The Marshall ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name the track at Marshall
High School’s Maverick Stadium in honor of former coach Emma Bennett, who
recently passed away this summer.
The action was taken on Monday during the regular September board meeting
held in the Pat Smith-Gasperson Board Room.
Coach Bennett, who held various positions in MISD including teacher, coach and
assistant principal, led the Lady Mavs track program to 10 straight district champion-
ships during the 1980’s and 1990’s, which marks the longest run of district champion-
ships in the history of any Marshall ISD athletic program.
Following her time at MISD as a teacher and coach, Bennett made history as
the first woman to serve as a Harrison County Commissioner when she assumed the
unfinished term of her husband, Charles, who passed away in 2001. She served in this
capacity for 13 years, until retiring in 2014.
The Emma Bennett Track at Maverick Stadium will be officially dedicated in the
spring, with the likely date to be in conjunction with the annual Maverick Relays in
February although an exact date has yet to be decided.
Other actions of note from Monday’s board meeting included:
• Dr. Jerry Gibson, MISD Superintendent, opened the meeting by recognizing
several MISD students for accomplishments this month. William B. Travis first-grade
student, Lexie Benson, led the meeting with pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags. MHS
cheerleaders Jameica Hurd, Claire Rizzo, Kaeleigh Clark and Camryn Williams were
recognized for their All-American designations this past summer. MHS seniors Abigail
Herman and Austin Loveless were recognized for being named the Optimist Club
Young Texanne and Young Texan of the Month.

Our Legacy 2017 Building Program in Marshall ISD is moving forward, and
we have been looking back at various people, programs and events that
have helped shaped MISD over the years in our “Red Brick Wall: Building A
Legacy” series as we prepare to move into our new schools in 2017.
Each week in the Maverick Insider, we will feature an entry from our
“Red Brick Wall: Building A Legacy” blog located at www.marshalllegacy.
blogspot.com. The blog updates with a new article every Tuesday and Fri-
day during the week, so check it out if you have not already done so and
look back with us over some interesting moments and accomplishments in
the history of our schools and our students.
Today’s entry: The Marshall High School Student Council has enjoyed
a long history of success and leadership among the student body at
MHS. This article highlights the MHS Student Council’s award-winning
achievements at the Texas Association of Student Councils conference
during the 1985-86 school year. It appeared in the May 22, 1986 edition of
the Marshall News Messenger.
For the sixth straight year,
Marshall High School was
recognized as Outstanding Se-
nior High Student Council at the
recent 50th annual conference of
the Texas Association of Student
Councils in Austin.
The MHS Student Council
was one of 350 student councils
to that attended.
The MHS Student Council received five
major awards during the state conference in
recognition of their many projects during the
school year. The local student council won the
Outstanding Safety School for the fifth straight
year. Safety chairman this year was senior Amy
Huffman.
For the sixth straight year, the MHS council
won Outstanding SMILE (alcohol education)
project. SMILE chairman for 1985-86 is Greg
Schwartz.

