Inspirational shots and aspects of mise-en-scene

The Purge Election Year- 2016

This is a long shot using a wide camera angle, showing that it’s taken in a park and means that there is a lot of play within the shot, for example it is blurred around the edge focusing the viewers look in the center of the shot.The lighting of the shot is from behind the actors which creates a godly image and almost makes the people look angelic as they are hanging from the tree. The shot is mostly based centrally, with the tree in the center then with the three hanging body’s splitting the shot into thirds, the woman who looks like she is dancing in the foreground is placed left of the center creating an image of power, which is backed up by the fact she is torturing/ murdering the people who are being hanged. The costume design is used to make the people look pure as they are all dressed in white, this is relevant to the purge as it’s the one night where you are able to cleanse your soul. However the purging people have a pinkish tinge to their white outfits creating a feeling of deceptiveness and that they are not as pure as the outfits suggest.The shot is based in a park which is usually a happy child friendly place, however this signifies that no where is safe during purge night as the purgers are violating the child friendly area.

Jason Bourne - 2016

This shot is composed of a long shot with a wide camera angle which shows a full empty room. The camera is placed looking down on the room signifying that the person in the room is not there under his own will.The character is placed in the center of the shot which makes him the center of attention in the shot, it also makes him look neutral powerwise as he isnt in the left or the right of the screen.The costume design is also very neutral with just a gray t-shirt and jeans making him look like a normal person. The lighting in the room is very clinical and well lit everywhere which means you can see everything clearly and are able to distinguish that he looks imprisoned.The body language of the person in the shot is hunched over on a chair making him look bored and that he isn’t there on his own accord.The location choice creates a prison like making the person look trapped, however the large open room makes the space look more clinical suggesting that he has some choice in what happens next.

Captain America Civil War - 2016

This is an extreme longshot which opens the trailer of the film, the shot uses a wide frame at a high camera angle looking forward into the desolate distance, which may signify the bleak future to come. The shot is naturally lit the lightness is created from the reflection of the snow, but, the sky is quite dark which links into the desolate place where it’s filmed.The shot sets the scene for some of the film as it is based in the north of Russia. The shot is a flying cam which sets the scene.

The Revenant - 2015

This shot is composed from a medium shot with a large background making the shot seem epic. The shot is open framed with deep focus showing that the character is free to roam if necessary. The character is placed on the left of the shot which creates the feeling of power, this is backed up by him holding someone over his shoulders which suggesting that he is strong. The character is dressed in old fashioned clothes however he is wearing several layers suggesting he is in a cold harsh environment, this is backed up by the person over his shoulders shirt being soaked in blood enhancing the harshness of the environment. The shot is quite dark which could be to do with it being late or early in the day, another factor could be to do with the film being filmed on 35mm film which explains why it looks slightly grainy. The shot has been colour graded to pull out the blues creating a colder looking image. The facial expression shows anger and remorse looking into the distance at something we are unable to see in the shot.

Mad Max Fury Road - 2015

This a wide angle long shot, used to show a wide span of the moving cars and the actions being carried out by the characters. The framing is so you focus on the man jumping between the two vehicles. The costumes are minimal which mimics the hot desert environment, this is backed up as some of them are chained up leading to the impression they are slaves so they wouldn't own may clothes. The scene is well lit showing everything in focus, the colours used in this scene are mostly blues in the sky or orangy dirt colours from the sand. The body language of the characters is like they are attacking someone, for example they have their spears at the ready to throw. The location of this shot is important as without it there wouldn’t be the rusty sand clouds or the sand all over the vehicles, and it wouldn't match the rest of the film which is all based in the desert if it wasn't.

Reflection

I believe that I can use different aspects from these 5 shots in my own trailer, for example the lighting in the Purge shot may be useful to create a disorientated shadowy scene. I would use a similar flying pan shot to establish a location like in the Captain America shot. I could also use a similar camera angle and character placement in the Jason Bourne shot which would draw the viewer's attention to the center of the screen. I could also take inspiration from the Renovent, using a medium shot to show the clothes and facial expressions of the character which would help me portray a deeper more meaningful image.
