November 7, 2006 If you have not given the Dock Master your boat registration and insurance or submitted your compliance forms you could loose your slip. A slip is a privilege and it is at the Board’s discretion whether to allow renewal of a slip lease. The Board will be sending out slip lease renewals for 2007. The Board will be reviewing all the leases that are submitted. The Board approved signing a new contract with Golden Rule Pest Con-trol. We have received the results from the soil test from the railway we will have to dispose of one of the piles as hazardous waste and the other as industrial waste. We are getting bids for disposal of the soil from a li-censed and accredited companies. The wash pad print will have to be changed again slightly at the request of the EPC. We also had to do a test on 5 section of the railway area one of the samples is question-able. We may need to remove more soil for disposal. Autumn D Fels Secretary TSS

Cruiser’s Calling Lighthouse article for November

By Len Berkstresser

A group from TSS including Mickey/Angus Regar, Leah/Ed Peters, Rick Linton, Drew Barrett/Lauren Merritt and Len Berkstresser ac-companied a fleet of 10 boats from Davis Island Yacht Club on their Longboat Key Cruise. We had a good and were able to make some new cruising friends. They are a wonderful group with whom to go cruising. I have posted some pictures of the weekend on the Web-site. DIYC is looking forward to our next joint cruise on February 3rd to downtown to attend the Tampa Bay Lightning Game. This cruise will be hosted by Bob Sardo. He has a great time planned so stay tuned for details. November is shaping up to be a very busy month. There are several cruises planned. Bill and Elaine Cullen will be cruising Tri-umph for a week that will put them back in St. Pete on Saturday, No-vember 5th. This is just in time for the Strictly Sail Show which takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 4th, 5th and 6th. Sev-eral TSS boats plan to attend the show, raft-up in the Vinoy Basin Saturday evening and meet Bill and Elaine for word on their trip. The following weekend is Rib-Fest in St. Pete. There is a big rib cook-off, lots of live music by big-name bands, an arts and crafts festival and generally a great time. Several boats are planning to sail over to the Vinoy Basin on Saturday morning to enjoy the fes-tivities. If you’d like to go, please sign-up on the board. The annual trip to Desoto Point at Thanksgiving will occur again this year and be hosted by Paul Slater. A lot of information is already posted at the club for those of you interested in attending. This is a great time, judging from those who have attended in the past. With the change in the weather, cooler days and nights are upon us. It is a great time to take a trip on your boat. Give the ol’girl some exercise and release the dock lines. See you on the wa-ter, Len

Christmas in the Park Cruise December 1-2-3

Ken and Jan Boucher aboard “Keeja”, and Elaine and Bill Cullen aboard “Triumph” will be the hosts for this annual cruise. It was a lot of fun last year. Starting Friday night there is lots to downtown St Pete, including a free concert. Early Saturday there’s a “Morning Market” that’s just grand, and then at 10AM there is a Christmas Pa-rade that’s a hoot. At Noon, we plan to go watch the “Kids & Kubs”, 75 (yrs old) and over softball game for a little inspiration. Then we’ll have cocktails on the South beach of the Vinoy Basin un-der the palms mid afternoon. Then there’s caroling, and a snowball fight in the park. See the list of all the activities including the Or-chestra, the Tai Chi, the walking tours, and all the other stuff avail-able to you this weekend. More info on the cruising board in the clubhouse. (2 pages worth!) For questions call Bill at 988-1130 or Ken at 571-3404

Sunfishing (TSS Sunfish Fleet)

The TSS Sunfish fleet continues to make progress. There have been some Tuesday night races, and it would be fun for someone to report results. Three boats have now been repainted (one for the second time), with six sailable hulls. There are five usable rigs and five usable rudders. Again, many thanks to all who have helped get the boats back in shape, particu-larly all the folks whom I’ve Tom Sawyered into helping during the work parties. Also, thanks to Bob Varney who is now in the process of making racks for the rudders and daggerboards. Thanks also to Bruce at West Ma-rine in Apollo Beach who has been very supportive in getting us the TSS discount The new racks make it much easier to store the boats, but I do ask you take care in not dragging the hulls across the beach on the rocks or near the racks. This creates much extra work in repairing and repainting the gouges and slows down the project. I appreciate those who have been using the sign-out sheets and noting problems that need to be addressed. I’m work-ing those problems as I can get to them. The clipboard with the Sunfish sign-up sheet has now been moved into the shed next to the rigs. The rule sheet is posted just below the sign up sheet. Also, when you return the boats to the rack, please make sure the boat is resting on the rubrail, not on the chine, as that has resulted in fiberglass damage to at least one boat. Also, when they are tipped that way, the cockpit faces the ground and doesn’t fill with water. The boats, rigs, rudders, and daggerboards are still in the process of being numbered. Hopefully this will make it easier to identify items that need work, and also for consistency in putting the same boat together for racing. The rigs on the lower rack in the shed are the complete ready-to-sail rigs, along with the masts. We can still use any spare gear that you may not need, such as small blocks, line (1/4”, 5/16”), cleats, etc. Finally, it would be great to see more people using the TSS Sunfish fleet. That is, after all, why we’re fixing them up. There’s not much better pure sailing than on a Sunfish. See you out sailing. Geoff Lockwood

Women’s Sailing

THE MOVIE CORNER By Marc Sexton

Ahoy! Here we are, it’s the month of November and another review is at hand. So many great movies are available to review, but only one for this month could make the cut. Ahrrrr…., it seemed only natural to stick with a pirate theme after

last month. The title for this issue is “Cutthroat Island”. Well, me hearty’s, the films synopsis say’s, “Geena Davis (Thelma & Louise, Beetle Juice) and Matthew Modine (Married to the Mob, Full Metal Jacket) deliver a tidal wave of nonstop action and adven-ture in the swashbuckling saga of ruthless pirates, buried treasure and blood-thirsty betrayal.” So, I say’s, it’s truly a pitiful smidge of a synopsis, barely touching the waterline of the movie. Cutthroat Island critically, was not well received, but me thinks there’s not a sailor among them. Nor pirate neither. The director is Benny Harlin (Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger). Aye, so we can be expecting “nonstop action” and that there’s plenty. The story however, has as many holes as a 30year old sail. Three brothers and a daughter, Lady Pirate Morgan Adams (Geena Davis), start the beginning of the story. Each brother has a portion of a treasure map. Frank Langella is the evil brother and Captain of the Reaper. The killing and mayhem is on. Morgan is quite the pirate. The plausibility of her actions not with standing, are easily kept to the dark side of the eye patch. Have I told you enough, maybe not quite? The cinematography in this movie is out-standing. Shot on location in Malta and in Thailand with real ships. It will take you back to a time when there was a reason men became pirates. This movie was originally released in 1995. I bought it at Best Buy on line for $9.44. I’m sure it is available at most rental places. This may not be the best price so shop around.

Despite the brutishly basic story, lacking believability, I still enjoyed this movie! There is quite a bit of violence and some strong language, but still a family film. This movie is an action packed keeper! Single Reef (SF) Now, we’re seeing something worth watching. Cutthroat Island is a little rough around the edges, but a solid ride with plenty of entertain-ment value. This is a movie you’ll want to see multiple times and parts will be memorable.

My rating is:

Single Reef (SF) Now, we’re seeing something worth watching. Cutthroat Island is a little rough around the edges, but a solid ride with plenty of entertainment value. This is a movie you’ll want to see multiple times and parts will be memorable.
