My truck is unstoppable; it can’t be beat I slam the door and strap myself in the seat

I start the engine and press the gas to the floor My truck takes off and my engine lets out a roar

I wouldn’t be able to hunt or fish if it wasn’t for

my truck With it I carry poles, guns, and my fallen buck I pull my boat with my truck in four-wheel-drive

At my destination I always arrive

ISA Safety at the Silhouette Range When using personal clay throwers at the Silhouette range, set up and shoot from the middle to the right side of the Silhouette range. This is for protection from ricochets from the pistol range causing injury. Also note, the pistol range is closed for any scheduled event on the Silhouette range. The first Silhouette Shoot for the year will be held on April 2, 2016

ISA Lucky BB Shoot

ISA Lucky BB will be Sunday April 10 There are 10

shooters per round, each firing one round of 12 or 20

gauge at their own target. The club provided the

rounds to be used with your $2 entry fee. Shoot

starts at 1:00 We also have targets to pattern your

gun if you want from noon till 1 As always club

shoots are open to the public, so invite a

911 Emergency

A couple of hunters were out in the woods

when one of them fell to the ground

clutching his chest. After struggling for a

few seconds, he seemed to stop breathing.

The other guy quickly pulls out his cell

phone and dials 911. He gasps to the

operator, "My friend is dead! What should I

do?" In a soothing voice, the operator

says, "Try to remain calm, sir. I can help

you. First, we need to make sure he's

dead." Immediately the operator heard a

shot. The frantic hunter comes back on the

line and says, "Okay, now what?"

Trap Shoot A Trap shoot will be conducted by Lauren West April 10th after the Lucky BB shoot. Lauren stated that he needs volunteers for the shoot. Contact Lauren (724-244-9053) to help. The club will accommodate shooters with disabilities. Youth shooters must have an adult in charge.

James C. Armbrust, 80, of Irwin died Thursday,

March 3, 2016, at home. He was a lifetime

member of the NRA and Irwin Sportsmen's

Association. Friends and family will be received

Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at WILLIAM

SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 521 Main St.,

Irwin, 724-863-1200, where everyone will gather

at 11 a.m. Monday for a funeral service.

Know Your Bears

We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells

on their clothing so as not to startle bears and to

carry pepper spray in case of an encounter with a

bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh

signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should

recognize the difference between black bear and

grizzly bear poop. Black bear poop is smaller and

contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly

bear poop has little bells in it and smells like

pepper.

Men’s Pistol/Self Defense Course ISA will have a Men’s Pistol/Self Defense

Course starting April 12th at 6:30 PM. The

classes will then be held on the 2nd and 4th

Thursdays of each month, 6:30 PM to dusk,

April through August. Course is open to the

public so invite a friend. Ages 12-17 need

parental signature. Classes will cover safety,

self defense, and include lots of shooting.

Students need to bring firearms, ammo,

hearing and eye protection and the $5.00 fee

for each class. Call Lee Joyce at 724-864-

0094 if you have questions. A favorite Shotgun

Several years ago my parents gifted me a Weatherby Orion 20-gauge. The little over-under shotgun was, to put it bluntly, way out of my league. I realize there are guns out there that carry price tags well beyond the Orion, but to me it was the pinnacle of my gun ownership. In fact, it still is.

At first I didn’t realize I needed it. After all, I have a perfectly functional semi-auto 12-gauge that has served me just fine on everything from doves to turkeys. Back then, however, I was starting to truly devote myself to more bird hunting, having followed a doomed job to Minnesota’s north country.

Nearly every day after work, if I wasn’t trying to fill a deer tag, I was walking behind my golden retriever for grouse. Sometimes I carried the over-under, sometimes not. It wasn’t until I spent some serious time dove hunting in North Dakota that I realized how much I liked that Weatherby.

Today, I carry it more often than not on any hunts where it is even remotely logical. And for bunnies, woodcock, and early season grouse, it’s a no-brainer. Recently, while wrapping up the last days of hunting in Wisconsin, I carried it as well. My grouse year was one for the record books, and while I knew the 12-gauge may have yielded a few more of the birds, I didn’t care. I simply wanted to carry the over-under.

My hunting partner thought I was nuts. He is a carry-more-than-enough gun kind of guy, and couldn’t believe I’d hinder myself with a smaller bore, two-shot. Well, the fates and their ironic sense of humor intervened the last morning when we pulled up to a new parcel of public land. Ben discovered his shotgun was at the cabin.

I made a deal with him to trade with him halfway through the hunt. When we found the birds – six in total – they flushed in all directions from a patch of spruce. I knocked one down, and then quickly picked up another on a re-flush. After that I handed Ben the gun and started walking behind my dog.

After I heard him shoot I could also hear the flapping of wings in the snowpack, so I sent Luna to do her job. When the bird came to hand, Ben’s first comment was simply, “I really like this little gun.” I doubt he is a convert, or that he’ll ever admit I was right, but I could see it in his expression.

They aren’t a necessary part of any hunt, but

that doesn’t mean owning a high-quality

shotgun or rifle is a bad thing. In fact, if you

ever get the pleasure you might realize, as I

have, that it’s something a person could get

used to.

REP. GEORGE DUNBAR will address club members

at our membership meeting on 4/28/16.

Please plan to attend.

I throw my gun in the back of my truck

With it I hope to bag a 12-point buck

While in the woods, BANG! I see the deer

fall

I take him home, freeze the meat, and

mount his horns on my wall

There is nothing like hunting; waiting for

the kill

Cutting and cleaning the meat my freezer

I’ll soon fill

Deer steaks and deer jerky have such a

great taste

And with his head on my wall nothing goes

to waste
