Sixth Form Formal Staff and students of Lagan College turned out in style at their Sixth Form Formal evening held in The Clandeboye Lodge on Friday 7th March. A delicious meal was enjoyed by all before taking to the dance floor where they danced the night away. Approximately 200 students and fifty staff attended the glamorous event which had been meticulously planned by the Formal Committee. The formal came to a close for staff after midnight but the night was still young for the students who continued their evening into the wee small hours at Mynt, Belfast.

On 7th March, a group of 40 students from Chartres, a town south east of Paris, spent the morning in the College. They were participating in a fact finding visit to Ireland as part of a project on reconciliation. They had heard about the work of Lagan College through research in their school. They spent the morning visiting a number of French classes but the main purpose was to interview and record what our pupils thought of integrated education and life in Northern Ireland. A number of our Senior students ably obliged them with a question and answer session in the Library. Not only did the Chartres group gain an honest and thorough insight into how our pupils see life in Northern Ireland and the bright future for integrated education, they were treated to an impromptu concert with the singing of ‘I’ll tell me Ma!’ and Aoife Crolly’s superb Irish dancing. Once again, our students acted as great ambassadors for the College and Integrated Education by just be-ing themselves! Mr D McNally

French Play If you thought speaking French was hard, try acting it! On Wednesday the 2nd of April we were visited by the “French Theatre for Schools”- a collection of French actors who performed for us “Le Texte Perdu”. The hilarious and high energy script was challenging but easy to follow and highly entertaining, especially when it involved dragging unsuspecting students on stage! From dancing the Macarena to Joe’s solo guitar performance complete with dancing cast, many students were involved throughout testing both their French and their boundaries! We all enjoyed the performance and were encouraged by the fact that we could follow the action without subtitles. We’d love to see the “French Theatre Group” again next year, with fresh GCSE students to embarrass! Alice Taylor and Emma Gallen Year 13

Readathon Readathon was founded in 1984 to encourage children to read more books. The stimulus that books give to children’s imaginations is priceless. Not only are literacy skills developed but pupils are given the opportunity to raise money for two very worthwhile charities. Since it began, Readathon has raised well over ten million pounds for charity. Last year alone, Readathon raised £1.1 million to help sick children. The money is split between two charities: CLIC Sargent and The Roald Dahl Foundation. The money raised is used to help victims and their families cope with horrific diseases, such as cancer, Hodgkin’s disease, leukaemia, epilepsy, blood disorders and head injuries. For the third year running, Lagan College pupils eagerly participated in the Readathon challenge, with outstanding results! Year 8 pupils were excused from regular English lessons, in favour of reading. The pupils read books and got sponsored to do it! During the week many friends and family members were ‘hit’ for sponsorship money with pupils reading anything they could get their hands on from comics to magazines to newspapers to novels. Prizes were presented to those who raised the most money - competitive fever engulfed the English classrooms! Some individuals made outstanding contributions; Victoria Powell of 8BLA raised an impressive £91. Topping that, Talitha Taylor of 8MHD raised a staggering £130. Special mention goes to Amy McClintock of 8MHD for raising the highest amount in Year 8 with a whopping £200. Well done girls! 8BLA were successful in raising the highest class total with an amazing £883, closely followed by 8MHD who were only pounds behind them. Obviously this caused no sour grapes between Miss Bell and Mr Killen who teach those classes respectively! Special thanks was also paid to Brenda, the Assistant Bursar, for working hard behind the scenes, counting all the money and sorting out gift aid claims. We are very grateful to her for all her hard work. Claire McAuley, Event Fundraising Manager, from CLIC Sargent kindly agreed to come and receive the cheque during Year 8 assembly. She spoke of children with cancer that the charity has worked with and showed Year 8 how young children are educated about their medication, with the aid of a play specialist and a teddy bear. Claire was overwhelmed with the amount Lagan pupils had raised - £3218.21 - and congratulated us warmly. Claire stated, “Please pass on my thanks and congratulations to the girls and boys for all their hard work and wonderful fundraising.” This is a huge achievement by Year 8. We have previously strived to reach £3000 and this year we more than did it! Lagan College is now well on their way to achieving their goal of raising an overall £10,000 for Readathon! Readathon is an excellent initiative as it not only helps fund two worthwhile charities that help care for sick and dying children, but it also encourages you and me, the people who fund these charities, to read more. All pupils who took part in the Readathon should be very proud of themselves – you have set a very high standard for next year! Miss M Bell

