As we all head out for our summer holidays, I would like to take a moment to reflect and celebrate what has clearly been a year of excellence at the BSN. The result of our Autumn term ISI inspection of ‘Excellent’ across the board, indicates the daily academic brilliance that our staff facilitate year in and year out, as well as the collective excellence of our pupils in academia, performing arts, sport and social responsibility. I would just like to acknowledge that these accomplishments take a sincere level of commitment and vision on the part of everyone in our community – and I am very proud of our school.

On a personal note, my family and I have been greatly enriched by the truly ‘Internationally British’ experience. We clearly had the British part sorted, but it has been the cultural diversity that is woven

through this community which has enveloped and welcomed us. Thank you for the warm welcome.

I look forward to our exciting future as the BSN moves beyond excellence. To follow our progress as we move forward, please follow me on twitter, view my vlog on the BSN website and read my blog on my website: www.kieranearley.co.uk.

Every day we are affected and inspired by the people who surround us. Whether they be our role models, politicians, peers or colleagues – these people help define the lens through which we see the world. So, shouldn’t we endeavour to surround ourselves with people who aspire to be the very best they can be?

This is especially true here at the BSN. It is a given that we want all our teachers to be the very best at what they do. We trust them to inspire the next generation to want to do great things, to enjoy life and give them every tool they need to

succeed. This is why the continued development of teachers and school support staff is so essential.

“The students’ experience is predicated on the professionalism of the people with whom they come into contact,” explains CEO and Principal Kieran Earley.

“It’s purely about the very best people deploying the very best skills, in the best way – every single day. We want our staff to feel committed, purposeful and ready to be challenged

… and that doesn’t just happen. That has to be supported and on top of that, it has to be expected.”

Investing in ‘the Best People’ – to Ensure the ‘Best’ Education

Page 7: Insight Summer 2016

The International Leadership Academy is Born

The BSN’s International Leadership Academy (ILA) is an in-house facility that will employ experts to teach, develop and invest in current staff members, so that they can be their very best professional selves.

While Continued Professional Development (CPD) programmes have long been a part of the BSN’s ethos, the ILA will add strategic direction and a centralised (and physical) base of operations. The goal is to stream-line a number of pre-existing development programmes and to find ways of improving and adding to them. After all, what better way to encourage constant self-evaluation and development in staff, than by leading by example.

The ILA will be up-and-running by September 2016, but some of the courses that are already on offer include teaching assistant qualifications, international leadership, middle leadership and various safe guarding programmes.

“Productivity and collaboration is visible”

Many of the CPD programmes currently taking place across the

BSN focus on understanding and implementing cutting edge teaching techniques.

Junior School Leidschenveen (JSL) staff for example have been working with Dr Frank Serafini, Professor of Literacy Education and Children’s Literature from Arizona State University, in a virtual residency. During these sessions teachers have been looking at ways to develop children’s critical literacy skills and to find dynamic ways of encouraging engagement.

In the name of sharing new-found knowledge and best practices, a notice board has been put up in the Junior School Vlaskamp (JSV) staff room. Here you will find golden lesson plans, encouraging notes and moral boosters, all aimed at fostering a positive work environment and giving staff a place to acknowledge colleagues successes.

Meanwhile at Junior School Diamanthorst (JSD), staff have been focusing on their own growth and development as a team.

“As a whole staff, we have worked together with a coaching team from the company INPRIME to increase our understanding of our communication style, how we respond and feedback to each other, and how to perform at an optimum level at work,” explained JSD Deputy Headteacher, Rebecca Findlay.

“The results have been really effective, thus creating a highly motivated, cohesive and happy team of staff. There is an enthusiastic and positive vibe throughout the school and the productivity and collaboration is visible,” she added.

This dedication to building a ‘strong team’ is one of the factors on which the school prides itself. After all, ‘we are only as strong as our weakest link,’ is a cliché for a reason. Staff members are constantly taking every opportunity to support one another to create a healthy and happy working environment – once again, using their own behaviour to set examples for their students.

