We all know that people look different. Our history is full of examples of how those differences have forged cultural identities, as well as how they’ve split societies apart. But what story does modern science tell us? It’s never been more important to learn.

In RACE: Are We So Different?, students will explore the biology, history, and contemporary lived experience of race and racism in the

United States. They’ll discover what race is – and as importantly – what it isn’t. Pair your visit with the Race to the Finish Line Science Live show and make it a powerful, in-depth exploration that will have a lasting impact on students of all ages.

To help your students get the most out of their visit to RACE, we’ve put together an educator guide that includes a thorough exhibit overview, as well as pre- and post-visit activity ideas and educator resources. Visit smm.org/educatorguides to check it out.

Ideal for students in upper elementary, middle, and high school.

RACE: Are We So Different? Exhibit and Program PackageOCTOBER 11, 2018 – MARCH 14, 2019 Thursdays & Fridays | Ongoing Exhibit

“The Race Exhibit was a wonderful learning experience for my students and families. Race can be a difficult topic to discuss but the museum was intentional in providing strategies to approach the topic and demonstrated how it could be achieved through a dialogue/ interactive activity with actors! WE ARE THANKFUL AND PLAN TO EMBED THIS FIELD-TRIP INTO OUR LIFE SCIENCE CURRICULUM NEXT YEAR AS WELL.”

2018 is the Year of the Engineer at the Science Museum, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with the Dream Big: Engineering Our World Omnitheater film.

In Dream Big, your students will meet four people whose paths have been shaped by engineering: a geotechnical engineer who develops ways to minimize the trauma that natural disasters can exact; a structural engineer who builds bridges connecting third world communities to life-giving resources; a modern-day time traveler who studies ancient structures for clues to solve today’s engineering challenges; and a environmental engineer who draws on her high school robotics experience to develop clean energy solutions. Their stories, told unforgettably on the Omnitheater’s giant screen, show viewers of all ages that we all have the power and potential to solve tomorrow’s problems with science.

With a full slate of supporting materials to help you connect your visit to the classroom, Dream Big shines a spotlight on the possibilities of engineering in our rapidly changing world.

Learn how you can apply for a 2018 Year of the Engineer Scholarship to bring your students to see Dream Big. Visit smm.org/educators/field-trips for more information.

Filmed in 18 countries across all seven continents, Living in the Age of Airplanes will make the most of the Omnitheater’s 90 foot domed screen to show your students how the airplane has profoundly changed the world.

Not so long ago, traveling between continents was a migration. Now, on any given day, 100,000 flights transport people and products between any two points on Earth in a matter of hours. The airplane may be the closest thing we have to a time machine. See how far we’ve come – and how fast we got there – in this giant screen tribute to one of the most extraordinary and awe-inspiring inventions in the modern world.

The Omnitheater has been taking viewers to places they’ve never seen before for a quarter of a century. That tradition continues in spring 2019, when Cuba makes its Omnitheater debut. Your students will take a giant screen journey to this mysterious southern neighbor, witnessing the resilience and determination of a remarkable island nation through the eyes of a historian, a ballerina, and a team of scientists.

Take a giant screen journey south to meet the people who are committed to restoring Cuba’s rich architectural heritage, which dates back to the 16th century. Meet a student at the Cuban National Ballet School, the largest ballet school in the world. And dive deep into Cuba’s coral reefs, which are the healthiest of any Caribbean nation, with a team of marine biologists. What is it about the island’s history that contributes to this environmental success story?

Through incredible historic photography and modern-day giant screen footage, this new film will lift the veil on this world unto itself – a rarely-seen nation of history, art, and science.

Ideal for all ages.

Year of the Engineer continues this fall with The Machine Inside: Biomechanics, a hands-on exhibition that invites your students to explore animals and plants as sophisticated machines built for survival – complete with pumps, pipes, insulation, motors, springs, and intelligence gathering devices.

Using real specimens, life-like models, amazing video footage, and interactive displays, Biomechanics investigates how cheetahs run so fast and fleas jump so far; how the bite force of an extinct fish made it a top predator; how a Venus fly trap detects its next meal; and how many other organisms function as machines in order to survive, move, and discover.

By delving deep, speeding things up, slowing things down, and presenting the inner-workings of plants and animals, Biomechanics will give your students a new appreciation for the machine inside all living things.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 18% of American adults live with mental illness – and nearly half of all mental illness symptoms appear before the age of 14. In order to build better lives for those who live with mental illness, we must understand that mental illnesses are common, they can affect anyone, and they are treatable.

This fall, give your students the tools they need to talk about a topic that touches our lives each day in the Mental Health: Mind Matters exhibition. Together, you’ll explore the ways mental illness has been treated in the past. You’ll get a taste of what it might be like to live with mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. And you’ll find valuable resources to help you better understand your own mental health and support those with mental illness who are close to you. Join us as we make it okay to talk about mental health.

Our SciEd team has assembled resources to help you connect your Mental Health: Mind Matters visit to the classroom. Visit smm.org/educatorguides.
