Counsellor’s Corner

Of course I want to!When a leper said to Jesus, “if you want to, you can cure me.” (Matthew 8:1-4) Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said, “Of course I want to! Be cured!” Of course Jesus wants to heal you and I and we know that He can. But the real issue is, do you and I want to be healed? We have become so used to being self-centred, that we are not sure we want to face the challenge of change. Nobody seems to mind too much, because everyone seems to be just as selfish as you and I are and we have agreed, in an unwritten, unspoken social contract, to mind our own business without caring too much for anyone else. We have become comfortable in our sinfulness and complacent about God’s mercy. We seem not to care any more whether we do right or wrong. What a miserable existence we leave ourselves in. Like the leper we need to ask to be cured, to repent, to change and to walk in God’s ways. We ourselves must desire to repent and make the changes in our lives. If we are serious in this we will start today and start with the things we need to change at home.

Br Michael FlahertyCounsellor

Farewell BBQThe Water Sports Auxiliary will be hosting a farewell BBQ for Ron Mobbs (Water Sports Director).

I thought that for my first newsletter article I would simply introduce myself. I am a South Australian who joined the Christian Brothers straight from school in the late 1960s. After training in Victoria, I taught in WA for a year before spending eight years here at CBC. During my time here I taught Year 8, then Year 10, and finally some classes in Year 12. I coached football, cricket and athletics teams and also completed my Bachelor of Arts at Adelaide University. During the 1980s I spent time in WA as a school deputy and eventually as a principal.

Upon returning to SA I have variously served as a Deputy in different roles at Rostrevor College. A wonderful time in my life was spending time living in Boston in the USA while completing a Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Ministry. This has led to me in recent times working in

the areas of Spirituality at Rostrevor. I am delighted to be back at CBC to spend a term as Deputy. In my spare time I enjoy reading and following the Adelaide Crows. I am passionate about education and its ability to raise people to do great things in life. I hope that I will get the chance to meet many of you throughout the term.

60th Anniversary of the Ordination of Monsignor Robert AikenThere will be a mass this Sunday 22 July celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the ordination on Monsignor Robert Aitken. Monsignor Aitken is currently our Junior Campus Chaplain but has been associated with CBC since the late 1950s. Monsignor Aitken has been a great supporter of the college and the Christian Brothers over these years. His celebration mass will occur at St Francis Xavier Cathedral at 2.30pm. All members of the College community are welcomed to attend.

Congratulations We congratulate the following members of our College community:

• Mrs Jane Thompson and Paul her husband on the arrival of their beautiful baby girl, Evie Ophelia Ann during the holidays.

• Siddarth Rajagopal has been selected as a student compere for the 2012 Catholic Schools Music Festival.

• Fabio Migliaccio who has been selected to represent the Secondary School Sport SA at the forthcoming School Sport Australia Soccer Championships. These championships will be held in Townsville, QLD from 4 August to 10 August 2012.

ConclusionDuring the holidays I had an opportunity to spend some time with my family at Robe, in the South East of the state. One of the highlights of the time there was spending some time with my youngest son fishing at the jetty. Even though we didn’t manage to catch that elusive fish, the act of fishing provided time for stillness and reflection, to enjoy the serenity of the landscape and to rest the inner soul. We are reminded that we all need in our life time to be still and breathe and to focus on our inner peace. My prayer for our College community is that we all have time to stop and connect with God, pausing in the midst of our busy day to find stillness within ourselves and appreciate the blessing of everyday within our school.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Psalm 46:10-11

Please keep in our prayers and thoughts Brother Cliff Fogarty cfc who died as a result of a tragic accident last week.

Book of the Year Short List 2012Welcome back to another busy term with our Book Week celebrations only 6 weeks away! In line with Book Week, The

Children’s Book Council of Australia will announce the Book of the Year Awards, which have developed an excellent reputation over 60 years for being highly regarded in the world of literary awards in Australia and overseas. The awards aim to embrace all that is best in Australian children’s book publishing by bringing books and children together with a forward-looking approach - ‘Engaging the community with literature for young Australians’.

Until the awards are announced in a few weeks, all short-listed categories and books can be viewed on The Children’s Book Council of Australia website, with most books available for borrowing from one of the College libraries. There is an excellent selection of books on the short list in a variety of genres, so readers can be assured of a quality read. The website can be accessed by following this link

http://cbca.org.au/shortlist_2012.htm

Lastly, there is still time for all students participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge to complete reading, with the final day for reading record sheets to be handed to teachers, Friday 7 September.

Happy reading everyone!

Schools are organic institutions physically growing in response to the changing needs of students. In a school as old as CBC there have been many developments over the years as land has been purchased and buildings erected or renovated. The first major renovation in the college’s history came about in 1892 when a second story was added to the original 1878 classroom block fronting what was then known as Ackland Street. This renovation caused much consternation between Br Treacy the head of the Australian province and Br Gilbert Hughes the principal of Wakefield Street.

