When you think of New South Wales, chances are your first thought is of Sydney. Images probably spring to mind of that incredible harbour and those iconic structures that punctuate its shores. It’s an enticing destination and it’s also the gateway to some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia. Head inland just half an hour or so, past dusty paddocks sparsely stocked with funny looking sheep and houses tucked between the gum trees, and you’ll climb an escarpment that marks the start of the Blue Mountains. Australia’s colonial past is much in evidence in quaint towns like Blaxland and Leura, but so too is the more ancient, Aboriginal heritage. It’s the perfect region for a driving holiday, but there are plenty of other options too: head either north or south of Sydney and you’ll find uncrowded beaches and unspoilt coastal towns aplenty.
Fancy exploring one of the country’s great wine regions? Head for the Hunter Valley, just a couple of hours from Sydney, and if you’re not in any hurry take the inland route via the beautiful Hawkesbury River. Further north, Newcastle is the gateway to more spectacular coastline, including some of the best surf beaches in the world. It really doesn’t matter which way you head when you leave Sydney – maybe the best option is to simply go where the road takes you. Whichever direction you choose, you’ll find historic towns, varied wildlife, Heritage listed National Parks and a warm Aussie welcome.

Our favourite things to see & do
• PADDINGTON – Or `style mile’ as it is known, really comes alive with its famous markets held every Saturday from 10am-4pm. The market is a well established outlet for up and coming designers as well as jewellery, antiques, toys and collectables.
• SURRY HILLS – Has a colourful past as the centre of the fashion and publishing trade; now it’s one of Sydney’s most chic destinations, particularly renowned for its vintage fashion, homewares and eateries.
• BONDI TO BRONTE COASTAL WALK – This unique walk combines beaches, parks and spectacular views. Allow 1 hour walking time from start to finish. If you finish at Bondi, you may even see the world-famous Bondi Surf Rescue in action.
• SYDNEY FISH MARKET – Is home to Australia’s leading cooking school and is worth a visit just to marvel at the huge range of fresh seafood in every shape and size imaginable.
• BALMAIN – A short ferry ride from the city, with a village atmosphere and a great pub culture. It’s home to the artistic set where locally made art is a specialty, along with historic streetscapes, art galleries and stylish cafés lining the main streets.
SydneyIf you want to get a feel for Sydney, here’s a tip: buy a BridgeClimb ticket. From 134 metres up you can look down on The Rocks, where the original European settlement was started. Its haphazard alleys and streets now house a variety of stylish shops, gourmet restaurants and trendy bars. Now be brave and look out across that sparkling harbour where stately ferries, brash jet boats and busy water taxis share the water, past the gleaming Sydney Opera House and the vast Botanic Gardens. Let your gaze sweep to the CBD with its glass towers and enticing shops, then north, to where leafy hillside suburbs like Mosman sit, contentedly soaking up that Aussie sun. Finally, look inland across the suburbs, each a distinct ethnic village with its own culture, restaurants, shops and inhabitants. With all this on offer, it’s little wonder Sydneysiders feel a little smug about the place they call home.
Head over to Balmain on the ferry, it’s a colourful and artistic suburb.
If you love fresh seafood Sydney Fish
Market is a must.
Take a ferry ride on the harbour to see
the city from another angle.
The Paddington Markets are bursting with unique stalls.

