Steve Hansen, General Manager
We all remember our school lessons about the Thanksgiving
tradition. The Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620. The
Pilgrims went ashore and built a town called Plymouth, but they
nearly starved to death because they didn't know how to grow
crops in their new country. The local Indian tribe came to the
rescue, bringing food and friendship; and the Pilgrims and Indians sat down
together for prayer and feasting together.
But did you know Hawaii’s King Kamehameha III chose the uniquely
American holiday of Thanksgiving to be a national holiday of the Hawaiian
Kingdom, fourteen years before President Lincoln proclaimed it a Holiday in
America?
Despite the constant warfare in ancient Hawaii, there was one season of the
year when warfare was absolutely prohibited. The Makahiki season was a
period of four lunar months, running approximately from November through
February. Since warfare was prohibited during Makahiki, there were many
sports competitions accompanied by prizes and feasting. There were surfing
competitions, boxing, and wrestling. There was heavy gambling on the
outcomes of the competitions, with stakes that sometimes included even one's
own bones ("You bet your bones”).
The King had observed that over the years that the missionaries and other
Americans living in Honolulu celebrated an annual Thanksgiving holiday, also
with prayers and feasting. He made inquiries, and learned how the holiday had
gotten started in America and how widely it was celebrated there. But Hawaii
already had a national holiday at the end of November, so the King chose
December 31 to be Thanksgiving. He issued a Royal Proclamation declaring
that December 31, 1849 would be a national holiday of prayer and
thanksgiving. On that day the King and royal court and their families, together
with American residents of Honolulu, and the missionaries, all assembled for
prayers at Kawaiaha'o Church. When the church service ended, there was a
lu'au -- a feast, with dishes cooked in the Mission House across from the
church and also some food brought by the King and
the American residents.
I am all in favor of re-establishing a Makahiki
Season that covers both physical and verbal warfare!
This year when someone wishes you Happy
Thanksgiving wish them a Happy Makahiki back!
With Aloha,

4th Annual
Diabetes Day
Veteran’s Day
Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November
11, that honors military veterans; that is, persons who served in the United States Armed
Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance
Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I;
major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of
the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously
observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. Veterans Day is not to be
confused with Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S.
military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service.
Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions invite you to join our
residents to Picnic for Poki at 11:00 AM at the Historic Kaahumanu
Church in Wailuku Town, 103 South High Street on Thursday,

entertainment will be Kaleo Phillips.

Kaleo has been blessed to flourish in music playing professionally
with a variety of Hawaiian music artists and touring with bands across the globe. In 2004, Kaleo, along with
Josh Kahula and Pi‘ilani Arias, formed the trio Pono and released a debut album, Home of Mine, which was
received with rave reviews.
Bring your lunch with you and enjoy coffee and fresh baked cookies from Roselani Place. Relax under the
monkey pod tree for an hour or so at this free event, which is open to the public.
Picnic for Poki is held every third Thursday on the month to continue bringing the spirit of aloha and
Hawaiian music to the Maui community in honor of the late Allen "Braddah Poki" Pokipala. Braddah Poki
was dedicated to sharing Hawaiian music throughout various venues in Hawaii.
