The North Idaho College Booster Club is a nonprofit organization, committed to providing financial support to all recognized intercol-legiate athletic programs at NIC through various fund-raising and en-dowment activities for student ath-lete grant-in-aid and team benefits. Organized in the 1960s, the Booster

Club supports all NIC recognized in-tercollegiate athletics as a lifelong learning experience that will enhance the value of sportsmanship and pro-vide a positive experience for stu-dent athletes, students, and fans. The club also recognizes the commit-ment our athletes make to the young people of our community through our

athletic Cardinal Kids outreach pro-grams. The Booster Club holds vari-ous fund-raising events throughout the year including an annual auction, awards banquet, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and golf tournament. It also sponsors a booth each year at the North Idaho Fair and operates a con-cession stand at all home events.

AL WILLIAMS

Welcome back to the start of another year of Cardinal Athletics! Our summers keep getting busier with more camps, fundraisers, and yes, golf tournaments! We’ve hired new coaches, gradu-ated many student athletes, and seen changes in our Booster Club board.

We bid farewell to our friend and family mem-ber Ginni Lenz, who served on our Booster Club Board for many years and was recognized as the Booster Club Member of the year in 2010. After a long battle with Cancer, Ginni is now at peace, but wow did she “FIGHT LIKE A GIRL”. That was the battle cry during Ginni’s bout with Cancer, and in her true fighting spirit she defied the odds for more than two years after being diagnosed. Several fundraisers for Cancer Awareness were established on her behalf in the Coeur d’Alene area, includ-ing a softball tournament named, of course “THE FIGHT!” Go to https://www.facebook.com/team-FIGHTlikeAgirl for more information on this soon to be annual event, and other cancer awareness links on Ginni’s behalf. She was a true fan of all sports, and loved providing the most for student-athletes! We will miss her!

We give a big Thank You to departing Boost-er Club Board members Julie Stark, Mike O’Brien, and Steve Casey! All served on the Board for many years and many committees, and served us well. We know we will still see you at the games! Mike O’Brien will relocate to Mos-cow to take over operations of the Best Western- University Inn, so his commute may be a little tougher!

We say Hello to two new Board members Casey Irgens and Rann Haight. Casey is a for-

The third annual Coeur d’Alene Crossing, a 2.4 mile open water swimming event on Lake Coeur d’Alene, was held on Saturday, August 16th, and Kade Hern, 17, of Coeur d’Alene, was the top finisher. Kade swims with the Coeur d’Alene Area Swim Team (CAST) and rose from the water with a time of 48:59. Hern’s time was just off the record time set last year at 44:55, and only a few minutes ahead of the field.

Contributions for the CDA Crossing were raised from sponsors, private donations and participant registration. The proceeds from the event are equitably shared with the NIC Booster Club, Union Gospel Mission, and CAST. This year’s CDA Crossing attracted

nearly 200 registered swimmers and gener-ated additional donations close to $15,000.

Each not-for-profit organization involved should receive over $5,000 to support their respective charities after expenses. This year the CDA Crossing joined forces with two other local triathlon events, the CDA Mara-thon and the CDA Fondo, a 126 mile bike ride. Participants completing all three events in one calendar year will earn a medallion representing the Coeur d’Alene Iron Series.

The event begins from Discovery Marina at Arrow Point and ends at the Hagadone Event Center beach, and attracted swimmers from age 10 to 71. Go to www.cdacrossing.com for complete race details and results.

VOLLEYBALLThe volleyball team had an excellent

training camp as we approach the start of the season. In a recap of last season I am excited to announce that all of our sophomores will be moving on and playing next year at four year schools. Alli-son Meehan, signed with Division I San Jose in California, Katie Schueman signed with NAIA, Webber International in Florida, Anyssa Matheson signed with Divis ion II Texas A&M Kings-ville in Texas, Tessa Sian signed with NAIA Dickinson State University in North Dakota, Russia Rob-inson signed with NAIA Lewis Clark State College and Leeta Grap signed with Divi-sion II New Mexico University.

I am super excited for the girls and look forward to hear how they do next year.

