Some ideas for fair, effective fighting are - choosing the right time and place and keeping to the real issue by stating exactly what the disagreement is about: listening to and checking out the other person’s feelings but giving the silent treatment or running away solve nothing. There should be no name-calling or insults and never physical violence. Making excuses should be avoided, as they are hard to listen to and get off the real issue. Sweeping statements should be avoided including words such as ‘always’ or ‘never’. Discuss what you agree about and think how you can build on this. Don’t try to win by withholding love or other rewards. It is important to admit your own mistakes and to agree with some of the other person’s points. Take time out if things are getting heated or you need a break. Be kind, fair, and forgiving. When a solution is agreed upon celebrate in some way. If parents argue like this in front of the children it gives them a good model to follow but do not draw them into your arguments. They love you both and should not be forced to take sides. Br Michael Flaherty College Captain’s Dux Assembly Speech Good afternoon teachers and students, I thought I’d start off the year by sharing some words of wisdom which I’ve been fortunate enough to hear during my time at CBC. I’d like to begin with a saying from Mr Genner - he once told us that success in mathematics can be defined as natural talent multiplied by the amount of effort put in. This is similar to a quote from Mr Griffin from our music department who said that the key to musical success is the quality and the quantity of your practice. These philosophies are not only applicable to maths or music; they can be applied to any subject and to any task we may face. Put simply though, effort = reward. And as we reflect on 2013, our former Year 12 friends have shown us that through hard work and effort, the success will follow. I remember when I was a Year 9; I sat with the rest of the college in this very gym for the Dux Assembly. Naturally, I thought that all this fuss over academic achievements is something for the older kids to worry about. That is until Mr Jalleh took to the podium and directed his address towards the younger students, saying that the academic success of these particular students was not a feat that they achieved in a single year. Their preparation and good study habits began years before. I think these are important insights into achieving success at school and something we can all learn from. It’s never too early to start preparing for Year 12 and the sooner you start the easier it will be. But of course, with all the laborious school work, you need to look out for your mates. Mr Harris once told a story to Smith House and it goes something like this - There was a forest, filled with trees who were all friends. One day an axe came into the forest with some bad intentions, but the oldest and wisest tree said “Do not fear the axe. Remember the handle for it was once one of us.” Being a part of the CBC community is something we should all be proud of. In the holidays I attended a Captain’s Conference in Melbourne, and after those four days, every person there knew that CBC Wakefield Street wears the purple and white. So let’s continue to make CBC a place of faith, excellence, community and compassion. And as your College Captain, I look forward to meeting you over the course of the year and I wish you every success for 2014. Thank you. College Captain’s Dux Assembly SpeechGood afternoon teachers and students,

I thought I’d start off the year by sharing some words of wisdom which I’ve been fortunate enough to hear during my time at CBC.

Their preparation and

good study habits began years before.

Remember the handle for it was once one of us.”

Being a part of the CBC community is something we should all be proud of.

Thank you.