RIGHT NOWHelp Marshall High School defend its title in the “Brookshire’s Extra Point” contest and win another $10,000 for our students. IT’S REALLY EASY! From now until Nov. 1, please TEXT
“MAVS” to 43101 once a day. Encourage all your friends and family to participate! Let’s earn more $$$ for our students at MHS!
Energy School. Marshall has won the award
since the competition was first created.
Martheil Mauthe was this year’s energy
chairman. During the conference, Marshall’s
scrapbook was judged along with more than
100 scrapbooks in the 5A competition catego-
ry. Marshall was one of six schools to win the
top award as a superior scrapbook. Historian
Merja Kenola was in charge of the scrapbook.
As a result of winning in the safety
competition, Melissa Whitis, 1986-87 safety
chairman, will join the official Texas delega-
tion as it travels to Longbeach, Miss., in June
to attend the annual National Student Safety
Program Conference. Martheil Mauthe, this
year’s energy chairman, will represent Texas
in June at the annual National Energy Educa-
tion Day Awards Ceremony. Both projects are
now eligible to win national prizes.
The MHS SMILE project is also entering
national competition this year. After receiving
encouragement from many Marshall people,
the student council has entered the project
in the Reader’s Digest competition which is
offering scholarships to schools sponsoring
outstanding alcohol programs.
Some 3,500 student council leaders and
sponsors attended the two-day conference.
Delegates from Marshall included president
William Sperier Jr., parliamentarian Greg
Schwartz, juniors Martheil Mauthe and Emily
Smith, sophomores Susan Blackburn and
Annette Williams, and president-elect Steph-
anie McGee. Student council sponsor Anne
Newman also attended the meeting.
Throughout the conference, Marshall
delegates helped to run a booth that offered
project information to the delegates.
A highlight of the conference was the
election of officers for the 1986-87 school
year. Sperier nominated Medina Valley High
School of San Antonio to serve as TASC vice
president school. Humble High School was
elected to serve as president; Teague City
High School as secretary and Lewisville high
School as parliamentarian.
With a theme of “TASC Golden Encoun-
ters: Past, Present and Future,” the conference
program presented workshop sessions on
leadership skills, effective student council
projects, and student activity program devel-
opment. The program included a presentation
made by Sperier, whose session highlighted
the Texas Sesquicentennial projects spon-
sored the past year at Marshall High School.
Keynoting the final general session was
Jim Wacker, head football coach at Texas
Christian University. In his speech, Wacker
talked about “Striving for Excellence.” Wacker
said success is not meaningful unless it is
accomplished through truth and integrity.
The Texas Association of Student Coun-
cils includes more than 1,100 Texas high
school and junior high school student coun-
cils.

eye on the BallMarshall High School CTE students Jahnisi Cal-
deron, Keicy Carlisle, Delaney Smith, Kat Weese,
and Nancy Zambrano, under the direction of Ms.
Robinson, were selected to be on the team that
run the cameras for the scoreboard at our home
varsity games. We currently have two cameras
up in the press box and one on the ground and
these students are very busy handling each of
these. They are enrolled in our new Audio/Video
Production class and are having a wonderful time
learning how to set-up and run our new cameras
as well as learning how to get those quality shots
for our fans.

Can yoU Spell “exCitement?”MISD once again participated in the annual Harrison County Literacy Council Spelling Bee last week, and put up a fantastic show-
ing. The Administrative team of Jerry Hancock, Allison Killingsworth and Hutcherson Hill advanced deep into the competition, and
for the third year in a row MHS entered a fantastic student team, with Criston Cade, Anna Garbs and Abigail Herman representing
the Mavs. Overall, MISD did bring home the all-important Spirit Stick, thanks to the support of Mr. Densmore and a Big Red Pride
Band ensemble, as well as MHS cheerleaders and district supporters. Thanks to all who participated for such a great cause!

MISD STAFF MEMBER
OF THE WEEKJasmine Johnson | Marshall Junior high school
This week’s Patterson MISD Staff Member of
the week is Jasmine Johnson, an 8th grade
ELA teacher and Student Council sponsor
at Marshall Junior High School. When asked
what made Mrs. Johnson so special, Mr.
Jason Black , principal at MJHS shared that
she is always willing to do anything asked
of her and she always goes above and
beyond all while never expecting a thing in
return. He told us that she spent her part of
summer break sprucing up around MJHS
including a top to bottom cleaning of all
trophy cases as well as doing some much
needed painting at the school. As part of
a student council fundraiser, Mrs. Johnson
and student council members sold parking
spots and spent the past two weekends
personalizing each space with a Maverick
head and MJHS staff member name. In
addition, all lines in the staff parking lot
were repainted. Photographed with Mrs.
Johnson and her students are, Diane Hicks,
principal’s secretary at MJHS, Jason Black,
Principal, Kristin Skinner and Chris Neff
of Patterson Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.
Congratulations to Mrs. Johnson on being
honored and thank you for your outstand-
ing work with the students of MJHS!