Senior School staff have also been sharing best practice amongst each other through the ‘TeachEatTakeaway’ initiative. Sessions take place on a weekly basis during lunchtimes, during which staff share ideas, good practice, practical innovation and personal insights in

teaching with any type of technology. The concept was first created by Ewan McIntosh back in 2006 and is designed to offer colleagues the opportunity to present ideas, so that they can be ‘taken away’ and used in other lessons regardless of the subject.

The Opportunity to Exceed

With these opportunities, however, comes a high level of expectation and responsibility. According to Kieran Earley, current and future staff members need to show initiative and a real desire to be developed by the school.

“If you join this school, we expect you to develop. We expect you to be better this year than you were last year. This is not a neutral statement – it’s a statement of intent. This is what it means to join the BSN.”

By prioritising staff needs, and ensuring career progression and job satisfaction, the BSN and its new ILA will ensure that each and every member of staff will contribute to the continued development of the school, and ultimately its exceptional standards of education. International Musical Extravaganza

Earlier this term the BSN welcomed some of the finest instrumentalists and singers from The International School of Moscow, the British International School of Ljubljana, King’s College and The British School of Murcia. Together with our own finest

musicians, the students took part in three days of workshops, performances and competitions, as well as a full social and cultural programme as part of the second COBIS Senior School Music Festival.

Across the three days the students performed in duets, trios, quartets, ensembles, rock bands, and as soloists. On Sunday afternoon the festival reached a huge crescendo with a special concert in the school hall.

Performing for a Worthy Cause

Earlier in the term the corridors, classrooms, halls and playgrounds of our three junior schools buzzed for one week with the sweet sound of music, and all for a very worthy cause. Students, staff and parents from across the junior school community expressed their creativity by collaborating to raise money for ‘Save the Children’

for this year’s Performance Week.During breaks and

lunchtimes as well as before and after school, there were a host of fantastic performances, including instrumental soloists, flash mobs, string ensembles, poetry recitals, intimate acoustic sessions and showcase concerts. Not to be outdone the Senior School choir ‘Crescendo’ came through to deliver their words of elderly wisdom in a rousing acapella performance of “When I’m 64” at

both Junior School Diamanthorst and Junior School Leidschenveen!

A huge thank you to all the performers who we secretly know put in many extra hours to rehearse and practice their pieces. Special thanks also to the entire BSN Community for their generous support towards this fantastic cause.

As one of Europe’s premier British international schools, and as we continue to build ‘beyond excellence,’ it is crucial to the success of The British School in The Netherlands that we have the right people leading the charge.

Whilst this year has seen several senior leadership appointments at the BSN, we want to especially acknowledge these two pivotal roles which were introduced this year.

Director of the International Leadership Academy

Elizabeth Free will join The BSN in September from her current position as Head of Professional Development at Oxford University Press, a department of Oxford University. Elizabeth is an internationally recognised leader of continuing professional development and learning (CPDL) services in the UK and across the world. She also has a headship background and expertise in school growth, improvement and development, having been Head of

Primary and Vice-Principal at the British School of Boston in MA, USA, Head of Preparatory School at the Manchester High School for Girls and Head of Junior Schools at Howell’s School in Cardiff.

In Elizabeth’s current role, she heads up one of the UK’s largest network of education professional CPDL services, working with over 120,000 education professionals and 13,000 schools. She has a significant background in British and international education, and the development of CPD for raising the quality of teaching and learning for all.

Elizabeth shares: “The British School in The Netherlands has a world-class vision to become a centre of professional learning excellence. With this aspiration and the significant expertise within the BSN, I look forward to working together to realise this aspiration and ensure that the International Leadership Academy becomes a dynamic, innovative and internationally recognised centre of learning excellence. These are exciting times and I am thoroughly delighted to be joining the team.”

To read more about the International Leadership Academy, please see page 6.

Head of SecurityPatrick O’Dwyer has

specialised in international security and risk management for the past 17 years mainly with American and British companies based in North Africa. He has also provided advice for international organisations based in East Africa, and most

recently has come from the Ivory Coast where he was developing and overseeing the implementation of a risk management programme for an Australian-based company.

