

and being involved with girls in a variety of

sports, and seeing so many achieve

outstanding results both individually and as

teams.

There were so many proud moments and I

really enjoyed acknowledging these

individuals and teams at assemblies and in

the newsletter, and further recognising their achievements at

Colours Awards at the end of term 3. There are so many

talented students with great potential and I look forward to

reading about SGHS students in the future, both on and off the

sporting field.

I would like to thank everyone for their support and working with

me and SGHS to help improve the quality of sport through so

many areas like, uniform, payments and permission slips in on

time, coaching, managing, playing, officiating, baking, fundraising

and supporting your daughter and SGHS. Please continue to

support this fantastic school and striving for excellence.

I have returned home to be with my family in Sydney and I am

now trying to get used to the heat again.

I will be back and look forward to supporting the girls again on

the sideline at some point throughout the year.

While a sports co-ordinator is still to be appointed, Assistant

Sports Co-ordinator, Kate Thomas, will be able to assist you or a

teacher in charge of the sport.

Thank you and all the best from Natalie Avellino.
