I t’s the year Old Blighty sheds its reputation for drab dry cucumber sandwiches and crowds of corgis, and takes on the title of the zestiest event

capital for 2015 – it is the Year of the Sheep, after all.

With the anniversary of the signing of the

Magna Carter, Agatha Christie’s would-be 125th

birthday, summer events like the Chelsea Flower

Show and Wimbledon Tennis Championship, and

the eagerly anticipated Rugby World Cup, this

is one hell of a calendar of events showcasing

England’s best.

Feast your eyes on this entree of events

coming to an England near you…

LONDON SERVES AN ACEWimbledon bursts with life from late June to early

July for the world’s favourite tennis Grand Slam.

Year on year masses flock to London’s southwest

to watch the tennis superstars battle it out for

the top spot.

You don’t even have to be a tennis lover to

enjoy this sought after event; people watchers,

fashion gurus and sun-seeking locals are all found

buzzing in and around the grounds. Sip bubbles

courtside and tuck into the traditional juicy

strawberries and cream.

THE ANNIVERSARY OF A SIGNIFICANT SIGNATURE2015 marks 800 years since King John’s humiliation

and the subsequent signing of the Magna Carter,

the 'Great Charter' on 15 June at Runnymede.

This gave life to the concept of individual

rights, which was a significant turning point in

England’s history. From March to September there

are hundreds of events in the works.

See Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth as she

attends the celebrations as Patron in Runnymede,

watch a play at the Globe Theatre featuring

King John or visit one of the remaining original

copies of the document itself at the Lincoln Castle,

which has been restored for the occasion.

19 TEAMS, 13 VENUES, 1 TROPHYOccurring just once every four years, this sporting

event will bring official-shirt wearing, face-painted,

effervescent fans from around the world in their

thousands for rugby’s greatest tournament,

the Rugby World Cup 2015. From 18 September

– 31 October we will witness how nothing divides

England, Australia and New Zealand quite so

much as the promise of tries, penalties and upsets.

And with the All Blacks facing down the prospect

of being the first-ever team to win three titles,

the rivalry will be fiercer than ever.

With sports, literature, politics, and royal baby

#2 on the way, England has everything you could

want in a holiday – and everything you need

for a pub quiz!

Amalfi Coast Delight

N o matter which way you turn, Italy is awash with activities and adventures worthy of any traveller’s bucket list. Fall head over Italian-

ONE BIG BUCKET LISTLake Como, Maggiore and Lugano sit in the north, surrounded by rugged mountains and terracotta-coloured villages – and perfect for a secluded romantic getaway or scenic hiking experience.

Further south, not too far from Naples, is the

Amalfi Coast. Indescribably beautiful, the region

is a bright watercolour painting come to life,

where centuries-old homes and storefronts cling

to steep cliffs, all competing for the best view

of the sparkling blue, endless ocean.

Rome, Venice and Florence almost need

no introduction for their international allure,

while smaller hillside towns such as Montalcino

and Perugia offer all the culture and flair of the

bigger cities without the hustle and bustle.

The UNESCO World Heritage site, Cinque Terre

may be short on sandy shores, but it’s long on gravity-

defying villages built right into the rocky cliff sides,

mixing charming pops of architectural colour with the

ruggedly beautiful coastline that Italy does so well.

Between Verona’s architecture, Pompeii’s

M agic hangs in the air in Scotland, even heavier than the rain it’s famous for. From bagpipe melodies to haunting

lochs and the grand castles dotted throughout

the countryside, this country is bewitching – and

that’s before you’ve even tasted the succulent

local seafood sensations! Head to this lush, misty

and magnetic wonderland and fall under its spell.

PAMPER YOUR PALATE Scotland celebrates 2015 as the Year of Food and

Drink, and what a great excuse to indulge (as if you

needed one!). To get the best of Scottish fare, look

out for certified 'Taste our Best' eateries, as these

guarantee a minimum of 40 per cent local Scottish

produce. From the freshest fruits and vegetables to

juicy cuts of meats, you’ll find delicious nourishment at

places like Guy’s Restaurant & Bar in Glasgow and the

Tower Restaurant & Terrace in Edinburgh. Here, you’ll

know what you’re feasting on is proudly Scottish!

For sublime seafood, head to the country’s west

coast. Savour fine dining on mussels, oysters, salmon

and other marine delights complemented by views

of rugged, dramatic and perfectly pristine coastline.

Add the finishing touches to your meal by heading

across the nation, taking in diverse landscapes

from undulating green hills to expansive empty

grass moors, in search of the perfect cheese.

Local producers of the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth

treat are scattered throughout the countryside.

Watch, and taste, handmade Anster cheese

being made at the St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese

Company in Fife, where you can take in astounding

views of beautifully still, calm lochs and quaint

countryside, contrasted by sheer cliffs and wild oceans.

