Insight News
Happy Thanksgiving and upcoming Merry Christmas from IRI!
We have had a lot going on in the last two months, and this is-
sue of our newsletter reflects the amazing things we have been
able to see and do in Hong Kong and the Philippines. We had
so much to talk about, we ran out of room in our regular format,
so we hope you enjoy the extra-length edition of our newsletter
this month. Believe it or not, this still doesn’t cover everything,
but hopefully we can include some additional information in our
next editions, as well. Have a blessed Christmas and a happy
New Year!
Hi again from Hong Kong. As you know from our last Newsletter, I have been work-
ing in and around the Hong Kong area. Like all large cities, Hong Kong has many
sub-communities that make up what the world understands as Hong Kong. I have
been living in what is known as the New Territory area. Just outside of the subdivi-
sion of Fairview Park. This is a great place to stay as it has easy to access transport
to get to the different locations around the Hong Kong area where we are working.
Hong Kong I have been working with Linda Smyth, training her on understanding IRI’s programs.
Linda has adapted the ABC workshop into her
woman’s bible study and the results have been
exciting. I have been holding training work-
shops at Fairview Park Christian Church 2 to 3
times a week and at a Chinese Church in an-
other part of the city once a week. The partici-
pants of this training develop a deeper perspec-
tive of the scriptures and their personal rela-
tionship with Jesus Christ. They all have de-
veloped a direct identity with themselves for
the first time in their life. The single biggest
discovery we have had here is that same one
we keep having else where. This is the fact that people here, for whatever reason,
have not developed their self empowered tools to develop their own ideas or concepts.
The result is them seeing themselves in an indirect identity. Again, ABC thinking
training starts the transformation process for people to build a relationship with them-
selves, Christ, Community, and world.
Jason and Kitty continue to work with the Hong Kong school system. The education
system there has experienced several changes that are causing concern among the
teachers. One is a shift in educational style from rote learning to abstract thinking and
problem solving. The other is adding SEN students (students with special educational
needs) to the “regular” classrooms. These two changes have a lot to do with changing
perspective (to conceptual thinking!) and building relationships. Kitty has asked Jason
to help her bring IRI’s ideas to the educational community. She and Jason believe that

IRI has a lot to offer the teachers and students of Hong Kong. Their work is small right
now, but they are expanding their contacts and working with new schools this year. Jason
will also be the keynote speaker at a teacher’s conference dealing with classroom integra-
tion. Jason is also working with some churches Kitty is connected with, doing some youth
training programs with high-school and college-aged students, helping them understand
and improve their relationship with God and each other. We hope Hong Kong will become
a center for cognitive development over the next few years.
Philippines Linda Smyth and I went to the Philippines on the 17th of Oct. I held two training sessions
while there. One was with Linda, Cody, and Marie taking them further into ABC develop-
ment as trainers. Then, a few days later, we had eight district Church leaders come from
the Manila area for IBS training. Cody and Marie combined the ABC training with the
IBS training for the first time ever. We had 3 days to give these leaders an overview of
ABC thinking. We did not get to go into the training exercises at this time. But here are
some comments that were made by some of the participants. Please bear in mind that these
are non-native English speakers making comments in English.
From a Youth Leader:
“Basically, I thought it was just a simple thinking style, you think
but you didn't realize what you're thinking. The ABC Worldview
teach me on how to think, and I’m sure it would make a big impact
in my ministry specially my relationship
to the Lord {An Elder}. We know our
culture, our belief, and some other sys-
tem, but never think of that before. But
we see it now the big difference, KNOWL-
EDGE < THINK > to COMPREHEND this
ABC level of thinking.”
From a Deacon:
“With this retreat, I was so amazed that
in just simple thinking style, you can ex-
pand the words, and yet still gives a lot
of understanding. It enhance my knowledge, knowing that this was
my first time to encounter, and yet I know that there are still a lot
of thinking to learn.”
Other Comments (From Marie):
“I will quote one of the attendees comment,’ I attended a very nice
and powerful retreat, first time in my life. Thanks so much for the
knowledge turned comprehended things.’”
“Wow that was great, and again a Minister send me a text mes-
sage, saying that he used the ‘ABC Worldview Thinking’ style that
Sunday, when he returned at his local church, and everybody was
amazed at this thinking style.”
These men have already scheduled follow up training for 2014 and 2015. Along with this,
IRI has been scheduled to train more Philippine church leaders and two Seminary Profes-