When Br Hughes arrived in Adelaide in 1891 he set about purchasing a parcel of land east of the original site where the Finance office and the Hurley building currently stand. He paid £600 which was considered very expensive for the land. He also engaged a new architect to construct the second story on the classroom block rather than Ernest Bayer the original architect. These two decisions angered Br Treacy in Sydney. He felt that Br Hughes should have consulted him before making significant decisions and he particularly saw no reason to engage a second architect when the original plans for the classroom block had been drawn up so that a second story could easily be added. Br Hughes on the other hand felt that he was in charge in Adelaide and should be free to make the decision. The heated correspondence between the two men is preserved in the province archives.

In time the ongoing argument between the two fizzled out and the second story addition did go ahead. It was formally opened on 15 July 1892. Br Treacy, however, may well have been right in wishing the College had engaged its original architect Ernest Bayer. Less than three years after the addition of the second story, the foundations of the building subsided and required very expensive underpinning.

Book WeekThis term we will celebrate Book Week, a great opportunity to focus on Australian authors and illustrators. We will embrace the opportunity in this, the National Year of Reading. I look forward to sharing with you some of the activities planned for your boys at school and opportunities for you to become involved.

Book Week runs from Saturday the 18th until Friday the 24th of August. This year’s theme is Champions Read.

Stay tuned for more information to ensure our boys are ‘Champions’ who ‘Read.’

Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) UpdateWell done to those students who have completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge. The challenge is coming to a close so all students need to ensure that they have completed it. The Reception and Year 1 classes are doing this in class with teacher support.

All students need to finish the Premier’s Reading Challenge by the end of Week 7.

My expectation is that all students complete the challenge. I am more than happy to help individuals as required. I have discussed with classes some strategies in using the library effectively to assist them as well as highlighted some great literature. Please ask your son to see me if they need help. I have also requested teachers to include reading for the PRC into the boys’ set homework.

Congratulations to the following students for successfully completing the challenge:

St Vincent de Paul DonationsA big thank you to all those families who have been so generous with their donations of clothing, blankets and cans of non-perishable food. As you can see from this photo, the box is bulging at the seams and there are around four to five hundred cans of food.

St Vincent de Paul will be coming in to make their weekly collection tomorrow, then next Tuesday is the final one. Please continue to be generous, as the winter is far from over and the homeless are still desperately in need of our support.

Through your generosity, we have, and will continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of people who simply need our love and care.

Let’s make this final week of the 2012 CBC Winter Appeal a great one.

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you are well and had an enjoyable break with your family. It is hard to believe that my Long Service Leave has come to an end. My husband, Peter, and I enjoyed our travels through Europe and whilst it was wonderful and has given us many precious moments, it is always great to come home to family and friends. A special moment was spending time with the Christian Brothers in Rome. Brother Greg, Brother Kevin and Brother Vianney opened their hearts and homes and warmly welcomed us to share a meal with them. The brothers were sent to Rome whilst still in their 20s and now have spent nearly 50 years in Rome; they are still so full of passion in doing God’s work in the Edmund Rice tradition. I was particularly impressed that the brothers were so informed about our very own CBC, Wakefield Street, and Brother Vianney recounted how the very land our Senior Campus was built on was bought by Brother Ambrose. The brothers were delighted to see the DVD of our new JC buildings stating “how lucky are the staff and students to be in such an innovative learning environment”.

To that end I am very proud to inform you that our Junior Campus Building won the very prestigious IAI “People’s Choice Award”. This is testament to the Architect, Mr Kon Michael, and his team in designing our innovative building, which inspires and will continue to inspire our students and staff in their teaching and learning.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Mrs Caroline Clarke who led the Junior Campus students and staff in Term 2. Mrs Clarke worked tirelessly in my absence and has left her thumbprint on everyone.

At the beginning of the week we welcomed to our new CBC community our new Reception students and their families. We hope their time with us will always be enriching, rewarding and joyful. Teaching our new Reception class is Mrs Annemarie Proctor who is an accomplished and experienced Teacher. Please join me and all of our staff in welcoming Annemarie to the Junior Campus.

We also welcome the following students and their families to our CBC Community.

Dylan Riddell in 2PNicholas Kellerman-Clarke in 3PWillem Behrendt in 1P

StaffingLate Last week, Mr Peter Wallace informed the College he had been successful in gaining a position at the Catholic Education Office as a consultant. Mr Wallace has given 8 years of service to the CBC JC and we wish him every success as he embarks on this exciting new journey.

Mr Wallace is replaced by Mrs Duddy, who taught the class in Term 2 and will be the class teacher for the remainder of the year. We are very grateful to Mrs Duddy for accepting this position at very short notice. Mrs

Duddy worked tirelessly in Term 2 to establish structures and routines and brings a wealth of educational expertise and knowledge to the College.

This term we also welcome three undergraduates from Flinders University -- Kristy Ryles, Lucinda Wilson and Kerryn Giurastante. They will complete a four week placement with Miss Odgers in Reception, Mrs Madigan in Year 1, and Mrs Ozgo in Year 2.

