When an elephant talks, everyone listens!
President’s
Corner
Greetings everyone! I love that we are finally having some sunshine and warm weather. Spring
will soon be here in full force! Stock up on your allergy medication.
I wish to express my sincere thank you to everyone who participated in our St. Patrick’s dinner.
Nancy Jarvis and Sharon Calvert did a marvelous job of putting the entire event together. Eve-
rything ran very smoothly and the food was delicious! Thank you also to all the elected officials
who served dinner to us. A special thank you to Senator James Settelmeyer as our auctioneer.
Thank you to Commissioner Dave Nelson who spent the entire day in the kitchen cutting cab-
bage and onions and helping with the vegetable cooking. Have you dried away the tears Dave?
There were so many people who helped and I’m afraid I may forget someone, so, thank you all
for helping us raise money for those running for elected office next year.
Our next meeting of Sierra Nevada Republican Women is April 12 at Carson Valley Inn. Please
make your reservations early with Jacie Peters, [email protected]. so you are eligible for
our free lunch drawing. Our speaker is Eileen Rice, a former ER nurse and now a Credential
chair for the state. I look forward to seeing you there.
Here’s wishing you all a very Happy Spring.!

Meet Your Officers
Treasurer—Jacie Peters
Jacie assumed her second full term as Treasurer of Sierra Nevada Republican Women in December. She
was appointed to the role in 2015, replacing the previous Treasurer who became ill. She graciously
stepped in and in no time at all had mastered her new role. Jacie has done a masterful job of keeping our
records straight and our Club in the black, submitting reports to the State of Nevada, as well as NvFRW.
She attends all meetings and events, takes RSVP’s, checks people in, and collects money. She works
closely with Membership to keep all records straight.
Jacie has a BA from Whittier College and a Master’s in Public Health from Loma Linda University. She
was an Executive Director for a 210 bed residential care facility in California, and then moved on to run
her family’s termite and pest control businesses in 11 states. She quit working when she got married, and
went back to work when her husband retired. She is currently working at Joe Benigno’s Tree Service.
Jacie is a licensed termite inspector and fumigator. She is a licensed private investigator. And, she is a
Notary. One very busy woman!
Jacie and her husband, Bill, and their two Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers (aka terrorists!)
have lived in Minden for the last 6 years, relocating from northern California.
THANK YOU
A great big, huge, enormous, gigantic THANK YOU to all who participated in making this year’s St. Pat-
rick’s Dinner such a tremendous success. We couldn’t have done it without our enthusiastic members. We
applaud those who donated to the raffle and auction, those who bought tickets and bid on items, those who
bought dinner tickets and brought friends, those who set up and tore down the tables, the decorating com-
mittee (chaired by Diane Carroll), the cooks, the servers, and the clean-up crew. Wow—so many thank
you’s.
It is very risky to single out individuals, but there are a few who deserve a little extra pat on the back. Mike
and Mary Porter were the first to show up and last to leave and helped in every aspect of the event, as well
as storing the ten large boxes of St. Patrick’s items in their garage every year. Very close after, Commis-
sioner Dave Nelson showed up and spent the whole day in the kitchen doing whatever was asked of him
(including chopping 15 lbs. of onions). Pat Smith, borrowed and lugged several LARGE Pots and coffee
urns and spent the entire day in the kitchen. Barb and Don McRoberts were also all-dayers stepping in
wherever needed (and helped with the food purchase). Jack Calvert , Mike Porter and Bob O’Berg spent
hours slicing the 55 corned beef roasts. And, of course, our favorite Auctioneer Extraordinaire, Senator
Settelmeyer, helped bring in a healthy profit to the event.
Bottom line…..Thank you all for contributing to our $5787 profit. FANTASTIC!

Recommended Reading
Constitution Committee—Mary Porter
Over the next few weeks and months you will, no doubt, read about and hear about lots of
Constitutional issues as Judge Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation hearings go forward. This may
inspire you to read The Constitution: An Introduction by Michael Stokes Paulsen and his
son, Luke Paulsen, Basic Books, 2015.
This is a very a good book that your Constitution Committee has recommended once be-
fore. A lot of information is contained in the book’s 352 pages. We were joined in our rec-
ommendation by Justice Samuel Alito. In addition, this book has received a number of
other favorable reviews. Reviewers uniformly describe the book as clearly written, even-
handed and reader friendly:
“[The authors] begin by setting out the document’s framework and comment
incisively on the novel concept of a written constitution deriving its authority from the
people, ensuring checks and balances by separating power among the federal
branches, while at the same time preserving state prerogatives. They move on to a
careful, Article-by-Article explication of the respective powers of the federal govern-
ment’s three branches and a detailed treatment of the Bill of Rights . . . No important
case goes unmentioned, no significant crisis or controversy unexplored.”
(Kirkus Reviews, March 2015)
Our Constitution is a first. At the 1787 Constitutional Convention delegates put down in
writing the powers and limitations of government. The interpretation of our Constitution by
Supreme Court Justices over the next 4 years was an issue of crucial importance to a ma-
jority of voters, and one that lead to the election of President Trump.
Judge Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s initial Supreme Court nominee, recently received a
unanimous “well-qualified” rating by the Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary of
the American Bar Association. This is the highest rating that the ABA can give a judicial
nominee. Never the less, Democratic leadership has made it clear that they will attack him
during confirmation hearings as being “no friend of the little guy.” (New York Times, March
13, 2017).
Your Constitution Committee thanks those who already have already passed along their
reading recommendations. We look forward to receiving more recommendations from
more of you.
