for the EU Information Society
• Inspiration– Presented to 2008 BASDA AGM– Highlighted the need to address Green– Identified the need for the software industry to engage– Sparked the work that has been undertaken to establish
the Green Charter and Support the implementation issues by addressing standards.

BASDA Green XML
• Objective - to define a data structure that supports the full scope of ‘green’ information
• Developed in consultation with expert groups over the past 2 years
• XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a set of rules for encoding documents electronically.
• Extension of BASDA XML standard – already used widely for data exchange between business system
• Supports (today):– Carbon footprints and offsets– Embedded/virtual water– eco-labels and certifications

• History- BASDA XML was one of the first to market in 1999
• BASDA Green and BASDA Utilities XML have a 2 year lead on any other standard
• Supports new Greenhouse Gas Protocol for Product and Supply Chain Carbon footprints that were only released last month