He was attracted to the British School as the Head of Security as it was an opportunity to join a prestigious organisation here in the Netherlands and to bring his vast experience to education.

Patrick shared: “I feel very fortunate to join the BSN in this role. Apart from the welcoming atmosphere in each of the schools I have also found a solid foundation on which we can further develop and enhance the security across the BSN. I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead and working with everyone to achieve this.”

Patrick will work alongside the BSN Environmental Health & Safety Committee (EHS) which is responsible for reviewing, evaluating and implementing appropriate actions to further augment overall safety and security.

We welcome both Elizabeth and Patrick to the BSN!

Providing BSN students with the opportunity to put thought into action, whilst combining technology, language, media and real-time topics, creates a rich avenue of discovery for these young people. Two shining examples of these type of innovative learning initiatives at Senior School are seeing amazing results.

Collaborative Learning – The French Department

The French department led by Chantal Rieutort-Louis, Guy Mance, Karine Quillien, Maryse Sportouch and supported by Gideon Williams, Head of eLearning, introduced Year 9 French students to a collaborative

project in the Autumn Term. This saw them use language to take them beyond the confines of the classroom: pretending that they had been on a field trip in France, on a ‘virtual exchange’ which has improved their use of the past tense.

This term’s collaborative project saw all five French language classes acting as travel agents selling to French-speaking countries in a film – complete with the use of ‘green screen’ technology. This project focuses on the future tense, allowing for team-work and preparing these students for future GCSE role play.

Chantal Rieutort-Louis explains:

“Our hidden objectives are to give the students independence and confidence, to encourage enquiry-based learning and to allow the students to be risk-takers and to give them the opportunity to reflect on their progress in French.”

Year 9 student Sophie, says: “I like the collaborative project because you get to use ideas from everyone’s perspective and put it into one piece of work. It’s also a good way to learn new things about a place I’ve never learned about before.”

Applying Global Context to Real-time Issues

Global context can be a powerful tool for evaluating the impact of a real-time issue.

The recent EU referendum to decide whether The United Kingdom should remain within the

European Union (aka Brexit) is a perfect example. This real-time topic was reviewed and debated as part of Senior School Economics studies. Head of Economics, Rachel Kay has raised awareness of the EU referendum and provided students the opportunity to explore the arguments on both sides of the debate. This included reviewing the costs and benefits of EU membership, and the impact of a ‘leave’ vote on both the UK and other EU members.

Some examples of tasks include: a group of confident and vocal, IB students prepared and conducted their own referendum debate on 23 June, in front of a group of students and staff. A Level students used news sources to create their own balanced arguments on both sides of the debate. They supported these with data – something they noticed that the official campaigners often failed to do! Media bias and how it impacts voters trying to make an informed decision was also a part of the discussions.

From a participating student:‘We’ve used the current real

world topics such as Brexit and related it to the topic we’ve studied to further our knowledge and understanding of how economics works in the real world.”

Fostering the development of future global citizens is of paramount importance to the BSN, and these two initiatives have created a unique opportunity for individualised learning.

The Family Association

SupportThe purpose of the Family

Association is to strengthen the relationship between parents, staff and the four school campuses – with the single focus of benefiting the children and students themselves. Today, and through the work of the Family Association, this has become the guiding principle.

Often, this is done with the simplest of things – this term, The FA provided ice-lollies for sports days and key events at all the campuses – a welcome treat for the students who were very happy to cool down after their athletic pursuits. Many thanks also to Mike Mol from the Student Café for co-sponsoring ice creams at Senior School.

Our Community is Our Life-line

Following another busy year for the Family Association, Lisa Brunslev – the Family Association Chair – reminds us of the priceless nature of this group of volunteers.

For many new families joining the BSN, the Family Association (FA) is a lifeline - able to offer support, advice and more importantly, provide friendship - to newcomers and to provide an opportunity to get involved with cultural, educational and social activities which make it easier to fit into our large, international community.

Lisa Brunslev, is very clear about the value of the support offered by the Family Association and tell us: “When I first moved to the Netherlands from China, I was really keen to make new friends and get involved in BSN life, having learnt the value of a strong community during our eight years in Shanghai”.

