National Champion Diane Rothenbergfinishing her winning 100 Free in 1:05.34!

This past May there were 21 of us from O*H*I*O Masters who went to Spring Nationals in Indianapolisforming a team from age 25 to 96. No, that isn’t a typo. Along with his two sons, 96 year old Russ Wittemade a significant point contribution to our 7th place finish combined team – local clubs category. Whatan inspiration to watch him swim the 200 Back, in which he lowered the national record by 4 minutes.Wow!

It was such an experience to watch swimmers who were competing in their first big meet talk withJason Lezak (remember the fastest 100 free anchor in the gold medal 400 medley relay at the Olympics?)and then watch him swim an exhibition relay.

One of the fun online tools was watching the meet live and seeing the real time results. I even got acongrats on my phone after a swim from Mel Smith and she was at home. Also, I could go online afterand watch my swim.

Between meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends and socializing at the Indians game (theminor league team in Indy), I almost forgot that I did go there to swim. Actually, I swam some of my besttimes in 5 to 10 years, so that was a very successful meet for me.

Consider joining some of us at one of these big meets. It’s more than just a swim.

Report on the Pan American GamesTom Spence with photos by John Medici

The first Pan American Game competition was in 1989. 2013 was the firstyear the Pan American Games have been held in the United States.Synchronized swimming, pool swimming and open water swimming werecontested in Sarasota, Florida from June 1st thru June 13th of this year. Thepool was an outdoor 50 meter pool with 8 lanes. Viewing stands werecovered to provide shade for spectators and swimmers. It is a beautifulfacility and is used year around.

Although most swimmers were from North, South and Central America, there were some European swimmers as well swimmers from Russia. 1552athletes from 25 FINA Federations, representing 261 swim clubs, competed.

You will be pleased to know that one of the swim clubs was O*H*I*OMasters Swim Club. OMSC was represented by four swimmers including

John Medici, Diane Rothenberg, Flavia Zappa andyours truly. Fortunately, two men plus two womenequals two relays. We swam in mixed 200 meter 240+relays both medley and freestyle. We took 10th placein both. In the individual events, John, Diane andFlavia did quite well. I did less well. Oh, well!

Diane and I arrived several days ahead of the eventand were able to swim a few workouts with theSarasota Sharks. Also joining the workouts wereswimmers from the Czech Republic. The Czechswimmers who spoke English would explain the

workout set to those who did not speakEnglish. The coaches would wait untileveryone understood the workout beforestarting us off.

Before an event, I was in the waiting areaawaiting my next event. A fellow started aconversation me. He asked if I knew whereEcuador was. I was thinking that the US hasn’t

Page 12: Inside This Issue Water Log - O*H*I*O Masters200 Back 2:57.83 8 100 IM 1:28.16 8 100 Back 1:21.70 5 200 IM 3:10.16 8 Douglass, Nick M63 50 Breast 36.26 12 100 Breast 1:20.24 12 100

yet invaded Ecuador so I did not actually know where it was. But I toldhim of course I knew where Ecuador was. He wanted to know where Iwas from. I told him I was from Ohio. He had never heard of Ohio. Hewanted to know when the rainy season was in Ohio. I told him therewas no rainy season. Snowy season, yes. But no rainy season. He rolledhis eyes. Then I got called to swim.

A fellow from Sarasota asked me when the outdoor swim season was inOhio. I told him June, July and August. He laughed. He thought I wasbeing funny. I beat him in the 800 meters. Who’s laughing now, buddy.

The open water course was a perfect triangle. 100 meters betweendirectional buoys. It was a beautiful layout. Unfortunately there was a50 meter run up the beach to the finish line. Did I mention that thisbody does not run? I got a medal and a tan line. It’s all fun.

In two years, the Pan American Games will be in Colombia. Colombia is right next door to Ecuador. I checked. NowI know.
