ISSUE I JANUARY 2016 Athletic Club of the Sandhills January 2016 We are excited for the New Year and plan to make 2016 the best year yet for all of you, our members. In 2015, we experienced some amazing success in all areas of the club. While we also saw some changes, challenges and adversity we want you to know that this year, our focus is going to be on YOU, our member. Many of our recent discussions have been about how we feel we are somewhat disconnected from our members as a whole. We know that we can be much better at making your experience here at AC Sandhills better in every way and that is our goal in this new year. I would like to introduce you to our new monthly newsletter. In the past, we have sent out a lot of emails…too many really. We want to curtail this and give you an opportunity to see everything you need to know at once. instead of having to sift through the emails to find what you need. This newsletter should serve as a tool for us to communicate to you about our entire club all at once and keep you informed of the most important things happening. In the future, when you receive an email from ACS you’ll know it is something you need to open and read instead of just another email to “delete”. Our newsletter will have sections staff, spotlight pieces on players and coaches, exclusive opportunities for our membership, and much more! We hope that this is both entertaining and informative to you! We would like to thank all of you who chose AC Sandhills as your home for sports, and want to make sure this is where you stay to play and have fun. ACS U12G Orange Soccer are NCYSA Open Division Champions The AC Sandhills Orange U12 girls' soccer team were crowned champions of the 2015 Fall North Carolina Youth Soccer League in the East Open Division on November 1st. This is the highest competitive league in the state of North Carolina in the U12 age group. The girls finished the season with six wins, one tie, and one loss. Well done players, parents & coaches! ACS Proud!

Coaches’ Corner Director of Coaching: Trevor Spencer

“As we embark on a new year and new season of travel soccer, our goal is to provide all players, coaches, and parents a great soccer experience both on and off the field.

We will focus on creating a great training environment where players can continue to develop technically, tactically, physically, and socially. I will be working closely with our very competent coaching staff on a regular basis to ensure that our players are having fun, sharpening their skills, and competing in practice and matches.

We know that our players are always looking for more ways to improve their craft, so we will offer/provide multiple camps, speciality clinics, personal trainings, and timely feedback throughout the year.

AC Sandhills travel teams enjoyed much success during the Fall 2015 season, and we are excited to see what Spring 2016 will bring. Stay tune as we strive to take the ACS travel soccer experience to another level!

AC Sandhills Recreation soccer has provided recreational soccer to the Sandhills area for over 20 years.

Soccer begins with our Mini Kickers program for 2-4 year olds. We love to start at this age to begin exposing the kids to the love of the beautiful game early. Mini Kickers is a 6-week program that meets once a week (either Wednesday or Thursday) Lucy Nobel is our director for the Mini Kickers league.

Our U6 Program runs for 8-week and is Co-Ed. U6 is offered in the Spring & Fall months. This age group meets once a week on Saturday mornings. There are currently two sessions each Saturday; 9:00am-9:50am or 10:00am-10:50am. The U6 Program is coached by Julio Penalillo.

Beginning at U8, players are placed in our traditional recreational soccer league. There are divisions for U8 and up. In this team based league players are introduced to a team structure and enjoy their own coach. Training is held twice a week (Monday thru Thursday) with time slots starting at 5pm

and varies for each team. Games are held on Saturday mornings with the first games beginning at 9am. This is a 10 week program with a culminating recreational tournament at the end to wrap up the season.

As you all may know, lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the country and the fastest game on two feet!  The AC Sandhills Girls Lacrosse Program has continued to help grow the game of lacrosse while providing a fun, positive experience for all players, cultivating great players and great people.  Over the last three years, our lacrosse program has doubled and has seen some great accomplishments.  Our 3rd/4th Grade recreation team won the Championship at the Pumpkin Shootout this past fall and our travel teams continue to improve their records in regional tournaments.  We now have multiple players competing at the next level on Collegiate Teams, and most recently, one of our very own players (Jennifer Woods) has made the Welsh National Lacrosse Team!  Not only have our players succeeded on the field, they continue to foster a culture of inclusion and represent our community well.  Our high school players have truly taken accountability for helping grow the sport they love by volunteering their time to coach.  We could not run our recreation leagues without their help, and the young players are loving it.

We hope more and more girls take advantage of our lacrosse programs and the opportunity to get involved in a team sport! Participation in any sport is invaluable and lacrosse is special.

ACS Volleyball January 2016

The ACS Girls Volleyball program just kicked off their 5th season as a club!

We started out as 1 Team and have grown to 7 Teams, with a successful Developmental Academy Program, for U12’s!  We currently have 75 players as a part of our program, from U12 to U18.

Teams play primarily in local region Tournaments, with our older teams traveling to out of State Weekend Tournaments in Virginia & South Carolina.

Our Developmental Academy is in its 2nd year and has grown to 2 Teams that will play against other developmental programs in North Carolina.  We have already seen the success of that program filtering into our U13 & U14 Teams!

We have also welcomed several new coaches to our club that have both coached and/or played at a high level.  Many of our Coaches have played in College, and bring a love and passion for the sport to ACS!  All of our coaches are licensed with USA Volleyball, with 2 Coaches recently attended a national clinic led by Division 1 & National Team Coaches.

Although, our indoor travel season is underway, we plan to host a series of indoor & outdoor tournaments throughout the year.

Good luck to our club teams traveling to Charlotte for the

“Queen City Classic” on February 6 & 7.

The ACS Lakers Youth Triathlon Club just completed our 4th successful racing season!  The club has hosted & sponsored 6 local competitions, since 2012, that range between 50-75 racers.

We have about 35 youth athletes that train from April to September, in the Seven Lakes & Pinehurst area.  The multi-sport

of Triathlon consists of Swimming, Biking & Running…ALL in the same race!

These young athletes train in all disciplines to prepare them for races locally and throughout the state.  This sport is unique in that it allows youth to come together collectively as a Team, while competing individually no matter what their ability is.  Training is conducted in all three disciplines of the sport, including swimming in a pool or open water.

The trained coaching staff works with all the kids to learn about the various disciplines of the multi-sport as well as living a healthy lifestyle.  Athletes all train together, and provide support to each other the entire season, especially on race day!!   Keep an eye on the ACS website for the 2016 Registration & Season details in late March!  We hope you will come check us out!!

Club News January 2016

HOWARD CARPENTER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FUND One of our main goals, in ensuring no player is left behind, is making sure youth have  the opportunity to be in a healthful, active environment, lowering the chance for juvenile delinquency; as well as, to help create a solid pathway for our youth to actualize the importance of a higher education. Teaching healthful living is more important than ever, with a 30% childhood obesity rate in Moore county; the need for positive, athletic outlets is great. Furthermore, 22% of children in Moore county live below the poverty level and more than 46% receive free or reduced price meals at school. Therefore, the need to combat these issues, through the HCFA fund, is great.
