of three of the General Education areas and CDA. Again, this process is advantageous to both since the needs of the CDA majors are articulated and will already form part of the design for the preparatory courses.

A downside is that the studies are within the regular trimestral schedule and should be done in collaboration with as many members of the faculty as practicable, so the process cannot go as fast as we want to.

Six months into the job, I don’t want to test the gods, so I will not make a categorical stand that I already know the biggest challenge of this post. To date, however, I can say that change management is the exigency that needs to be implemented immediately with minimum fuss. With SMS being a big community, to say that this is a challenge is an understatement.

This is where the second goal of strengthening the culture of professionalism can be addressed. In a sense, this should not be a major concern since the assumption is that teachers are role models. However, this is not always the case, for one reason or another. As most students of

Dean Remedios LoricaThe School of Multidisciplinary Studies (SMS) plays a crucial role in molding Benildeans into holistic learners and leaders. Aside from offering a degree in Consular and Diplomatic Affairs (CDA), SMS also handles the General Education subjects of the College. Currently steering the SMS is Dean Remedios Lorica. She shares with the Benildean community her priorities on continuous curriculum review and the challenges to be overcome. On a lighter note, Dean Lorica also provides interesting insights on music, her thoughts about our students, and her idea of a perfect world.

1-2As a new Dean, what are your goals for the school? What is your biggest challenge as SMS Dean?

I’ll answer these two questions together.

Two medium- to long-term goals are our top priority: to have a thorough review of the General Education area and CDA program curriculum, and to strengthen the culture of professionalism among the faculty and staff of SMS. Both will directly impact on what should be the highest priority of SMS, that is, to significantly contribute to the optimum transformation of learners.

The curriculum review of the General Education area is part of an ongoing De La Salle Philippines (DLSP) program. A parallel study which complements the curriculum review effort is a revisit of the role of General Education courses in the total development of the Benildean graduate. It is a medium- to long-term goal because, although there should be milestones in terms of accomplishments along the way, the overall effort is normative and continuing and the desired results may be adjusted given changes in the environment. Currently under review are urgent concerns

The Ask Anything Campaign is a section of the perspective that allows members of the community, particularly students, to have their questions answered by a featured administrator. Administrators may choose to answer at least five questions and these will be printed in the perspective. Any additional questions and answers will be published in the DLS-CSB Intranet.

3politi cs know, this is an organizati onal reality. But changes will require ti me, sensiti vity and a politi cal will that should be sustained. As in the fi rst goal, what can be put in place, implemented and achieved readily will be the mechanisms, systems and protocols to guide certain acti ons and transacti ons.

What kind of music do you listen to? What can you say about the music that Benildean today like?

In this matt er, I think I was born old. Even when I was a kid, I kind of liked the standards and the classics or the mellow sounds, as we used to call them. I’m a person of habit, so I haven’t changed my preference. Maybe it was a result of a family requirement for me and my siblings to learn how to play the piano. I never did really learn how to do it well, but listening to all those pieces daily set me for life. I did like a lot of Beatles songs and some mellow jazz pieces.

Having said that, I don’t really mind listening to other genres, including the kind of music that most Benildeans connect with today. I listen to the lyrics, angst and all. Try to shut out some of the noise, and most of the ti mes, I appreciate where young people are coming from and the messages that they are sending. Music to me is a fun way to connect generati ons.

What is your first and/or usual impression of Benildean students?

That there is just so much variety and diversity in their outward manifestati ons. It is quite a task to try to label them outright or at all. I consider it a disti nct advantage that I normally don’t rely or dwell too much on fi rst impressions. I try my best to get to know more about a student, or anybody for that matt er, before I reach a

conclusion. Succeeding acti ons, events, actuati ons can change the impression.

If one will ask me, however, my fi rst reacti on to students when I enter a classroom, is that of anti cipati on. I like surprises, so I don’t mind being taken out of my comfort zone.

If you could create your own planet, what kind of beings would you want to live in it and what kind of environment would it have?

I was so tempted to say, perfect beings in a utopia.

Then I had a rethink -- because if I were the creator of that planet, what will I do with myself if there was nothing to improve on and nothing else to do? I may have saved myself loads of headaches and heartaches but I would have missed out on the fun too. You know, giving someone a conk in the head someti me, to put his brains in order will burn the extra calories from all that chocolate cake, don’t you think? I’m not espousing violence, it’s just an additi on to the menu of instructi onal methods.