“I joined the International Team and acted as the Danish Rep, reaching out to new Danish families, helping them settle in, with advice and helpful pointers to getting the best out of life in The Netherlands. I worked closely with the previous Chair, Anne de Berard Nielsen, and when she wanted to

pass on the baton, I found it natural to step into her role, and I have not looked back since!”.

Fundraising

Fundraising is not a major focus of the Family Association, and funds raised predominantly go directly to benefiting students in some way. The Summer and Winter Fairs lead the way and the Second-Hand Uniform and Bring and Buy sales, held at each school campus during the year, are fantastic services for the BSN community.

External donations occur from time to time. Following two

Bring and Buy sales, the FA made donations to the Orphans Feeding Foundation and to Mothers and Babies in Refugee Camp. Likewise, the Second-Hand Uniform sale resulted in a generous donation to Stichting van het Kind which helps children suffering from abuse.

Supporting School Related Groups

Recent work with the Student Leaders at Vlaskamp saw the Family Association helping students to run a Movie Night, with profits going towards a new, wooden climbing boat at their playground. The students worked hard to raise the money themselves, and the Family Association were happy to top-up the balance to ensure they met their goal.

The Student Leaders at Diamanthorst have now requested help with their wish-list for playground improvements and

have run a bake sale to kick-start the journey towards their goal. Supporting students at Leidschenveen took a different path when the FA provided funding for a selection of materials and fabrics which a team of parents used to design some amazing costumes for school productions.

Parents and supporters of the BSN Rugby Club were able to travel with their teams to the final end of season tournaments with the support of the Family Association funding coach transportation. Combine this with the candyfloss machine for the Year 9 Bye Bye Blue Party and a significant donation to the Year 13 Ball which has ensured that our senior students enjoy a party to remember and a great final send-off from the BSN.

Theatre Visit

The Family Association worked with Theatre Company, STET, who visited Vlaskamp and Leidschenveen to present a puppet show which was enjoyed by all the children who saw it. Headteacher, David Porritt said:

“Please accept my thanks for arranging and funding the wonderful dramatic performance of the Snow Queen. It was really wonderful and the children enjoyed it very much indeed. The team who put on the show were most engaging and helpful. A real pleasure to work with. Thank you once again for the idea and for making such a lovely event possible.”

As we move forward we will continue to look for other opportunities to connect with Dutch and international organisations here in the Netherlands.

Language Centre Links

The University of Twente – a frontrunner in socially relevant technological developments – is aiming to deliver all its Bachelors and Masters courses in English by

2018 and is currently working with The BSN Language Centre. Staff from the BSN Language Centre are currently teaching two groups of lecturers to become proficient in using ‘English as a Medium of Instruction’ (EMI) to help them reach this goal. The EMI Pilot Programme was introduced at the Haagse Hogeschool for the first time in September 2015.

The BSN Language Centre has been serving the English and Dutch language learning needs of our international community since it’s inception, and even more so now

that their Cambridge English classes offer the Dutch education community an opportunity to benefit from their expertise in teaching English.

BSN Language Centre Teaches Cambridge English to Local Teachers

Primary Education in the Netherlands is evolving and the

FORGING CONNECTIONS IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Creating a link to organisations where we live and work is beneficial to both the BSN and the Dutch community.

16

Follow us @BSNLangCentre

Page 17: Insight Summer 2016

increased demand for English to be taught at an earlier age is a sign of this evolution. Many Dutch teachers feel they lack the methodology to teach younger children. The BSN Language Centre is now offering a course, recently developed by Cambridge English, to support non-native English teachers in Primary Education: the Certificate in English Language Teaching – Primary (CELT-P). The very first group of teachers to follow this course is a group from De Waterwilg in Nootdorp. Teacher Maike Kouwenhoven, shares her views:

“The most important thing is that you create a big change in teaching English with this programme. There are a lot of teachers that are unhappy with the English teaching in Primary Education because they are insecure about their own level and capability. I had colleagues who

didn’t dare participate in the course, because of their own level of the language. But that is exactly the reason to participate! If you don’t, you will never be able to teach the students well.”

