As recognised by the government, the furniture industry is one of the key industries that drive Indonesia’s economy. The government continues to boost the furniture industry growth by improving the performance of manufacturing industries which are classified as labour-intensive and export-oriented sectors. According to Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartanto, “the government is determined to make it a national priority industry as this industry is a trademark of Indonesia.”

According to the Minister of Industry, the development of the domestic furniture industry has yet to reach its full potential and currently prospective in growth forecast because it is supported by the availability of abundant sources of raw materials, including wood and rattan. This opportunity is reflected in Indonesia as a producer of 80% of the

world’s rattan raw materials, with rattan-producing regions in Indonesia spread across various islands, especially in Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra.

Reporting through Indonesia’s Stock Exchange’s IDN Financials, Minister Hartanto emphasized that the furniture industry is a downstream sector whose products have high added value and play an important role in driving national economic growth. The Ministry of Industry noted, throughout 2018, the furniture industry’s contribution to the non-oil and gas industry’s GDP was 1.36%. In addition, the growth of the furniture industry sector in Indonesia shows a positive trend, in which from year to year the business actors are increasing.

As the inspiring platform to motivate furniture industry players in stepping up their manufacturing capabilities with beneficial machinery, products and

solutions, IFMAC is focused on presenting the best technological solutions that can support furniture businesses in beefing up their production capabilities. The exhibition is always graced with the presence of hundreds of exhibiting companies from many countries to share their expertise to local businesses. Year on year, the exhibition sees many returning companies bringing in more machinery and covering larger booths and scores an expansion in floor space compared to its last edition – all due to the rising demand of new quality technologies by Indonesian furniture manufacturers and service providers.

The participation of more inter–national companies and bigger local players bodes well for the development of Indonesia’s furniture manufacturing and woodworking industries, where the market is opening up to keep up with global competition. Implementation

Last year, IFMAC reached new highlight in its 2018 edition with the first official German pavilion at the exhibition. For the first time, visitors saw the ‘German Pavilion’ that showed the official joint stand of German companies where they presented their products and services under the “Made in Germany” brand. The group presence of German exhibiting companies with various expertise indicated further contribution towards Indonesian industry players’ knowledge on Germany’s strengths and contributions to the world’s furniture production markets.

IFMAC 2018 proudly received the participation of companies under the inaugural German Pavilion. The German companies include industry leaders such as Anthon GmbH Maschinen- und Anlagenbau, Electronic Wood Systmes GmbH, Fagus-Grecon Greten GmbH & Co Kg, Haeberlein GmbH, Hans Weber Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Homag Asia, Michael Weinig Asia, Wilhelm Altendorf GmbH & Co. KG, Pollmeier Massivholz GmbH & Co. KG, Jowat SE, Simon Möhringer Anlagenbau GmbH and more.

The German Pavilion’s representative, Mr. Ingo Bette shared that, “We are here at IFMAC for the first time for German group, we have quite a range from the exhibitors starting from the raw products (German Woods Species to Machinery Manufacturers and Tooling) all the way to software, adhesives, varnish, etc. Germany is able to offer the entire range of products for primary and secondary wood processing industry. Indonesia is very important market right now. And will continue to be so again for the future, with rising standard living with growing market opportunity, also German investment here (in the show like, what you saw in here) is going to grow.”

The German furniture industry is strong on its own with revenue in its furniture market expected to amount

to US$61,362m in 2019 according to Statista. The market is expected to grow annually by 0.06% (CAGR 2019-2023). Based on EUWID report, on the basis of the 3.0 % growth to £ 18.206 m achieved in sales revenue by the end of June, the German wood industry divided into the timber industry and the furniture industry also wants to achieve a comparable rate of growth in the year as a whole.

According to CSIL Market Research, Germany is the largest market in Europe and one of the best performers in furniture consumption growth in Western Europe. Notwithstanding that, the figures on rising export business indicate the desire for German furniture manufacturers and furniture production technology suppliers to look at other markets for expansion. Indonesia in particular is of huge interest due its untapped potential and large market distribution possibility. German companies have traditionally come into the Indonesian market to introduce its manufacturing expertise, now with its Industry 4.0 technologies even to help local furniture factories produce smarter and deliver better services to their customers.

For the Germany-Indonesia partnership in the furniture industry to blossom further, industry experts believe that the investments would have to be two-way. This could mean that Indonesians could be buying more

German-made furniture in the future too. Apart from local manufacturers adopting German technologies and machines in their factories, imports of raw materials such as timber and adhesives for wood and other non-wood furniture could be meaningful trade exchanges for both countries.