I am actually comfortable with our earth with its fl owers and oceans and day and night, so I’d probably have it as a patt ern. Then, looking at you and me and all the citi zens of this world, aren’t we already confi gured for perfecti on by a Perfect Being? It’s up to you and me and every one else to live up to that level.

So, aft er much deliberati on I’d say, I’m not going to create a planet. I’d take care of this planet instead and live my life the best way possible, which is the least I can do to show my grati tude to the Perfect Being for His Grace in allowing us to stay here, for a ti me, to smell the fl owers.

HEART in Service: Ed Valenciano Donates His Paintings to Vatel Manila There is something new in DLS-CSB’s Vatel Manila Restaurant. Its walls are now adorned with eight abstract paintings, providing an additional flair to the interiors of the restaurant perfectly matching its sophisticated menu.

The paintings, altogether worth Php 95,000.00, were made and donated by Ed Valenciano, a faculty of the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management (SHRIM).

Valenciano, who is currently teaching Personality Development, believes that art is important as it develops appreciation for the finer things in life. The same is true in the business of service and excellence, where attention to detail and orderliness highly matters. This philosophy is something he wants to share with his students beyond lectures inside the classroom, as these are the same principles essential in the creation of fine art.

So for Valenciano, donating his paintings to Vatel Manila Restaurant was easy because it is similar to teaching wherein he is able to impart learning experiences.

Check out Mr. Ed Valenciano’s paintings, and visit the Vatel Manila Restaurant at the 12th floor of the DLS-CSB AKIC Campus.

The film festival featured a selection of Czech mainstream and independent films courtesy of the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

To launch the weeklong celebration, opening cocktails were served on October 4. The School of Hotel, Institution and Restaurant Management (SHRIM) prepared Czech delicacies such as fish fillet in a Czech beer batter, a traditional roast pork, and some Czech pastries. The Czech Embassy brought in Privo Praha beers, rounding off the Czech experience.

Vice Chancellor for Development and Institutional Relations Br. Dante Jose Amisola FSC, SDA Associate Dean

DLS-CSB School of Design and Arts (SDA), in partnership with the Embassy of Czech Republic in the Philippines, hosted The Czech Fest: A Cultural Experience from the Heart of Europe from October 4 to 8, 2010 at the 12th floor of SDA Campus.

Czech Culture Celebrated in SDA

Robin Serrano, SDA Digital Filmmaking Chairperson Jag Garcia, and other SDA administrators welcomed Ambassador Josef Rychtar of Czech Republic, Thelma Gecola of the European Union, Richard Kunzel of Goethe Institut-Philipinen and guests from the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Br. Dante and Amb. Rychtar delivered short messages of appreciation which were followed by video presentations about the Czech Republic. DLS-CSB Digital Filmmaking students showed the trailers of the lined-up films.

Aside from the film screenings, various Czech images were exhibited at the 12th floor and a lecture on Czech culture and history was given.

All 17 Lasallian institutions in the country are envisioned to become carbon neutral and have zero carbon footprint.

DLS-CSB, through the General Administrative Services Department’s Center for Housekeeping and Environmental Concerns (GASD-CHEC), formed an academic collaboration that will complement LIFE’s campaign while promoting environmental stewardship to Benildeans. Faculty and students are encouraged to integrate environmental advocacy in their curriculum, school projects and portfolios.

Last October 27, CHEC and the AB Multimedia Arts students came to an agreement of pushing the campaign 100 Ways in 100 Days, where students will be tapped to design environment-friendly materials that share tips on how to lower carbon footprint. Another project is the Styro-free and Plastic-less Campaign where the use of expanded polystyrene will be banned. The use of disposable plastic containers will likewise be minimized, and the use of reusable

container bags would be promoted as alternatives.

ONGOING GREEN PROJECTS

Apart from these new efforts, DLS-CSB continues to implement its ongoing green projects such as the use of e-jeepneys, electric-powered jeepneys that transport Benildeans around the College’s three campuses and the scheduling and monitoring of light usage to ensure energy efficiency. There are ongoing project studies for waterless urinals, local eco drip and water supply throttling as well.

Waste management initiatives are carried out through waste segregation, self-bussing and use of biodegradable plastics.

To improve air quality, particularly in the SDA campus, plants and rock gardens were introduced. The College also subscribes to using eco-friendly chemicals. Ph