The Platform Onderwijs 2032 (a Dutch educational organisation established in 2014 which helps to determine what knowledge and skills children beginning school now will need for their future careers) has significant evidence indicating that English should be a compulsory subject in primary education, as it already is in Secondary Education in the Netherlands. Considering the importance of the English language, it is expected to have a more prominent and clear position in Primary Education moving forward, hence the need to intensify the offer of English in Dutch schools.

Dutch Paper Focuses on The BSN

The Dutch newspaper AD Haagse Courant recently featured The British School in The Netherlands, following an interview with our CEO and Principal, Kieran Earley. The feature highlights our ‘Internationally British’ curriculum approach and includes details of the work The BSN Language Centre is doing to support Dutch primary and secondary school teachers in The Randstad region to improve their English teaching skills. The Dutch Education Ministry is committed to increasing the use of English language in primary school children, and the BSN Language Centre is offering the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching qualification to support the teachers. Kieran Earley Joins the ICP Board

BSN CEO and Principal was recently invited to join the Board of the International Community Platform (ICP) in The Hague. This organisation aims to improve the working and living environment for the international employees and families in South Holland and thereby the investment climate for employers themselves.

Today the ICP is the linking pin between all stakeholders that wish to bridge the gap between international demand and local supply. ICP researches the wishes and needs of the international community and improves connections to create

opportunities for growth and a better living and working environment for the international community.

”Our involvement with the ICP contributes to the international dialogue within The Hague. It allows us to share our knowledge base in support of international business and what families want for their children. The ICP looks to remove barriers that prevent the progress within government, education and across all sectors. I am adverse to joining just any organisation, but the ICP provides us a great opportunity to bring about real change where needed.”

The British School in The Netherlands’ (BSN) Senior School has over 45 active student members in its ‘Ecological (ECO) Committee’ and they generate numerous proactive ideas to address various challenges within the context of the school’s resources and environment.

The ECO Committee has implemented numerous worthwhile projects including the implementation of an eco-garden and an allotment, plastic waste and recycling initiatives, and an energy conservation programme.

In October 2015, a volunteer parent, Chris Hart, engaged with students in the ECO Committee to advise the group and school on how new opportunities were identified, practical problem-solving techniques, implementation of long term solutions, and most importantly, how to celebrate success through student-lead initiatives.

Mr Hart has two children that attend the BSN so it was easy for him to facilitate and support taking the school to the next level of environmental awareness, whilst developing

the students through a learning objective. Based on the feedback, direction, enthusiasm and commitment of the students and the school, he had the idea to develop an environmental educational platform, the ECO Seek Foundation.

The Foundation is comprised of two award schemes: the International School Standard of ECO Environmental Knowledge 2030 (ISSEEK:2030) and the Individual Standard of ECO Environmental Knowledge (ISEEK) award scheme. The BSN now supports the programme and has become the first Founder Member School of the ECO Seek Foundation.

Mr Hart commented: “The leadership and students of The British School in The Netherlands have truly taken the environmental challenges

that we face seriously and will be the first school on the planet to integrate the new ECO Seek platform into their school culture.”

The award structure has been designed as a vehicle of change to facilitate, engage, and empower individuals and groups of young people within education through a structured approach.

“By creating these opportunities for young people to develop themselves by tackling real environmental global issues, we will naturally create heightened environmental awareness in students. The award structure will play a critical role in this development,” Mr Hart added.

Mr Kieran Earley (CEO & Principal of the BSN) commented:

“The British School in The Netherlands is proud to be a founder member school of the ECO

Seek Foundation. These principles underpin our ethos of cultivating environmental awareness not only in our students but within our surrounding community.”

About Chris Hart and the ECO Seek Foundation

Chris Hart has worked in many industries, cultures, and business sectors for over thirty years and is very passionate about the global environmental challenges that we face today. He has formed a non-profit organization to help and facilitate a practical, structured, improved educational platform through a continuous improvement process.

Earlier this term, the formal celebrations took place to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday in Windsor, England. Not to be outdone, the three BSN junior schools held their own celebrations to mark this special occasion.