This year’s team has returners in key po-sitions beginning with captain Kennedy Chadwick as our starting libero. Maddi Seidl brings experience from the setter posi-tion, and Britany Aldridge is an explosive outside hitter. We are happy to welcome new Cardinals to the family, including Brenna Meehan from Post Falls. We have been lucky to have had her two older sisters and we look forward to see what Brenna brings to the court. Our inside presence comes from Dzeni Hadzisehovic, a 6’4” transfer from Western Wyoming College, and Matilda Altin, a 5’11” middle from Sweden.

I not only look forward to the develop-ment of this team, but also the opportunity of being their new head coach. I thank ev-eryone for their support and hope to see you all in the stands at the Spokane Travel NW Invitational at the HUB, August 21-23, and this coming fall cheering your Cardinals on!

MEN’S SOCCERMen’s Soccer’s Christian Botuli and

Adam Talley have represented the Cardi-nals well so far in the Evergreen Premier League. Talley earned minutes in each of the Spokane Shadow’s first three games. Talley

and Botuli both started against Westsound FC as Talley scored a goal in the Shadow’s first win of the season. Botuli also started against South Sound FC the following day as a defensive midfielder. Will Mecier and Tanner Jones have signed with Concordia University, and Dylan Allen is committed to Carroll College.

The soccer sea-son is well underway with preseason train-ing and exhibitions coming quickly. We had a solid season of recruiting. Lo-cals Aaron Cross-ingham , Braden Ridgewell, and Tony Quesne l l s igned in May. Mitch Markovetz, a goalkeeper from Boise also signed earlier in the month. Macoy McClaughlin of Great Falls, MT, and Taylor Haman and David Geske of Twin Falls, ID have now signed as well. McClaughlin and Geske are both defenders, Haman is a crafty, athletic attacker. Men’s Soccer has completed their fall schedule which includes three matches against four year schools. In pre-season, NIC will host Trinity Western on August 22nd and travel to Whitworth on the 23rd. The Cardinals’ first league match is August 30th against South Puget Sound CC at home. Come enjoy some high energy soccer with a tough NWAC schedule.

WOMEN’S SOCCERMost of the Spring was spent scram-

bling to get geared up for playing in the NWAC this Fall, and a big part of that was working with current players and commit-ted players to adjust their scholarships to conform to the NWAC standards. We were able to get our entire roster within NWAC limits so we can now com-pete in the NWAC playoffs this season. The change of conferences may actually help

us sign more players from Seattle or Port-land as now we’ll be playing games closer to those locales and families will be able to watch daughters or sisters play more often than in past years.

We have a full schedule of games this season complemented by league rivals in the NWAC. Our season opens up over Labor Day Weekend with a tough match-up with Lane College on August 30. Lane returns an experienced roster from a 14-5-3 sea-son and an NWAC playoff berth last year. We return to action on Tuesday September 2 with an afternoon game against Tacoma Community College. This season we have a balanced schedule, with 10 home games and 10 road contest, without any games versus Club teams.

I hope all of you enjoyed your Summer, played a little golf, and are ready for NIC soccer this Fall.

Go Cardinals!

WRESTLINGThe Wrestling program issued its

13,000th book this summer when we visited Sorenson Magnet el-ementary school in June. Mayor Steve Widmyer was a guest reader for the students, and each student received a personal book. The only requirement is the student must read the book to some-one! The reading program was estab-lished in 2002 in a partnership with Parker Toyota. It was named in honor of Doug Parker’s late wife Shirley, who was a big supporter of reading and wrestling. The pro-gram puts at least one book in the hands of every first grader in the Coeur d’Alene school district each year.

As the school year is about to kick off, the Wrestling program would also like to give back to the community by sponsor-ing the 2nd Annual Free School Supplies to School Age Kids . On August 27 from 10:00am – 2:00pm (or as long as supplies last), the NIC Wrestling team will be distrib-

excellent season finishing 22-10. Coaches Chris and Carey Carlson have

been busy making an impact in the com-munity by putting on two very successful camps at NIC this past summer and coach-ing the North Idaho Elite high school team at eight highly competitive tournaments this past April – July.

They finished off this spring/summer sea-son with a 37-8 record winning three cham-pionships, finishing second twice, and third three times.

MEN’S BASKETBALLHope all of you have had a great summer.