World Maths Day Wednesday 5th March 2008 Lagan College took part along with over 1 million students from 160 countries around the world to set a new WORLD RECORD by answering nearly 200 million questions! We had 126 participants on the day from Years 8, 9 and 10. They competed against students from as far away as China, Australia and South America as well as pupils more close to home such as France, Italy and England. It was a race against time to complete sums and there was a lot of excitement, pressure and enjoyment. The winner in our school was Christopher Jones (8 BLA) with a fantastic score of 671! Twenty pupils achieved certificates for great scores overall. Congratulations and well done to all who participated. The Maths Dept

Money Talks On 1 April 2008, Citizens Advice and Northern Bank re-launched an award-winning range of personal finance educational resources for young people in Northern Ireland and our school was invited to participate in the launch. A group of Year 12 Business Studies students and Miss Atkinson took part in the ‘Money Talks’ programme which is a locally produced teaching resource pack dealing with issues such as consumer rights, overspending on credit cards and spiraling debt. Chris McKinley and Laura McConville were interviewed for an appearance on GM:TV and the event was captured on film and broadcast on April 1st. The session was led by Vanessa Postle from Northern Bank and included watching a DVD (drama produced by the Nerve Centre in Derry featuring a young man who finds himself in debt), practical money management activities, and a huge board game with inflatable dice. Each student received a handbook containing detailed information on each of the topics covered which are: consumer rights, income, banking, savings, credit, debt and budgeting. Northern Bank aim to tackle the growing problem of consumer debt by offering this free programme to all students aged 11-17 in Northern Ireland, and we were very pleased to have been invited to take part in this exciting launch. Many thanks to all involved. Mrs K Bingham

St. Patrick’s Day Céilí

March came round again and it was time for the legendary annual Lagan College Céilí! It took place on the 13th and as usual was very well attended by staff and students from all year groups. The dances were called by the legendary Mr G. ‘fear a tí’ Lenaghan, aided by the equally legendary Miss O’Connor, and were eagerly participated in by all. Mr Patton treated us to a recital of his own compositions on the ‘cláirseach’ or ancient Irish bardic harp. What a man! As well as the usual special display of Irish dancing by the ‘Trim the Velvet’ school of Irish dancing, including our very own Toni Jordan 15MCY, there was also a beautiful piece of interpretative dancing using traditional and modern dance forms and featuring the dance skills of Harley Hughes 11PTN, Aoife Crolly 12MAX, Mikaela Hepburn 11DWD, Zara Philpott 10 CL, and Ella McEwen 10CD. The traditional music group comprising Joe Campbell-McArdle 13MGN on guitar, Anna Scott 9OCN on fiddle, Stephen Ebbinghaus 14WLS on tin whistle and Eilidh McCann 11PTN on flute kept the evening swinging with a selection of jigs and reels! As usual the music for the céilí dancing was provided by John and Patsy of the John McGurran Céilí Band. It was a great night’s craic - a truly integrated event! Mr G Lenaghan

Year 13 Work Experience Each pupil in Year 13 got the opportunity to experience one week in a working environment from 25th – 29th February. The main aim of the work experience was to give students an insight into the world of work and to provide an opportunity for them to gain first hand information as to what particular jobs entail. It involved students taking on the role of a young worker and: Undertaking work tasks; Using and developing work and employability skills; Being involved in work processes; and Experiencing work environments. Examples of just some of the placements our pupils are involved in: Medicine, Media, Law, Engineering, Teaching and Public Relations. Here are some thoughts of work experience from our pupils: “I really enjoyed my placement; I learnt how to deal with children with different needs. I feel teaching may be a future career for me.” Janine, Greenwood House Assessment Centre. “Being in court was more of an experience than being in an office, I got to learn all about some cases and how they were dealt with.” Kelley, Solicitors “I thought my placement would have involved me working at a computer all day. I never expected to get as much as I did out of my experience. I even obtained a certificate in Food Safety.” Clare, Mount Charles Catering “My placement was brilliant! As well as observing MLAs at work in Stormont, I also got to see debates in the chamber, I accompanied Anna Lo to a TV interview, and went canvassing with student youth officers at QUB.” Joe, Parliament Buildings “One of my tasks during work experience was to help in the editing suite working on ‘The One Show’.” Chloe, Waddell Production Studios Many thanks to Miss P Emerson for assisting with the work experience visiting. Eco-News The Lagan College Eco-Club recently planted twelve oak trees in the College grounds with the assistance of National Trust Member, Mr Gary Thompson. 12 students were involved with the tree planting along with Mr Patton and everyone had great fun. The National Trust has 100 years of service to the community and is still going from strength to strength. Gary Thompson got down and dirty and praised us all for our hard work. Many thanks to Mr Patton for organising the event and to Gary Thompson from the National Trust for all his advice and assistance. Thanks also to our photographers Matt Grimes and Christopher Barr and to my assistant reporter Sarah Campton. Michael McNulty 8BRD