At Leidschenveen, the ‘Queen’ made an appearance and gave the children ‘waving’ lessons and even joined the whole school

for lunch outside on the ‘Yellow Brick Road’. The children at Vlaskamp were extremely industrious making scones, crowns and flags ahead of their whole school garden party. Year 1 children made chariots for the royal corgis. Year 2 children thought about what they would do if they were Queen – their suggestions included sharing money for everyone and making

sure there is enough land for animals and humans to live together. At Diamanthorst, the children had been busy making bunting and decorated their school beautifully and organised a special birthday party complete with games and strawberries and cream. The whole school had their photo taken and wished Her Majesty a Happy Birthday at the tops of their voices.

School Britannia

The British School In The Netherlands (BSN) began from humble origins

when, in 1931, half a dozen children gathered in a single room in The Hague.

The school’s commitment to British educational values is as strong as ever

but today it occupies four sites on more than 50 acres.

Educating over 2,250 students from 85 nations, it is the largest British

international school in Europe and has hosted numerous royal visits over the

years. Her Majesty the Queen visited in 1958, and other royal guests have

included Princess Margaret, Princess Anne and Prince Edward. The British

Ambassador, Sir Geoffrey Adams, chairs the School Association and the

latest Junior School was opened in 2010 by Princess Máxima, the current

Queen of the Netherlands.

However, for all of its focus on Britain, the school is anything but insular,

priding itself on introducing different cultures to one another – to the

benefit of everyone. “It offers a wonderful opportunity to interact with

the world,” says CEO and Principal Kieran Earley. “The children discover

different outlooks and leave more tolerant and broader in vision.”

Lessons are in English but the stand-alone language school offers

mother-tongue programmes, while anglophone students learn other

languages, too. “It is absolutely not about indoctrination,” says Earley.

“We want students to value and share their cultural connections –

everyone here has something to offer.”

This inclusive attitude is replicated everywhere. “We want to educate

the whole child,” says Earley, “not at the expense of academic achievement

but in addition to it. We want our young people to be able to apply creativity

and thought to the world’s problems rather than just remembering answers.”

To this end, students are encouraged to participate in all kinds of activities,

from sports to debating to public service and creative pursuits. “In my 20

years’ experience,” says Earley, “it’s the active students who achieve the best

academically – not those who are never allowed to look up from their books.”

The school’s British label can be misleading: only a quarter of BSN

students are in fact British. “The concept of British education has changed,”

says Earley. “These days it’s about combining rigour, understanding,

tolerance and fun – it’s a unique system. And it works. The market is

choosing a British curriculum and British standards.”

The students’ creativity and independent thought is particularly

visible in their commitment to sustainability. “Young people here have

a real sense of their place in the world and their responsibility to it,” says

Earley. There are student-led eco committees, organising waste and energy

management, and Forest Schools, where younger children learn outdoors.

They camp with their parents in the school grounds. “There are even

beehives here,” says Earley, “where we produce our own BSN honey!”

No wonder the school was awarded the prestigious Eco Schools mark.

The BSN continues to grow. “We are not acquisitive but we are

ambitious for our young people and our staff,” says Earley. “That’s what

makes British education so attractive – it’s innovative, flexible, future-facing.

We have always served the international community in this part of world

and we will continue to do that. We have a moral responsibility to provide

the very best for those who want to learn here.”

Team Spirit wins out in Kazhakstan – COBIS Junior Games

In June our BSN junior athletes experienced an amazing few days competing at the COBIS Junior Games – a competition hosted by Haileybury Astana School in Kazhakstan.

The team travelled with PE teacher coaches, Howard Shore and Scott McRae, as well as Jess Apps and Junior School Vlaskamp Headteacher, Sue Aspinall who were thoroughly impressed by the spirit and determination of the team. Our children competed and mixed fantastically with the other students from 15 schools across the world,

making many friends along the way. What was particularly striking

was the encouragement they gave each other, even when competing against each other in the same event. During the swimming discipline, it was impressive to see Rafae Shafi competing to such a high level despite dislocating his knee cap less than two weeks before the tournament started.

