I have had the backing of first class work colleagues, trustees and many external partners who have helped me to make HERIB what it is today. I give my grateful thanks to everyone for their support. We are recruiting for a new Chief Executive now, at the beginning of May, and I hope the announcement of my successor will be made soon. I will miss you all and think about you when I am in my garden pottering around being retired. I will keep in touch and follow what you are all doing with interest. Goodbye to Sue Pallister It is with regret that we must say farewell to our General Manager Sue Pallister who retires at the end of July after serving our charity with distinction for the last 19 years. Over this time Sue has provided a figure of stability throughout the many changes and challenges including the development of the buildings in which we operate and the range and volume of the services we provide. She has also formed the bridge between the interests and welfare of the staff and users and the plans and aspirations of a changing Board of Trustees, as well as successfully maintaining the smooth provision of our services and our profile to the outside world. I believe the highlight of her time at HERIB has been the visit some 18 months ago of Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal. This special occasion passed without a hitch, a testimony to Sue’s organizational ability. The Board wish to thank her warmly for her hard work and dedication and wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement. Eric Harrod

Welcome to David Dodds Welcome to David Dodds our new minibus driver for our Wednesday and Friday Day Groups. David originally worked as a volunteer with HERIB before joining us as a member of staff in January.
Although he is employed as a driver, don’t be surprised to see David helping out on a fundraising collection or on the door at a Craft Fayre event, as he still volunteers on his days off!
Services News
HERIB Day Groups HERIB runs nine Day Groups, four at our centre on Beverley Road in Hull and five around the County as far apart as Withernsea, Bridlington, Hornsea, Hessle and Goole with venues varying from church halls, to community centres and even a pub. Our drivers collect people from home in our specially adapted minibuses and take them home again after the end of the afternoon. Our Hull Day groups run from Monday to Thursday and include lunch which is home cooked by Karen, after which staff organise a fun packed afternoon with a variety of activities. We also have a regular hairdresser, Hayley who comes into the centre every Tuesday and Thursday. Our ladies (and gents) love our pampering sessions. We are currently also looking for someone who would be happy to come along and help, especially for someone able to paint nails! Changes to Home Visiting Due to an increase in the home visitor’s workload, in particular the high volume of new referrals, you may notice we are not able to visit as often as we did previously. Jayne, Harry, Janie, Sandra and Tracy cover an enormous area including Hull and the whole of the East Riding, therefore spending much of their time out of the office, but they are always at the end of the phone and happy to arrange a visit if there is something you think we can help you with. Northern Ballet Visits HERIB
Northern Ballet Tour
Back in March, HERIB enjoyed a visit from Leanne Kirkham, Dance Education Officer with the Northern Ballet Theatre who spoke to clients about Northern Ballet Theatre’s production of “Beauty and the Beast”. Leanne brought along some costumes and a selection of ballet shoes as well as demonstrating some ballet moves and positions. Of course, Harry the HERIB Bear had to get in on the action!
Following on from this workshop, HERIB arranged a trip to the ballet at Hull New theatre for a group of visually impaired clients. As well as enjoying an audio described performance, the group got the chance to experience some of the costumes and scenery up close during a “touch tour” and took part in a movement workshop with members of the ballet.
GLAUCOMA SUPPORT GROUP
Are you looking for help, advice and support on living with Glaucoma? Your local Glaucoma Support Group meets at HERIB on the 1st Friday of every month between 11am—2pm. For more information, call HERIB on 01482 342297.

Visually Impaired People’s Forum
The Visually Impaired People’s Forum is a place where partially sighted and blind people can raise concerns and have a voice to influence things that affect them. Hosted by HERIB the forum is attended by blind and partially sighted people, professionals and representatives who work with blind and partially sighted people. We are currently exploring several areas of work, which includes:
• Access to Hull Interchange
• Public Transport (buses)
• Accessible patient letters
• Accessibility of the East York-
shire Eye Hospital
• Welfare Reform
If you are a partially sighted or a blind person who has experienced any difficulties in these areas or have a particular concern or issue you would like the VIP forum to look at then come along to our next meeting. To find out more contact: Julie