Mrs Sharon Moten, mother of William and Alexander, has been appointed as an Education Support Officer. She comes to us with an impressive Resume having trained as a teacher, served in the Military and as an official at Government House. Mrs Moten will be predominantly working in the new Reception class assisting the class teacher, as well as administrating the Multi Lit Programme.

Over the holidays significant work was done and minor adjustments were undertaken in the Junior Campus. I would like to sincerely thank Mr Graham Brink, Mr David Beinke, Mr Dion Borillo and Mr Michael Williams for their tireless efforts.

Please keep in your prayers Ms Daniele Guidolin who has travelled to NSW this week to attend her Uncle’s funeral. Our love, prayers and thoughts are with Danielle and her family throughout this sad time.

Vacation CareDuring the holidays, our dynamic Vacation care team, led by Mrs Riandi Van Dyk (Ben, Kurt, Andrew, Peta, Ryan, Anne Marie and Gai) supervised and entertained many students from CBC as well as from other schools. Their care, thoughtfulness and positivity are infectious and truly made the holidays very enjoyable especially with the many incursions and excursions that were organised.

ReportsLast Term our Junior Campus Teaching staff spent many hours writing reports and due to system failures we were unable to send them home on the last day of Term 2 as promised. We humbly apologise for the inconvenience. Yesterday all students from Reception to Year 6 received their reports. At CBC Junior Campus we view assessment and reporting opportunities as a way of celebrating the achievement and application of our students as well as identifying challenges and offer ways for advancement.

I encourage both parents and students to read the report carefully. Your will have an opportunity to meet and discuss and queries, concerns you may have about your sons learning next Wednesday 25 July at our Parent/Teacher Interview night. Acting on your feedback we have reverted back to conducting the interview in your son’s classroom.

If you have not already done so please complete the reply slip that was sent home on Monday 16 July. Additionally, specialist teachers in Music, PE, Drama and Italian will be available should you request an interview.

Finally, congratulations to our very own Kian Bird who has been selected to represent SAPSASA at the forthcoming Sports Australia Track and Field event in November. I am sure you will wish him well.

Dear Families and Friends

When Jesus sends the disciples out to preach the good news, to heal the sick and bring peace and freedom to tormented souls, we can be excused for thinking that this group are far from ready for such a challenge. True, they had seen the compassion and power with which Jesus worked; they had heard him speak, they had grown in love and companionship, but there was a lot that they ‘just didn’t get’... and any sort of failure had them bewildered. Yet, Jesus says, ‘Go’ -- be unencumbered ...no dallying or packing bags with things that are not necessary and which will become burdensome. They are to take only the one tunic...for they have been clothed in Christ.

We, too, are called to travel lightly, to be clothed in Christ so that our lives, and our every day encounters spread ‘good news’.

Have you ever been jealous of God’s generosity? You bet! And ultimately that sense of injustice, of envy that someone else caught a break is a huge stumbling block to our happiness. Why? Because something in us reacts negatively when it seems that life is not making others pay the same dues we are paying. In the gospels we see an incident where Jesus goes to the synagogue on a Sabbath, stands up to read, and quotes a text from Isaiah – except he doesn’t quote it fully but omits a part. The text (Isaiah 61, 1-2) would have been well-known to the listeners and it describes Isaiah’s version of what will be the sign that God has finally broken into the world and irrevocably changed things. And what will that be? For Isaiah, the sign that God is now ruling the earth will be good news for the poor, consolation for the broken-hearted, freedom for the enslaved, grace abundant for everyone, and vengeance on the wicked. Notice though, when Jesus quotes this, he leaves out the part about vengeance. Unlike Isaiah, he doesn’t say that part of our joy will be seeing the wicked punished.

In heaven we will be given what we’re owed and more (unmerited gift, forgiveness we don’t deserve, joy beyond imagining) but, it seems, we will not be given that catharsis we so much want here on earth, the joy of seeing the wicked punished.

Gospel Challenge – Reaching Out To Others

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for their journey but a walking stick...

The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Mark 6:7-13

Note that Jesus directed the twelve to travel light so as to focus on the task he had given them and not be distracted by all kinds of clutter. The message they carried and their own goodness and integrity would speak for themselves. That, of course, is another lesson for us: being true to ourselves and acting with openness, honesty and integrity will always win out over status, power and cultivated eloquence. The Gospel, the good news of Jesus does not need any dressing up. It is best proclaimed through decent living, respect for all and selfless caring. The love of God has touched our lives through the care of parents, the understanding and encouragement of teachers and the kindness of friends and strangers. We are reminded today that, as followers of Jesus who reflected God’s love better than anyone else, we have a responsibility to bring God’s love to others by the ways in which we reach out and relate to them.

As we commence the business of Semester 2 it will certainly be another time of learning and engagement with each other.

The message of this Gospel story reminds us of our Christian responsibility to love one another and an authentic expression of this love is how we reach out to each other and communicate in a positive and caring way.