As Howard Shore explains: “There were so many outstanding athletics performances it would be unfair to single anyone out – the whole team were setting personal bests and raising their levels far beyond their expectations. The level of skill and beautiful football played by our boys was the talk of the tournament. However, the way our girls team bounced back from

disappointment to win their last three matches, typified the resilience and fighting spirit of our whole team throughout the tournament.”

This year’s team brought home more medals than ever before (over 20), and won the respect and admiration of their competitors. The boys’ football team were the talk of the tournament with their silky skills elevating them head and shoulders above the rest on their way to winning the competition. No one left Kazakhstan thinking that they could have possibly put any more effort into the competition.

The BSN were 5th overall in the swimming, 2nd overall in the athletics, 1st overall in the boys football, 9th overall in the girls football and 4th in the overall competition.

NEWSAn Evening to Remember

Year 13 students and their families gathered at The Louwman Museum for a drinks reception, followed by the main event: the Year 13 Farewell Ball. The evening began with a farewell by both Head of Sixth Form, Kevin Sandeman and Headteacher Peter Simpson, and then the students were officially welcomed to the BSN Alumni Association. The highlight of the reception was no doubt the raffle for two lovely jewellery items, graciously donated by one of the evening sponsors, Marcel Vermeulen jeweller & goldsmith: a lovely necklace won by Sophie Bennett, and cufflinks won by Toby van den Bos.

The evening progressed with a wonderful buffet dinner, followed by dancing and Dutch snacks in the the Café area of The Louwman. The students and their families would like to thank the generosity of the sponsors who made this lovely location possible: Frits Taxi, ATC Travel, Sissinghurst Outdoor Furniture and especially Marcel Vermeulen who not only sponsored the evening but who also donated the lovely jewellery items for the raffle.

What ‘Sup’ with Rich Pleeth?

We recently connected with Rich Pleeth (Class of 2004) and he shared his professional journey which has brought him to launch the hot social app ‘Sup’ in 2015.

“I left the BSN in 2004 and went to the University of Birmingham to study international relations: I graduated in 2007 and went straight on the graduate scheme at L’Oreal and then was responsible for launching new products into the UK. I was then recruited by Google to lead on Chrome marketing, helping make Chrome the UK and world’s number One browser. I also brought to market Chromebooks and was responsible for Google Doodles.

I was then on the move again and was appointed Chief Marketing Officer at GetTaxi, leading their expansion and marketing around the world and raising their $150 Series D round of capital in August 2014.

In 2015 I had completed 74 flights as CMO at GetTaxi, and I found that I would always check-in on Facebook when i was in a new city or a new airport hoping that a friend would message me and tell me they were nearby. Sometimes it would happen, but usually two hours or two days later. I would then also

sometimes see on Facebook that friends were nearby as they posted a picture when I was home in London and we’d have missed out seeing each other. So the idea for Sup was born. I raised $1.1m from the founders of Innocent Drinks, founder of Zoopla and founder of Wahanda, Force Over Mass Capital in September 2015 – and then launched Sup. We’re growing fast and we’ve just launched our next fundraising round. Download the app and let me know what you think. Still managed to have a lot of fun outside of work, I’m a keen Kite Surfer (not a good one) and adventurer having been to 59 countries including North Korea and in 2012 finished the Mongol Rally in a Nissan Micra.”

We wish Rich all the best with his new app and we hope you all find a way to connect with it!

Making Music – Alumnus Kevin Doucette Shares with Students

Kevin Doucette (Class of 1998), Queen’s University, Canada and Berklee College of Music, is amongst our ex-BSNers who are

willing to give something back to the school in return for what they themselves received here. His visit to Senior School in June provided students a peek into the world of composing music. Kevin is an established figure in the world of composing music for movies and video games, for both the iconic AR Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire composer) and under Kevin’s own name. His newest project being released this month is music composition for the film Pele, about the football star of the same name.

