Saturday 29 November: Islamic Geometric Design: Sixfold PatternsLearn how to make and understand patterns from Cairo, Istanbul, Delhi, Baghdad. Sixfold patterns can be found across the Islamic world, across the centuries. There is great diversity in sixfold patterns in Islamic art and architecture. Because of the way they are constructed, they offer great opportunities to develop creativity. They all start at the same point: the division of a circle into six equal segments.

Saturday 13 December: Islamic Geometric Design: Fivefold PatternsLearn how to make and understand patterns from Isfahan, Konya, Agra, Cairo. Fivefold patterns are considered to be the most challenging and rewarding of all the geometric patterns in Islamic art and architecture. They have different rules than, for example fourfold and sixfold patterns, and understanding how they are constructed has fascinated people for a long time  All fivefold patterns start at the same point: the division of a circle into ten equal segments.

Author and artist Eric Broug has studied Islamic geometry for over 15 years and has an MA in the History of Islamic Architecture from SOAS. He has specialised in the history of Mamluk architecture and Muqarnas in Cairo, and received a British Museum scholarship award in recognition of his research.

“Geometry enlightens the intellect and sets one’s mind right. All its proofs are very clear and orderly. It is hardly possible for errors to enter geometric reasoning because it is very well arranged and orderly. Thus the mind that constantly applies itself to geometry is unlikely to fall into error...” Ibn Khaldun, Arab Muslim Historiographer and Historian 1332-1406 AD