BOTTOMS UP: IT’S TIME TO TASTE THE WHISKYNo country does whisky like Scotland. After all, it’s the

country’s national drink and one of its most famous

exports. The Speyside area is so famous for its whisky,

it’s practically swimming in it, hosting more than half of

Scotland’s malt distilleries. Visit the Speyside Cooperage

and get a glimpse how this amber beverage is

traditionally made before sipping on its strong bite

yourself. You can even brew your own mini cask!

BAGPIPES AND CHEDDAR TO TARTANS AND WHISKY, THE LAND OF BRAVEHEART WILL WIN OVER YOUR TASTEBUDS AND FILL YOUR STOMACH… BUT STILL LEAVE YOU HUNGRY FOR MORE.

ANCESTRAL LINKS, DRAMATIC SCENERY AND MAGNETIC MUSIC – WATCH OUT FOR YOUR LUCKY SHAMROCK WHILE

DANCING YOUR WAY AROUND THE EMERALD ISLE.

V isit Ireland and it will remain tattooed upon your heart and soul forever. The locals are as warm, friendly and hospitable as the music is magnetic, and what’s more, there are strong ancestral links to New

Zealand. Countless Kiwis flock to Ireland to find out more about their heritage, getting swept up in its other charms in the process.

Take your own personal pilgrimage to this picturesque nation and savour every experience, whether it’s sampling genuine Guinness or watching colourful, dramatic sunsets over small coastal villages. Buckle up, you’re in for a real treat.

STORY-TELLING SCENERY & LUSCIOUS LANDSCAPES Rugged, powerful, untouched, raw – these are some of the words commonly used to describe the country’s landscapes. Ireland’s scenery is so alluring, devastatingly beautiful and ripe for storytelling that it has attracted film-makers for decades. Its vast empty beaches and seaside villages formed the backdrop for the Academy Award-winning film Ryan’s Daughter in 1970, and today modern epics include Game of Thrones, Miss Julie and the Dracula Untold.

Hosting lush green lands of County Fermanagh, the mysterious basalt formations of the Giant’s Causeway and the haunting historic atmosphere of Killiney Castle, it’s no surprise these film’s embraced Ireland’s enchanting environment. Hop in a car and take a drive, whether to the eerily romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle or the misty peaks of the Wicklow Mountains.

THE MAGIC’S IN THE MUSICYou’ll never be short of new friends in Ireland. Whether you’re in a big city like Dublin or a small village in the countryside, there’s a pub that will welcome you with open arms, genial locals and heart-drumming music.

Pay a visit to the historic Sin É pub in Cork, which has entertained and embraced music lovers since 1889. Settle in amongst its intimate, homely decor and feel your heart soar with the joyous melodies of traditional Irish music. To enjoy more authentic Irish rhythms, head to the Curragower Bar in Limerick’s cosy and cobbled Medieval Quarter. The old-worldly tunes turn back the hands of time as you take in striking views of King John’s Castle and other historic buildings.

Doolin village in County Clare claims the title of Ireland’s traditional music capital, with delightful pubs that serve up live music year-round. One of Ireland’s best musical events, the Russell Memorial Weekend, takes place here every February to celebrate the inspiring legacy of Micho Russell, a world-famous traditional Irish musician.

Did you know the legendary musician Van Morrison was also born in Belfast? Soak up his musical heritage by walking the Van Morrison Trail and seeing the places that inspired him. Head to Orangefield Park, made famous by his love song of the same name, or see the primary school where his talent began to emerge. One thing’s for sure, you’ll be dancing to the Emerald Isle’s intoxicating beat in no time!

architectural gems, such as the exquisitely elegant Grand Theatre and impressive Cathedrale Saint Andre. It’s also the perfect place to indulge some of the country’s sinfully delectable wine – cheers to that!

Visit one of the few hundred wine châteaux peppered throughout the area, such as the Château La Louviere, a beautiful stone estate with historic lush green grounds. Château Lascombes is another sumptuous destination, with the gorgeous 17th century estate covered in green, gold and red crawling vines.

BON APPÉTIT! Sink your teeth into treats like hand crafted artisan bread and creamy soft cheese every chance you get (which is more often than not). Savour heavenly specialty dishes from different regions such as Lyon, in the Rhône Valley, which is arguably the country’s

gastronomic capital. Take a cooking class at the Delicieusement Votre, where you can sharpen your patisserie and vegetable cutting technique and discover how to cook with paté, wine, lobster and truffles. Divine!

Head to the locally known bistro, Bouchons, and savour a pork dish, smoked caviar or Lyonnaise salad. Or if you’re up for some fine dining, treat yourself to a royal night out with a reservation at the La Mère Brazier. With two Michelin stars, you know the blue lobster or poached roasted chicken will be a meal your taste buds won’t forget!