New Hairdressing Service
HERIB is delighted to announce a new hairdressing service. Professional hairdresser Hayley Lees now visits our Beverley Road centre on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 1—3pm. Our clients, both male and female, can now enjoy a friendly, personal service in familiar and comfortable surroundings. There is a charge for this service but Hayley’s prices are far less than most high street salons with trims starting from £7, cut and blow dries from £12 and full head colouring from £35. Resource Centre Our Resource Centre on Beverley Road, Hull is full of products and information leaflets to help you adjust to daily life with your sight loss. It is open weekdays from 9am—4.00pm. Please call us to make an appointment to avoid unnecessary waiting. Mobile Resource Service Our Mobile Resource Service travels the county offering those who live outside of Hull the chance to try out equipment and get advice and information to help with the practicalities of daily life. Then why not join “Looking Ahead”? “Looking Ahead” is a series of seven weekly information sessions for anyone who is getting accustomed to their loss of vision. Each session focuses on a topic or barrier you may face and offers constructive and practical advice to help you maintain your independence, keep in touch, get around safely and understand your eye condition. Plus lots more useful information and the chance to meet other people with sight loss. As well as the team from HERIB, experts from other local organisations will be providing the advice and guidance in an informal and friendly environment where you can feel at ease and confident to ask questions

Harry’s Hairy Bike Ride 2012
In April two adventurous (some might say crazy!) friends, Craig Smith and Gary Jackson, took on the challenge of a lifetime as they attempted to cycle around 900 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a tandem bicycle to raise vital funds for HERIB and Help for Heroes. After the glorious sunshine of February, the weather took an unfortunate turn for the worse and our tandem team faced arctic conditions and gale force winds throughout almost their entire journey. The pair endured early morning starts and long days covering an average of 140 miles per day. They spent restless nights in a tent covered by ice and pushed themselves to their physical limits to battle through aching knees and hands frozen so cold that they could barely change gear on the bike.
At times the effort was so great they struggled to talk to each other and relied on rations of chocolate and fruit to keep them going in between meeting up with their support vehicle which was kindly crewed by Craig’s father. Finally, on Easter Sunday, to everyone’s relief and delight Craig & Gary reached Land’s End to a big welcome and celebrations with their friends and family including Jack and Abbie pictured below.
What an incredible achievement! The team have raised in the region of £1,000 although no amount of money could do justice to their incredible efforts. PS!!! It is still not too late to donate. Saints & Sinners Pantomime A huge thank you to the cast and production team of this year’s Saints & Sinners pantomime which was not only incredibly entertaining but which raised a fantastic £900 for HERIB. Thanks to everyone at All Saints Church, Hessle for all your hard work.
Congratulations Sarah! HERIB client Sarah Towse celebrated her 100th birthday in March and enjoyed a party with her family and fellow residents at her residential home. Sarah very generously asked for donations to HERIB in lieu of birthday gifts and raised a fabulous £267.
Christmas Raffle Thank you to everyone who sold raffle tickets. Altogether we sold tickets totalling £1,163 which was over £200 more than the previous year so thank you very much.
Hull City FC collection Thanks to Hull City FC and their supporters who donated an amazing £643 at our collection during their last home game of the season in April.

Whatever happened to springtime? It only seems like yesterday since Christmas, yet the months have flown by. Easter, too, has come and gone and I suspect that by the time you read this, May, June or even July will be upon us. Isaac Watts, the writer of the Hymn “O God, our help in ages past…” hastens to remind us that although some things in the universe remain perpetual, we humans are given only a temporal place. He writes: “Time like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.” Time is very precious. It behoves us all to take care of our time. Our mortality is something we quite readily brush under the carpet. But as we learn from the biblical text:

Dear volunteers, Thank you so much for everything you do. We never cease to be amazed by what our volunteers do for HERIB and we are very grateful for their fantastic commitment. As a charity, we couldn’t offer a number of really important services without people donating their time as volunteers. Volunteers assist with our day groups, help with our charity administration, support our fundraising activities, help run our mobile resource service and lots more! They give up huge amounts of time, take on unglamorous but necessary work and do it with a smile. Every one of our volunteers makes a massive difference. If you have not tried volunteering, there’s no better time to get involved. All HERIB volunteers receive an induction and training in Visual Impairment Awareness and other relevant courses. Travel and other expenses will be paid as appropriate. Our training courses aim to offer anyone the skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver services which are accessible and inclusive for visually impaired people. They are suitable for caring and support staff, retail, entertainment and front line public sector staff.