What an amazing start to 2008 for Year 8 ice figure skating star Dempsey Andrews. After receiving a special recognition ceremony held in her honour by the Mayor of Castlereagh, Myreve Chambers, Dempsey then performed with the world famous Russian Ice Stars for eight performances at the Mil-lennium Forum. This success was followed when Olympic champions Torvill and Dean launched their Make Me a Star Show and amazingly the producers contacted Dempsey to arrange interviews and to film her in action. Dempsey’s skating footage was then broadcast to the nation out of thousands of entries. Dempsey then spent a week at the Ice Skating Academy of Excellence in Coventry where coach, Yuri Bureyko, offered her a place which means she will attend the academy on a monthly basis. Dempsey will also continue training with her own coach, past Lagan College student, Caroline Gill, at the Dundonald Ice Bowl. After suffering a serious injury, Dempsey defied all the odds and travelled to Bristol National Open Championships in March to win another silver medal. Congratulations Dempsey from everyone at Lagan College. We’ll be keeping a close eye on your progress!

Inter-school AS level Religious Studies Conference

“Building Friendships – and get a better grade!” Four visiting schools took part in a unique event hosted, organised and delivered by the RE department. The day was spent looking at perception, writing techniques, revision skills and the big issue of how to answer part B questions! Our partners in this project were our friends at Youthlink who accessed the funding for the course and our thanks go to Paul McCrory (past pupil and now youth worker) for his input and assistance. The visiting schools were Little Flower Girls, Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College, St Louise’s and Dungannon Integrated. A total of 63 students took part in the day and we also had a visit from Bill Latimer the Religious Studies Advisor for both the Belfast and South Eastern Education and Library boards’. This event was hopefully the first such day as we aim to build partnerships with other schools. Thanks to Mr Hare, Ms Sullivan and Ms Lemon for their help. Mr B Dowd

NORTHERN IRELAND ROTARY CLUB PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION 2008

Lagan College won this prestigious competition for the second time in three years. On the last occasion, we travelled to Manchester to compete at the U.K final. This year we travel to London to represent Northern Ireland at the end of April. Our winning team, consisting of Sarah Lightfoot, Sophie Cann and Carla McGaharan, will speak on the subject of Eating Disorders and have a total of 10 minutes to present their ideas to a large audience – and it has to be off by heart without notes! No pressure then, girls! Needless to say, we are delighted with the win, having beaten off competition from Campbell College, Strathearn Grammar and Bloomfield Collegiate. We look forward to a fantastic trip, a great opportunity and some shopping! Miss Clohessy

Commonwealth Day - Youth Parliament In March, a group of Year 10 pupils attended the Commonwealth Day Youth Parliament at Stormont. The morning began with a formal debate, in the grand surroundings of the Senate chamber, chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly - David McClarty. Ryan McNaney, Ashleigh Allen, Rhiannon Stewart and Claire Rattray performed brilliantly as Lagan’s named speakers, especially as the other schools attending, had brought much older pupils. Our named speakers were well supported by Sarah Bingham and David McGibbon who bravely stood up to ask probing questions in the open floor section of the debate. Everyone was impressed at the standard of the debate and the Environment Minister Arlene Foster said the speeches would not have been out of place in the actual parliament. Later we got to see the real Northern Ireland Assembly in action, when we spotted many of our most well known politicians. In the afternoon, after speeches by Arlene Foster and the Chief Political Advisor to the Head of the Commonwealth, the First Minister - Ian Paisley - presented Lagan College with a very impressive crystal bowl as a memento of a very enjoyable and prestigious occasion. As part of our AS German Course we had the great opportunity of visiting the most historic part of Germany, Berlin. To get a feel for the city, we were involved in a four hour bike tour! Yes, we thought exactly the same as you; boring, could we be bothered? But we couldn’t have been more wrong. It was the best way to visit the whole of East and West Berlin, rather than trooping around on foot! Later that night we were able to view the beautiful city from the TV Tower, getting to see the different sites we seen earlier during the day. The next day we had an early start as we had a long trip to the Kaiser Wilhelm Church which is also linked to the Cross of Nails. After visiting the memorial church we enjoyed a lovely German coffee and cake, also including a visit to the Ka De We, the Harrods of Germany. We had a packed full day as we finally visited the German Government, the Reichstag. Tuesday night we had the great enjoyment of trying to understand a German film called “Keinohrhasen,” The Bunny With No Ears”. It was however better than it sounds, although we only worked out the punch line a couple of days later. Our last night in Berlin was great because we got the chance to go to the Theatre. We saw Cabaret which was really good. The songs were sung in different languages so we were able to understand the ones in English. Luckily it wasn’t an exercise of trying to translate German into English because there wasn’t a story line. There were just brilliant dancers and characters with outstanding and nail biting talents. If any of you get the opportunity to go abroad with the school for languages, our class would definitely recommend you to go. It is a great experience to improve your language skills as well as having fun and getting to know your class mates better! Written by Deborah Carson 13CP and Emma Gallon 13FTN