Our favourite things to see & do
• CELLAR DOOR TASTING – With more than 120 wineries, the local specialties of Semillon and Shiraz can be sampled in many vineyards in the cellar or enjoyed in some superb vineyard restaurants. Some wineries also offer tours – Tyrrell’s and McGuigan Wines are two favourites.
• HUNTER VALLEY COOKING SCHOOL – This is a hands-on class, and all dishes are cooked from scratch using local organic produce. The recipes are provided to take home and the dishes cooked are eaten for either lunch or dinner – it’s a wine and food lover’s dream.
• THE VINTAGE GOLF CLUB – Tee off in style at this Greg Norman designed golf course, ranked among the best in Australia and measures 6,310 metres, with a par of 71.
• HARVEST TIME – Summer is a vibrant (and hot!) time of year. Spend the early mornings exploring the vineyards being harvested and the evenings at one of the many events, or cooling off around the pool with a glass of crisp Hunter Valley white.
• HUNTER VALLEY GARDENS – Ten stunning feature gardens set in over 60 acres: bask in the colour and scent of the Rose Garden where there are more than 8,000 roses on display; laze above the 10 metre waterfall and take in the superb views from the lookout; or hang out with all your favourite fairytale characters in the Storybook Garden.
• MAITLAND GAOL – This Gaol was closed in 1998 after housing some of Australia’s most notorious criminals for 150 years, it is now open to visitors. Take the self-guided audio tour, or for extra thrills, try the torchlight tour.
• NATIONAL PARKS – Surrounding the vineyards are national parks including the subtropical rainforests of Barrington Tops National Park and deep river gorges of Wollemi National Park.
Hunter ValleyIn the Hunter Valley, a region that extends inland around 150 kilometres from Newcastle, there are over 120 cellar doors where you can sample the best known product of this region. Wine isn’t all that the region is renowned for – you’ll have to find room for scrummy local produce that ranges from figs to fudges. There are also boutique beers to be sampled, dozens of great art galleries, craft and antique stores to peruse, and wine and cooking schools to attend (to ensure that you know what to do with all the goodies you’ve picked up along the way). The Hunter also offers award-winning spas and golf retreats in which to relax and unwind after the rigours of all that sampling, or you can simply sit back and soak up the scenery: acres of undulating vines, all hemmed in by the beautiful Brokenback Range.

Our favourite things to see & do
• DINING – There is plenty on offer for food lovers. Enjoy grazing on the amazing tapas selection at St Elmo, or eat your seafood as close to the source as you can get with a beachfront dinner at Fish Heads.
• BEACHES – Swim, surf or laze along the 30km of beaches that line the Byron coast. Main Beach and Clarkes Beach are the best patrolled swimming beaches near town, or venture a little further out and fire up one of the free barbies for a beachside picnic at Watego’s Beach.
• BYRON BAY MARKETS – Treat yourself to a little something made or bought from these markets. The community market happens every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, with arts, crafts, jewellery and skin care on offer, as well as plants and furniture. The farmers’ market is on every Thursday morning, offering fresh organic produce and a huge range of other locally produced goodies.
• CRYSTAL CASTLE – Venture into the hinterland to the Crystal Castle, where you can have your aura read, wander through the magical gardens or mystic statues, and marvel at the exquisite jewellery, crystals, books and treasures on offer. Indulge in the local produce and coffee as you relax and take in the hinterland views.
• CAPE BYRON LIGHTHOUSE – Take an early morning walk to Australian mainland’s most easterly point and watch the sun rise – the views are amazing and on a good day you can see the entire coast of Byron Bay. It’s popular with adrenaline seekers and you’re likely to see plenty of kites and kitesurfers. It’s also the perfect place to look out for dolphins, turtles, wallabies, and between June and November, humpback whales.
Byron Bay & SurroundsByron Bay is renowned for beautiful golden beaches, surf culture and a laid-back lifestyle that’s just a little bit hippy. Luxury resorts and fine restaurants sit alongside yoga schools and market stalls offering treats like locally grown organic coffee. With its handy location just an hour or so south of Gold Coast Airport, this colourful spot is easily accessible. Once you’re here, it’s a good idea to hire a car because as well as that spectacular coastline, you’ll want to head into the hinterland where you will find more stunning natural scenery including National Parks like Mt Warning and Mooball – home to such exotic-sounding species as the long-nosed potoroo and marbled frogmouth. As Australia’s most easterly region, Byron is the closest point to New Zealand – we should claim it for our own.