It has been a little crazy in the Men’s Bas-ketball offices. As you are probably aware I have recently taken over the program due to coach Phay’s departure to CSI. We wish coach Phay and his family much success in his new position. This has been a great op-portunity for me and my staff to continue the success of the coaching staffs before us. I was fortunate enough to retain coach Thane Jackson who has been a vital part of our suc-cess over the past 2 seasons. This is our first win over coach Phay and CSI with hopefully

many more to come. Thane and I have been extremely busy this offseason try-ing to build a team of great student/athletes. We have a great core group re-turning, and have been successful on the recruiting trail.

Returning for the Cardinals is Jamaal Robateau who red-shirted for us last season and will play a vital role in our team success this coming year. We also return 3 high school team-mates Will Dorsey, Jordan King, and Fuquan Niles as well as Ty Higbie from CDA. These returners played a big role in our overall success last season and we have high expectations for them in the coming year.

We are very pleased to keep incoming freshman Kyle Guice (6’8) in CDA. Kyle had a great career at LCHS and we look forward to the same at NIC. Often your best recruiters are your players. With the help of the 3 Rainer Beach returners, we were able to sign Minnesota signee Djuan Piper. Djuan (6’7) guard that is extremely excited to be a part of the Cardinal family.

On the foreign list will be incoming freshman Braian Angola (6’6) guard, Lucas Antunez (6’3) guard, both from Findlay Prep High School in Las Vegas, and D ’Adrian Allen (6’8) who is a transfer from Palm Beach State.

The Cardinals have also welcomed 2 other transfers Austin Pope (6’6) guard

from Cerritos College CA, and David Baze (6’6) guard from Pierce CC WA. Both have been successful in their past seasons. Our recruiting class is rounded out by incoming freshmen Ziggy Satterhwaite (6’5) post, and Marcus Harris (6’3) guard, both from the Puyallup WA area, and Charlie Lock-wood, a 6’11’’ center from Inglewood, Calif.

We as a staff have worked hard putting this roster together. We are excited about the future of NIC Cardinal Basketball and look forward to getting to work with these young student/athletes. We truly believe that this upcoming season will be one that we will never forget. Thanks again for all your sup-port. Without the support of our great boost-er club none of this would be possible.

Go Cards!

SOFTBALLIn a season recap from the Scenic West Ath-letic Conference the softball team had four players selected to the SWAC All-Region teams. Sophomore Kylene Hatton earned 1st team outfield honors. Hatton hit .401 for the season. Hatton was also selected to play for the NJCAA All-Star team in the Canadian Cup in July. This team was made up of the top players in the country. Freshman Mad-

die Anthony earned 1st team All-Region honors for the infield. Anthony hit .392 for the season and was selected to the SWAC All-Tournament team for her performance at the regional tour-nament. Freshman Miranda Powless earned 1st team All-

Region honors as a pitcher with a 10-5 re-cord on the season. Freshman Marissa Tarin earned 2nd team All-Region honors for in-field with a .376 batting average. We are now finalizing our recruiting to fill our roster for the upcoming season.

GOLFThe NIC men and women golf teams fin-ished their final season in the NJCAA on a high, qualifying for the NJCAA national golf championships. The men ended the sea-son with the highest ranking in school histo-ry at No. 7, and finished 15th at the national tournament. Freshman Angus Montgomery earned NJCAA honorable mention recog-nition by individually finishing 12th place

overall. Prior to the national tournament several Cardinals re-ceived honors. Mont-gomery was selected for the Phil Mickel-son award, presented to the top NJCAA Division I Fresh-man, and 1st team All-American rec-ognition by the Golf

Coaches Association of American. He will be attending Gonzaga University on a golf scholarship next season. Teammates Chris Cremer, Tanner Martin, and Michael Por-ter were selected to the All-District team. The women’s golf teams entered the NJCAA tournament ranked No. 14 in the nation and finished in that position at the nation-al tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida. Sophomores Jennie Williams and Madison Hauck finished their Cardinal career with two national tournament appearances, and freshmen Elsa Goodsen and Jenna Kaik return after a solid tournament performance. Both the men and women’s golf teams will compete in the Northwest Athletic Confer-ence (NWAC) beginning this fall.