This year the event took place on April 10th. Nearly seventy of our Year 13 students took part, along with 10 representatives from local business who interviewed the students. Some who received special praise from their interviewers this year included David Morrow, Sarah Lightfoot, and Said Lasmaili. As in previous years, all of the interviewers remarked on the high standard of our students and on their confidence and ability to present themselves at interview. Everyone made a special effort to dress up for the experience, as you can see from the photos. Congratulations to all who took part, and thanks to all our interviewers for giving up their time to help out our students. Also, a big thank-you to all the brave students who agreed to be interviewed on video by Mrs Evans! The next Interview Skills Evening will take place in March 2009. Mrs K. Bingham

Young Enterprise

“Generation eXcellent” have now completed the Young Enterprise programme in Year 13. They had a very successful year and their company had a turnover of around £400 at close of trade. During the first two terms, the company marketed and produced laminated pocket timetables for students in the college. They also attended a Trade Fair at the Abbeycentre in February and were awarded a prize for the Problem Solving category. 7 members of the group have also completed the OCR Level 2 qualification in Enterprise. Congratulations to all the students involved for their hard work and enthusiasm this year, and a very big thank-you to Helen Hamill (Northern Bank Corporate Banking) who was our business adviser this year. Queen’s University Open Day

On April 1st the AS Chemistry class visited the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University. The students were able to take part in some “Wet Chemistry” experiments in the undergraduate labs where they extracted lycopene from tomatoes. They also toured the departments and got to see machinery like mass spectrometers and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers in action. Each student was able to speak to a member of staff for careers guidance and advice, and we attended a lecture about the opportunities for Chemistry graduates in Northern Ireland. Queen’s are very keen to recruit students for both Chemistry and Chemical Engineering degrees as there are more jobs available in these fields in Northern Ireland than ever before. Mrs K Bingham

Gaelic Football Gaelic Football practice takes place on a Monday after school at Henry Jones during the Summer term for boys and girls 3.30 – 4.30pm. A year 8/9 Tournament is being hosted by the North Down District on the 25th April at the St. Paul’s Club in Holywood so please make an effort to attend practice if you hope to make the team for this tournament. Any queries please see Mr. Connolly or Mr McGuckin.

On Friday 25th April the Lagan College junior Gaelic team travelled to St. Paul’s Gaelic Club in Holywood to compete in the North Down 7 a Side Championship. The Lagan College Gaelic Club which has been growing in stature over the last few years approached the competition with apprehension with established Gaelic Football schools such as De La Salle, Downpatrick, and St. Colmcilles, Crossgar, competing. However the Lagan College lads played fantastically defeating St.Colmans, Ballynahinch, St. Colmcilles and sharing the spoils with De La Salle. Lagan College and De La Salle being the only undefeated teams then had to play each other in the play-off final. The final, like the league game, was a closely fought affair with De La Salle winning by a narrow 2 point margin. Lagan College took the runners-up spot and definitely gained a lot of respect on the day from opposing teams and staff. Mr. Connolly and Mr. Mc Guckin were extremely proud of the team who represented the school in exemplary fashion throughout the day. Diarmuid Kielty Year 9 in particular stood out as the outstanding player of the tournament. Hopefully next year we can go one better and bring home the championship! Team Diarmuid Kielty, Jack Carlin, Gerard Whyte, Daniel Toal, Pearse Mc Crory, Daniel Mc Reynolds, Conleth O’Grady, Dion Corr, Chris Doyle and Chris Keenan.