sors from Myanmar in March 2015. In 2016 starting in March, IRI has been re-
quested to train church leaders in five churches. Some of these churches are in very
remote areas and are struggling with syncretism.
Mozambique We praise God for what is going on in Mozambique. Leonard and Pastor Paulino
have been very busy. One of the things that needs to be understood is that as we
coach ABC thinking, several things take place. The information (bible knowledge,
etc.) that people internalize becomes real as the person becomes aware of who they
are. They develop how to Think! The reality of analytical abstract thinking is the
ability to problem solve. Awareness comes forth of what is necessary in order to
make things work correctly. Things like discernment, escape from dependency, how
to analyze within the context of your own culture, how to own your personal identity,
and (most of all) WHY things work. As difficult as it may be to believe (it was hard
for us to understand at first), we have yet to find a post-colonial cultural group that
owns their own identity, let alone an individual within that culture. So the question
for the day is: how do you build a relationship with God if you don’t know who you
are? This is why syncretism is so hard for these believers to overcome.
Since the first part of 2014 Leonard has helped Pastor Paulino focus on the problems
the pastor is facing with syncretism in his own cultural group. The outcome of this
focus has been nothing short of a miracle. The Pastor put his focus on helping his
cultural group learn, as he has, how to think ABC… This puts Abstract, or analysis
into people’s existing thought process. By helping the church leaders learn how to
think abstractly about their issues, they have been able to spread this teaching among
the church members. Keep in mind that our understanding of discernment, right and
wrong, faith, sin, salvation, God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, personal identity and many other
key concepts in Christianity are all abstract. The Bible is a conceptual book! When
the Church leaders and then members internalized what they believed and then
owned it, the impact was dramatic. We have over 30 churches (that we know of) that
have experienced a modern-day reformation with the use of ABC thinking! In most
cases, they have also doubled in the numbers of believers because the members fi-
nally comprehend what they believe in.
Leonard’s Report IRI-Mozambique is working with over thirty Churches this year,
2014. More and more people visit us at our office in a town called
Chimoio in Manica province. These people include African Mission-
aries, Politicians, Academics, Pastors, Biblical teachers, Academic
teachers and students alike. We have expanded our work to other
provinces of Mozambique such as Sofala, Quelimane, Nampula and
Niassa. We hope to reach every province in few years. We have
touched hearts in Zimbabwe and South Africa and we also hope to
spread the ABC-Thinking throughout Africa.IRI-Mozambique re-
quested prayers for peaceful Presidential and Parliamentary elec-
tions. Thank God the elections were by and large peaceful. Other
African countries should learn a lot from the Mozambican elections. As a result of ABC-Thinking Over thirty communities in Macate
District in Manica province have embarked on several projects
which include:

Leonard and I will be going into the bush in July of 2015 to meet with as many of these
churches as we can to document these things in person and on video. I will be in Mozam-
bique until October of 2015, and then I will go home to Casper Wyoming and see my wife for
several months and catch up on documentation. I will be open to visit any of you that would
like for me to come. As I said earlier, however, I will leave in February 2015 for the Philip-
pines, so I won’t be able to visit until Fall of next year. Jason Nichols will be back in the states
soon and will be able visit with you at your convenience.
RSA (Republic of South Africa) Leonard and I are planning at this time is to leave Mozambique the last day of May 2015 and
work with Jason in Johannesburg, South Africa for a month. We are scheduled to do two five
to ten day training workshops. We have several different organizations that are interested in
the program. One of the main groups is the Aletheia board of directors. As many of our sup-
porters know, Alethia is the ministry Dr. Stuart Cook left behind in South Africa. Dr. Cook
developed the core theories we work with in our ministry, and we want the members of Ale-
thia to see where this work is going and what it has accomplished. We also know they will
benefit from its growth. Leonard and I will be returning to Mozambique the first of July to
start our documentation of the Macate churches.
USA Since I will be traveling around the world this spring and summer, Jason will be across the
U.S. working with and updating our various supporters and partners in the States. We have
been working on the new training material together while we have been in Hong Kong, and I
am very excited to see what he will accomplish this next year. In closing this month’s letter I
want to take a moment to talk about our long-term plans. We are receiving requests for train-
ing from many people in many countries—far more than we can work with. Jason and I can
only be in so many places at once! Fortunately, we have had much spiritual guidance in find-
ing disciples in each country that we are working in to continue this work. These men and
women speak English and, in most cases, several national languages. Our focus is not to stay
20 or 30 years in the same location. We are there to empower the nationals in Christ and help
them develop a tool box in their cultural cognitive style so they can use what others have
helped them learn in their own culture. This is where the transformation that Paul talks about
takes place. Believing is the beginning, but belief without understanding is not enough.
Transformation is a thinking style paradigm shift if you will. This needs to happen, according
to Paul in Roman 12:2. It is easy to see belief, but we have found a way to initiate and track
transformation. We do it with the nationals not working for us but empowered within their
own culture.

to RSA and return to Mozambique. We also need to fly 2 Seminary professors from Myan-
mar to the Philippines for this training. In June, Leonard and I will return to RSA do con-
duct the previously mentioned training with Alethia. This trip will be about $2000. In Oct.

My husband, Doug, and I have known Al & Velma for many years. We worked with Al
and Velma from the beginning as God began the work of IRI.
Earlier this month my mother and I had the opportunity to attend the International Confer-
ence on Missions in Columbus, OH on behalf of IRI. This is the second year my mother
has attended to help with the IRI booth. The real adventure began when we learned
Velma would not be attending and would be shipping the booth supplies. Velma was un-
able to attend due to circumstances beyond her control and Al and Jason were still work-
ing in Hong Kong. My mother & I arrived in Columbus on Thursday, Nov 13th. After
checking in at our hotel we walked across the street to the Convention Center. With the
weather being so cold and snow flurries, we were very thankful for the short walk to our
destination.
As we walked through the convention hall we saw a minister friend from a few years ago.
It was fun to catch up with our friend, Danny. He was as surprised to see us. After visit-
ing for a few minutes we moved on to find our booth and meet with the men who drove up
from our church in Oklahoma. We spent the evening looking at other booths and enjoyed
a great praise and worship time in the evening session. It was a great feeling to hear more
than 3000 people singing praises to our God. The message that was shared was very chal-
lenging.
Friday morning our booth supplies arrived at the hotel. We transported the supplies to the
convention center and we were able to get our booth set up. It was quite a team effort as
none of us had set up the display signs before. Once the booth was set up we began talk-
ing and sharing with people as they were walking through the displays in the convention
hall.
There were some people that were very interested in the ABC Thinking principles and
how these principles worked with a Biblical Worldview. We were able to give brief over-
views, along with information on how to get more details through our website as well as
following on Facebook.
We also had the opportunity to share this same information with several young people as
they traveled from booth to booth on their information scavenger hunt.
One of the great things about attending the ICOM is meeting friends you only see at these
gatherings because we are all serving in different ways and different places, friends and
missionaries from across the United States and around the world. It is a great time of lis-
tening, encouraging and sharing with others who have a like mind of furthering the gospel
of Christ. It was such a wonderful experience each evening to share in praise and worship
as the Word of God was shared.
The convention is one of those places you can go where you can talk the “language of
missions” and know that person you are talking to understands that language. You can
know the friend you are talking with carries the same burden for the Gospel and the World
that you do.
I always come home with a renewed strength knowing that thousands of others believe in
the work of sharing the Gospel around the world and in each of our own hometowns.
I look forward to future opportunities for sharing the work that God is doing through IRI
and join you in praying that God will continue to use each of us to share the Good News.
May God continue to bless you,
Quaye Berry