TALES OF TRAGEDY & TRIUMPHFrance is alive with history that dates back as far as pre-Roman times. You can gaze upon 36,000-year-old cave paintings from the Pont-d’Arc Decorated Cave in Ardeche, marvel at medieval gems such

TRAVELLERS CRAVE CROATIA L IKE JEWELLERS COVET DIAMONDS. THE INDULGENT INLANDS, VIBRANT ZAGREB AND SPARKLING COASTS ARE THE JEWELS OF THIS NATION.

C roatia is the glittering gem in the Adriatic crown, shrouded in mystery and draped with intrigue. This central European country

has an undeniable attraction that can result in

the most severe cases of wanderlust.

ZIG ZAG THROUGH ZAGREBCroatia’s capital, Zagreb, offers the ultimate fusion

of romantic historical architecture and modern

comforts. In its particularly enchanting old town,

Gornji Grad, take the iconic blue rail car 66m uphill

to the 13th century Lotrscak Tower and catch the

daily firing of the Gric cannon at noon. Spend a

day or two in Gornji Grad, dining in cosy tapas

bars, pubs and cafés, and diving into the history

at St. Marks’ Church and the Zagreb City Museum.

Then there’s Donji Grad – the Lower Town,

which offers a platter full of architecturally

awe-inspiring and action-packed activities.

Start in the city’s centre at the Ban Josip Jelacic

Square for everything you could want in shopping

and sightseeing.

MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY COASTZagreb and Dubrovnik are the beating heart of

Croatia, but the inlands are where you’ll find this

country’s soul.

Untouched by the outside world are many of

Croatia’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Plitvice Lakes

National Park is packed with lush green forests and

rushing waterfalls in summer and frozen fortresses

through winter. Then there’s Stari Grad Plain, the

best-preserved Greek cultural landscape in the

Mediterranean, with its endless vineyards and olive

groves still producing exquisite olive oils and wines.

Buckle up for a self-drive holiday and zoom

along the 130km/h motorways or slow down for

the epic scenery of the coastal roads. Or, give

yourself the opportunity to keep your eyes on the

vistas with a train ride through the beautiful country.

AHOY THERE, CAPTAIN!Blessed with almost 6,000km of Dalmatian

coastline of pure blue waters and pale golden

sands, the islands of Croatia demand to be visited.

Keep a keen eye on the offers available, as

some cruise ships are vintage, wooden vessels

that look fantastic but may not always be the right

option for your needs. Stay on idyllic Pag Island for

the best of the beachside island or on the coast

in historic Dubrovnik for the rush of the city.

Croatia is a supermodel of the travel world

– it simply doesn’t take a bad photo. This treasure

of the Adriatic is truly a charmed paradise, so go

and live your fairy-tale in this picture-perfect gem.

GERMANY AND SWITZERLAND... MORE THAN JUST BEER AND CHOCOLATE.

I magine journeying through captivating medieval towns, mysterious forests and crisp white snow-capped mountains. Prepare to swoon and make

this daydream a reality when you venture into the very essence of central Europe, namely the nations of Germany and Switzerland.

TAKE A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANEDelve into the fascinating history of Germany and Switzerland and unlock the secrets of the past by visiting medieval cities. In the German town of Rothenburg, wander down cobbled lanes lined by beautifully preserved buildings from the Middle Ages. From gorgeous old creaking homes to dimly lit taverns and the grand 12th century castle, you’ll feel like you’ve been cast back in time.

Lining the upper end of Lake Zurich is Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland. This old-worldly town treats you to breathtakingly beautiful lake and mountain views alongside striking historic castles, churches, chapels and monasteries.

You can also pay your respects to a darker time in history by visiting the sombre sites of Dachau Concentration Camp and the Jewish Museum Berlin.

A DOZEN LANDSCAPES IN A DAYGermany and Switzerland know variety is the spice of life when it comes to their luscious landscapes, making it easy to discover vastly different vistas in a short period of time. Luckily, it’s easy to travel by driving or by rail, just make sure you get a scenic pass for trains to catch the captivating views.

Venture to Germany’s enchanting Black Forest, home to thriving nature parks Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord and Südschwarzwald. Stretch your legs on an array of hiking trails through the lush bushland or walk the slopes of the looming Feldberg, Schauinsland and Hornisgrinde mountains. Hornisgrinde soars 1,493 metres high and promises absolutely stunning panoramas of the region. Immerse yourself in the natural environment one moment and in a quaint Black Forest village such as Altensteig the next.

In Switzerland, enjoy the lively, charming streets and tranquil, glassy waters of Lake Lucerne, then travel to the mountains to gaze at the remarkable alpine views. Visit the top of Europe with a trip up the icy Jungfraujoch, where the world’s highest railway station stands proud at 3,454 metres above sea level.