Touring by Rental CarChoosing your Rental Car
Take into consideration the size of the vehicle you require. If the vehicle is to be used for day touring from a central base and not for transporting your luggage, a smaller vehicle will be suitable.
However, if you’re going to be covering long distances then a 2 litre for two adults would be more suitable. We suggest you book your car before leaving home as this will save money and ensure that you get the car of your choice – there is a huge range of car types on offer from economy vehicles to SUVs and mini buses.

The Greater Blue Mountains Drive 2 days/1 night
Highlights worth seeing along the way
ORRIGO SKYWALK – Look down on the canopy from the stunning Skywalk boardwalk 70 metres in the air

Highlights worth seeing along the way
SCENIC WORLD BLUE MOUNTAINS – The Scenic Railway, Scenic Skyway, Scenic Cableway and Scenic Skywalk take you into the World Heritage-listed rainforest of Jamison Valley
JENOLAN CAVES – With 11 spectacular show caves, underground rivers and amazing formations these are among the oldest cave systems in the world
Heading north from Sydney along the Pacific Ocean coastline to Tweed Heads, this scenic drive takes you through some of the most striking landscapes in NSW. An almost continuous line of surf beaches, national parks and a hinterland of rolling green hills and friendly villages make this a great drive. There are plenty of attractions, adventures and fun along the way.
Day 1: Sydney – Port Stephens Head to The Entrance, one of the prettiest towns on the Central Coast. If you happen to be there on time, check out the famous pelican feeding, held at 3:30pm each day. Then travel through Newcastle on your way to Port Stephens, known for its great dolphin and whale watching opportunities (seasonal). Walk to the top of the headland for some incredible photos of the bay.
Day 2: Nelson Bay – South West Rocks Make your way to historic Port Macquarie and stop for a seaside lunch break and walk along the breakwater or stroll along the stunning Town Beach or Lighthouse Beach. South West Rocks is just an hour from here and is a sleepy coastal retreat at its barefoot best.
Day 3: South West Rocks – Coffs Harbour Visit Dorrigo National Park before making your way back to the coast to vibrant Coffs Harbour. The coast that sweeps north and south along the Coffs Coast has amazing beaches to suit all tastes – sandy bottomed point breaks, protected coves and harbours.
Day 4: Coffs Harbour – Byron Bay Make your way to riverside Grafton, famous for its jacaranda trees, and take a walk through the historic streets. If you need to make a pit stop, Ballina is a great choice with plenty of stylish cafés lining the streets. Drive inland to Lismore, home to more artists and buskers per capita than anywhere else in Australia! Kyogle, 30 minutes away is a pretty place surrounded by rainforest and with two heritage-listed national parks nearby. Once you arrive in Byron Bay you can relax at the beach or if you’re feeling energetic take a walk to the Byron Bay Lighthouse – Australia’s most easterly point – for amazing views.
The Greater Blue Mountains Drive includes discovery trails that branch off the main route, taking you off the beaten track. The common link is the network of national parks and conservation areas that make up the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. This is just an idea for a short break in the Blue Mountains.
Day 1: Sydney – Leura Head through the pretty towns of Faulconbridge and Hazelbrook and continue to Wentworth Falls. Offering spectacular views over the Jamison Valley and excellent trails into the Blue Mountains National Park, Wentworth Falls is a great place to stop for a walk through the bush and some excellent photo opportunities before continuing on your way. Drive to lovely Leura and take some time to peruse the shops, galleries and craft stores on the charming tree-lined main street, and then stop for lunch in one of a number of gourmet cafés. It’s just a short drive to neighbouring Katoomba with its historic buildings and antiques stores, and Echo Point where you can view the incredible Three Sisters rock formation from the lookout, or get a different view from Scenic World’s railway, walkway, skyway or cableway.
Day 2: Leura – Sydney Take the leisurely Bells Line of Road back to Sydney, and maybe try some of the 18 discovery trails to explore the wilderness further. Drive about 40 minutes north to Hartley Vale – here you’ll find a quaint historic village, along with the remnants of early roads over the Blue Mountains, dating back to the early 19th Century – some of which have now been incorporated into walking tracks. Continue to Mt Tomah through the heart of the Blue Mountains, passing the tiny town of Bell. Drive directly to the Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens and view over 5,000 species of cool climate plants before making your way leisurely back to Sydney.
This is a suggested Self Drive itinerary and is to be used in conjunction with a road map.

