Model How to Treat Others with Kindness and Respect

Kids learn from adults’ actions. By treating others with kindness and respect, adults show the kids in their lives that there is no place for bullying. Even if it seems like they are not paying attention, kids are watching how adults manage stress and confl ict, as well as how they treat their friends, colleagues, and families.

Parents: Please help Muskogee Public Schools implement the best programs, policies and actions to end bullying by taking our “climate survey” online. Th e information we receive from this valuable survey helps us immeasurably, so we can help your children,

our students, feel welcome, accepted, loved and safe at school.

Visit our website at www.mpsi20.org and fi nd the link titled “Parent Climate Survey 2015” to take the anonymous survey.

Th ank you for you speaking up, speaking out and helping put a stop to bullying!

Kids learn from

Recognize the warning signs - your child could be being bullied, bullying others, or witnessing bullying. Although these signs could signal other issues, you should talk to your child if they display any sort of behavioral or emotional changes. Many times kids won’t ask for help, so it is important to know what to look for - such as frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness, changes in eating habits, & diffi culty sleeping or frequent nightmares.

Math Homework Tips for Parents

Encourage your child to use a daily math assign-ment book.

Follow the progress your child is making in math. Check with your child daily about his homework.

If you don’t understand your child’s math assign-ments, engage in frequent communication with his or her teacher.

If your child is experiencing problems in math, contact the teacher to learn whether he or she is working at grade level and what can be done at home to help improve academic progress.

Request that your child’s teacher schedule aft er-school math tutoring sessions if your child really needs help.

Advocate with the principal for the use of research-based peer tutoring programs for math. Th ese tutoring programs have proven results, and students really enjoy them.

Use household chores as opportunities for reinforcing math learning such as cook-ing and repair activities.

Try to be aware of how your child is being taught math, and don’t teach strategies and shortcuts that confl ict with the approach the teacher is using. Check in with the teacher and ask what you can do to help. Ask the teacher about online resources that you can use with your child at home.

At the beginning of the year, ask your child’s teacher for a list of suggestions that will enable you to help your child with math homework.

Reading Homework Tips for

Parents Have your child read aloud to you every night.

Choose a quiet place, free from distractions, for your child to do his nightly read-ing assignments.

As your child reads, point out spelling and sound patterns such as cat, pat, hat.

When your child reads aloud to you and makes a mistake, point out the words she has missed and help her to read the word correctly.

Aft er your child has stopped to correct a word he has read, have him go back and reread the entire sentence from the beginning to make sure he understands what the sentence is saying.

Ask your child to tell you in her own words what happened in a story.

To check your child’s understanding of what he is reading, occasionally pause and ask your child ques-tions about the characters and events in the story.

Ask your child why she thinks a character acted in a certain way and ask your child to support her answer with information from the story.

Before getting to the end of a story, ask your child what he thinks will happen next and why.

Become a class parent! You’ll develop a closer relationship with the teacher and will get an inside look into what goes on in the classroom, usually without having to commit a ton of time. Class parents organize other parent volunteers for par-ties and events, may help the teacher create a newsletter, or might document the school year in photos. Ask the teacher what his or her specifi c needs will likely be this year. MPS no longer requires you to fi ll out an application and wait for a back-ground check to be returned - instead you can scan your drivers license in our Lobby Guard system in the front offi ce and begin volunteering immediately!

Become a volunteer!

Varsity Volleyball Proves Successful Volume 98, Issue 1

The Pride Plays Some Funky Music For Their Fans The Pride has been practicing each morning starting at 7:30, and every Thursday evening from 6-8. Their theme is called, “Play That Funky Music” and they already have four songs ready to perform. Bruce Thompson, head director of the Pride of Muskogee, said he has been teaching for 37 years and acted as head director at MHS for two. The first competition for the band is October 3rd which is less than a month away. This year’s band is bigger than last year’s group. And although they are larger, they don’t feel they have improved as much as they will eventually. About 80% of what they

have done is competition-ready. “We’re perfect for a ball game, but not for contest,” Mr. Thompson said. This year’s show is particu-larly special to him. “This is the

The school year always starts with varsity volleyball well into their schedule, which this year, has been very tough. According to Coach John Ham-mer, that is what has made them bet-ter. “We have a lot of younger players, so I am very pleased with the prog-ress so far,” he stated after their most recent win. They are 10-8 for the season so far with several matches left to go. Hoping to continue their winning season, they face East Central next. Abby Wayman aces the other team with a hard serve.

Alice Robertson’s New Tech team - seventh graders in Mary Flusche’s science class, took third place in the races and the Best Team Effort Awards at the 2015 River Rum-ba Regatta last Saturday.

The team entered two boats - ‘The Number 2 Pencil” and ”The Big Mistake Eraser.”

Though “Number 2,” the pencil boat was really “Number 1” as it won both of its heats, and took third overall for speed in their age group.

The eraser boat fell apart after the first race - making it truly a “Big Mistake.”

Nonetheless, showing true grit and determination, the paddlers dove right in and swam the boat across the finish line, where at the end the rest of the team swam out to meet them and helped them cross, earning them the Best Team Effort Award.