High quality German furniture with competitive prices that meet the functional home needs of Indonesia’s growing middle income could soon be a staple buy adorning furniture retailers spaces too. With trade exchange also comes sharing of expertise and information where both German and Indonesian furniture industry players learn about each market demand and potential for growth better.

Indonesian furniture companies are also going to Germany to increase exports to the market there. According to Mr. Abdul Sobur, Secretary-General of the Indonesian Furniture and Handicraft Industry Association (HIMKI), said the increase in furniture exports in Q2-2018 was primarily supported by the participation of Indonesian furniture manufacturers in furniture exhibitions in several countries, including Germany and other countries in the preceding quarter.

He also detected a strong co-relation between rising demand and the organisation of - and participation in - furniture exhibitions. That said, while future editions of IFMAC continue to expand with bigger German Pavilion, furniture exhibitions in Germany such as LIGNA can also expect the participation of Indonesian companies.

GERMANY SET TO BECOME A KEY FOREIGN PLAYER IN INDONESIA’S FURNITURE MARKET

Para ahli menyarankan agar sebaiknya investasi berjalan dua arah demi menjaga hubungan baik kedua negara.

knowledge every day by developing new solutions for what’s next, whether it’s new colours to capitalize on the latest trend, new formulations to help meet regulatory needs and consumer preference, or new processes to help a finishing line move faster and more efficiently.

How well the company knows cabinetry will intrigue customers on their knowledge for wood and composite building products also. As the company described, “the recovery of the housing market brought a new sensibility to manufacturers of siding, doors, windows, and other building products - a commitment to faster, more efficient manufacturing processes. Meanwhile, homeowner tastes have exploded into the age of mass customization, sweeping away the days of block after block of the same colour home, with the same colour door, and same colour windows.” Reconciling these two trends may seems daunting, but for Sherwin-Williams, balancing aesthetics with performance is what the company does every day. Their wood and composite building products portfolio provides value that can be experienced once on the finishing line, then again in the finished home.

Mr. Zylajew shared that, “We did a kitchen research by going to households as part of our research requirement when we develop new product. Through this, we were able to analyse how people work in the local kitchen furniture production industry, how kitchens are used, how items are stored, what special items Indonesia like every other country has and others. From here we want to find the right solutions that can be applied later on and hopefully we did receive a lot of information that can be put to good use.”

The company’s service culture puts end-users alongside the everybody that gets in touch with their products

As an innovative company in the field of measurement, quality and production management systems for the panel board industry, Electronic Wood Systems (EWS) eyes growing markets that require its expertise. Coming to Indonesia for the first time in 2018 through the IFMAC and WOODMAC exhibitions, EWS saw the country’s potential in developing its furniture industry by building on its panel board manufacturing strength.

Standing by their mantra of ‘Competence and Courage’, EWS is devoted to inventing and developing new ideas and concepts of technology. When venturing into a new market like Indonesia, the company will continue their success by putting innovative research and development, high quality and best technical service first. The exchange of knowledge with their business partners is fundamental to achieve this success. While offering a complete range of quality supervising systems at competitive prices featuring high precision, robustness, system integration and low maintenance, EWS also knows that they must listen to their partners and customers.

This is essentially because the company’s continued success has been based on the confidence of their customers, EWS’ international presence, strong partnerships and their willingness to explore new business ideas. The company strives to treat everyone fairly. This approach brings success to everyone - their customers, partners and suppliers. While EWS is realistic about its desire for success in business, it is however not to be taken at any price.

With trust and respect, EWS carefully keeps track of the exciting developments in the board industry and derive important new tasks out of it. The company believes that ‘the little extra’ in all areas of their business shall differentiate them positively from their competitors. In seeking partnership, EWS’s first priority is to maintain the strength of their company. The company recognised that this requires financial stability, efficient business processes, well-trained and satisfied employees and a healthy working environment. Hoping

to identify like-minded partners in Indonesia, Electronic Wood Systems aim for a mutually-beneficial collaboration with a local company to together manufacture a wide range of high-quality, modern measuring systems for Indonesia’s board industry.

By the use of contact rolls sonic transmitters and sonic receivers always float in a constant distance to the board surface. So, the transmitted signal is in resonance with the sonic which is reflected from the board surface. This results in an extensive increase of the sound penetration. So, very thick and low-density boards can be inspected. The system’s contact rolls and frame also can be used for thickness measurement at reasonable additional cost.