Day 1: Sydney – Hunter Valley Travel the scenic route via Wollombi Village to the Hunter Valley. First stop, Hunter Valley Visitor Information Centre in Pokolbin where you can pick up a visitor guide and maps. Then you’ll be set to visit a number of local food producers to sample fresh handmade cheeses, olives, jams, pickles or honey. Before you check into your accommodation, take time to stop into a winder/cellar door and enjoy your first Hunter Valley Semillon or Shiraz. Buy a bottle or two to take back to your hotel to enjoy.
The Hunter boasts over 60 restaurants and eateries and has fast established itself as one of Australia’s outstanding culinary destinations – a fine dining experience is a must while you’re here!
Day 2: Hunter Valley Start the day with a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the vineyards, a great way to get a real feel of the lay of the land. Then it is time to get amongst the vines on a vineyard tour to discover what winemaking is all about and learn the processes involved in getting the fruit from the vine to the table! Then it’s time to put this new-found wine knowledge to the test with a visit to some local cellar doors to find your favourite drop. There’s also lots of boutique shopping villages in the Hunter where you can pick up local produce. From degustation menus and romantic dining to tapas and casual pub meals, it’s all on offer. So enjoy some local produce paired with some fantastic local wine.
Day 3: Hunter Valley – Sydney If you’re a golfer you might want to tee off at the 18 hole Greg Norman designed Vintage Golf Course, or pamper yourself at one of the relaxing day spas. Before heading back to the city a stop at the Hunter Valley Gardens is well worth it. Spanning over 60 acres there are ten stunning feature gardens.
This magnificent stretch of coastline is one of Australia’s most dramatic and naturally beautiful self-drives. The waters of the Pacific, Tasman and Bass Strait have carved out dramatic headlands and created beautiful coves and beaches. Nestled amongst these natural wonders are dozens of quaint fishing villages, hamlets and thriving rural towns.
Day 1: Sydney – Jervis Bay Take the scenic Grand Pacific Drive to the coastal city of Wollongong, pass through beautiful Kiama and Gerroa before arriving in Jervis Bay.
Day 2: Jervis Bay – Narooma Jervis Bay is well known for its resident dolphins and amazing white sand beaches. Stop for lunch at Batemans Bay, before making your way to the coastal village of Narooma.
Day 3: Narooma – Mallacoota Visit Central Tilba with its array of arts & craft stores before travelling along the beach road to Mimosa Rocks National Park for a picnic and swim in the lagoons before you cross the border into Victoria.
Day 4: Mallacoota – Metung Head to Cape Conran Coastal Park before you reach Lakes Entrance, a picturesque holiday town and fishing port. Stay in stylish Metung with its great choice of restaurants.
Day 5: Metung – Wilsons Promontory Call in at Yarram for lunch on the way to Wilsons Promontory National Park, Australia’s southernmost point, famous for its wild beaches and mountain views. Choose from the many walks and look out for kangaroos.
Day 6: Wilsons Promontory – Phillip Island Stop for coffee at Fish Creek, a tiny township alive with arts, crafts and cafés, then cross the bridge to Phillip Island – don’t miss the daily dusk parade of little penguins as they parade up the beach.
Day 7: Phillip Island – Mornington Peninsula Make your way back across the bridge to Mornington Peninsula, where you can go for walks, dine in excellent restaurants and taste the regional wines on offer at over 50 cellar doors.
Day 8: Mornington Peninsula – Melbourne There are plenty of cute towns to explore on the peninsula as you make your way back to Melbourne, just over an hour away.
This is a suggested Self Drive itinerary and is to be used in conjunction with a road map.
