Brass Monkey Weekend! Friday, 7 to Sunday, 9 July
at the Riviera Hotel
Being relatively new to the club, we had heard all kinds of weird and
wonderful stories about the Brass, so Krog and I were quite excited to join in the fun. Friday arrived as a sunny winter's day, but as there were rumours of rain showers on Sunday, we decided to play chicken and opted for 4-wheels. On arrival at the Riviera Hotel in Velddrif we settled into chalet 3 and then
joined the others on the hotel balcony. As more arrived and helped themselves to some liquid refreshments things became rather noisy. At 19h30 it was time for supper and I must say the spread of seafood starters were something out of a glossy cookbook, followed by a equally good main course and some yummy cake as dessert to finish off the meal. The local DJ, Devon, started off things with some
real biker music and soon the dance floor was buzzing with some normal, some unusual and some, what I would call, quirky and amazing moves. Krog and I decided to leave the party fairly early but I believe the last people packed it up in the wee hours of the morning. Saturday morning arrived rather cold with a misty cloud hovering over the water. More food was waiting and it was amusing to watch some faces as people dribbled into the breakfast room.
No bright eyes and bushy tails for those party animals this morning.
Jean was kind enough to send me a write up for the 2017 Brass Monkey but before I hand you over to Jean’s take on the event I feel I must thank certain people for helping me to make it a great weekend for everyone! Firstly to the Club for sponsoring the bus hire, DJ and the Obee’s To Devin for compiling a playlist of great tunes, (our Club’s favourites), for the DJ to play, to Rodney for handling all the finances, to Peter and Jacqui for yet another great Quiz evening. To Edwin the bus driver for the ‘tour of Langebaan’, to Martin for the entertainment on the bus! To the sponsors of the prizes, (thank you letters have been sent,) to the Pternoster Hotel for lunch. Lastly and especially, to the Rivera Hotel, to Rick and the staff for looking after us so very well. To all that attended it really was a great weekend from start to finish, hope you all enjoyed it as much as Rob and I did. Here’s to the next one!!! A… Now over to Jean

Next on the itinerary was a scenic coach ride through Langebaan and Saldanha ending up at the Paternoster Hotel for lunch. The ride went off well with lots of Obees and song. Not so sure about the naughty kids at the back, but Martin definitely kept us en-tertained at the front of the bus. Then there was the young lad Josh who opted to water a tree on the main drag through Saldanha, answering a call of nature. Eish. When you've got
to go, you've got to go. On return to the hotel we just had a short while relaxing before it was time for wine tasting. Didn't count the bottles but there were more than enough, with not a drop going to waste. Supper again was another scrumptious affair with plenty of good food and some sticky toffee pudding, custard, ice
cream, cherries and cream to end off the meal. Then it was quiz time. We were divided into 5 teams and Jackie and Peter took real advantage of our general knowledge or lack of. This was a truly delightful affair with much laughter and fun. And Jackie, you asked for suggestions for next year. Here is mine: Please ask questions that I know the answers off. Entertainer of the evening: our own energizer bunny, no other than Martin. Krog and I retired to watch Race 1 of the super-bikes at Laguna Seca but I believe a few stayed behind to carry on the party. The manager was still smiling the next morning so there could not have been too much mischief. Sunday morning most people were ready for breakfast early and tried to get all the last heart-
to-hearts in before departing their separate ways home. We arrived home just after 11am after driving in the rain from Velddrif to Goodwood. Our sympathies with those on 2-wheels, real possibility you guys arrived home less than dry. See next page……...

A huge thank you to the hotel and staff for having us and to Anne for organizing a fantastic weekend. We enjoyed spending some quality time with you guys - a weekend of letting the hair down exceeding all expectations. This article could have been much longer, but that would have been telling, wouldn't it. As the saying goes: what happens at the Brass, stays at the Brass. That's it for now….. Keep it on two wheels and safe on the road. Till next time. Jean