Coming from a multi-city business trip, he was able to interrupt his busy routine and call in at SSV to give talks to Year 8 and Year 9 on the exciting, unreal, world of films, Golden Globes, Hollywood, Slum Dog Millionaire, and life in sun-drenched California. Not only was his talk stimulating and informative in itself – a delight to listen to, but he also gave the audience a number of hints and pointers worth knowing if they felt drawn towards a similar career path.

For any alumni who would like to support current BSN students, one of the best events for this is the BSN Careers Network Dinner scheduled for 23 September 2016 – read more about it on page 25.

Farewell… and Welcome to these New (Staff) Alumni

Saying goodbye to people who have served an important role in the shaping of our students is always difficult, but we also welcome them to the BSN Alumni Association as a part of their BSN journey. This year we see two faithful Headteachers moving on to new chapters, Peter Simpson, Headteacher at Senior School Voorschoten and David Porritt, Headteacher at Junior School Leidschenveen.

Peter Simpson

Peter Simpson started at the BSN in April 2009 – not an ordinary month for a Headteacher to begin – but it was in order for him to see through the March ISI inspection at his previous school. His first priority at the BSN was to then prepare for their ISI inspection in the autumn of 2009. It is quite remarkable that he will now be leaving the BSN at the end of a year in which we had yet another excellent ISI inspection.

Peter shares his thoughts on his time here:

“There have been many things of which I have been proud during my time at the Senior School but the students are always top of the list for me. Their amazing potential, willingness to support each other, the BSN world community and their resilience is something I shall remember from my time in the school.

There have been so many other highlights but all of these I hope have been driven by

improving the student experience. So the restructuring of the school day, the timetable, the exciting social spaces building project including the café, the introduction of the IB Career Related Programme, innovations in music and drama are just a few of the highlights. I have also loved teaching students in Year 13 in the school. From my perspective the teaching and non-teaching staff at Senior School are a fantastic team that make everything possible and the BSN a special place.

I intend to remain involved in international education but will look back at the Senior School with affection. I wish the BSN community every success.”

From overseeing significant capital projects, greatly enhancing the learning environment, to developing provision rightly judged to be excellent in all categories in our recent ISI report, Peter’s deep commitment and affection for the BSN community has taken the school forward in many ways. His leadership of the Senior School has driven up academic standards and extended opportunities for young people to experience the world. As a strong educational ‘system leader’, Peter has led and supported the professional development of colleagues within the BSN and internationally for many years. It is in this field that Peter has decided to develop his career further. Colleagues will miss his kindness, warmth and loyalty and we will all miss his presence around the school.

David Porritt

David Porritt joined the BSN in 2008 as Headteacher at Junior School Leidschenveen and was

instrumental in leading the then new JSL to success! Prior to that he was a Headteacher in Singapore. He and his wife Hilary, who has been a brilliant Maths teacher at Senior School will now be relocating to China, where David will be Headmaster at Dulwich College Suzhou.

David reflects on his time here at the BSN:

“As I come to the end of 8 amazing years as Head of JSL I can honestly say that there is not enough room in the entire edition of Insight for my thanks, let alone my thoughts and reflections. But, I would like to thank some people for what they have done from the days we were building the school to now. To our brilliant Board of Governors who unstintingly made sure that we had the best of everything to Dr. Coles and my Board of Management colleagues for supporting me and challenging me to be the best Headteacher I could be, to the best teaching and supporting staff anyone, anywhere could possibly wish for, to the most creative, exciting and thoughtful children you could possibly find and to a truly, wonderfully supportive and kind parent body. Never a day has gone by that I have not felt the privilege of being the head of the school or been amazed at the learning of our students. Being part of the BSN has been a highlight of my career. I have learned so much, benefitted so much and enjoyed being around our children each and every day.

Finally, may I make a special mention of Sam Mead, my first PA and Debbie Blanchfield, the second, to Jonathan Engleman our Lead Concierge and to Karren van Zoest my amazing Deputy and now, Head Designate and our superb link Governor, Thierry Guisan. I’m more convinced than ever that if we want to do well in our work we absolutely cannot do that without other amazing people around us. JSL – excellent in every category – achieved that phenomenal result because it is part of a family of schools, part of something bigger than itself and part of a community that cares. Thank you all.” In
