Love Bites Year 10 students as part of our whole school well-being plan, participated in an educational program called Love Bites. Love Bites is a school based Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault prevention program. Love Bites is based on best practice standards for education programs as recommended by the Fed-eral Government. Male and female facilitators pre-sent the program as a team and Love Bites models respectful relationships between male and female students, teachers and workers. The artworks and other work created in the creative sessions are the basis for local campaigns to challenge violence against women in our community.
We have another new baby to welcome into our farm family. He is a Speckle Park and his name is ‘Rocky’. He was born on Thursday morning to ‘Pearl’.
RRISK (Reduce Risk, Increase Student
Knowledge) RRISK Day was a day I and the rest of Year 11 thor-oughly enjoyed. Paul Dillon’s knowledge on all things dangerous about drugs and alcohol far surpassed any persons in the room. The facts and figures shown to the students were jaw dropping and the anecdotal stories just amazing. The students learnt many lessons in life especially with the driver’s seminar. We learnt about distractions and hazards when behind the wheel. We were also given information about pitfalls and things to watch when pur-chasing a car. The last speaker was a man named Michael who had been in a car accident while driving drunk, without a seatbelt and without a licence. Michael is now in a wheelchair; he has brain damage and needs constant care. He was a vibrant, independent and popular ado-lescent until his accident. Now he has a carer with him 24/7, he has to have constant physiotherapy so his limbs don’t waste away and over the years his friends have stopped visiting. Michael’s efforts to speak to the students was inspiring and took lots of courage for someone in his position to do. Thanks to Mrs Varley, Mrs Helliwell and Miss Birney for taking us. From the Principal Dear parents and carers Today we held our Years 10 and 11 Formal Academic Assembly. It is always just so impressive to see the large number of students who end up receiving recognition for their outstanding academic achievements during the year. Congratulations to all our students for their hard work and commitment. Other areas that students were awarded today include for leadership, team work and citizenship. This week I met with two ex-teachers of Richmond River High, Janet Sherrin and Barbara Kearney who met with me to give us some very good news. They indicated to me that Richmond River High School has been left a significant amount of money in the wills of another two ex-teachers, Peter and Margaret Carr. The bequest is over $900,000. Peter and Margaret both started teaching at Richmond River High in 1961. Peter was an English teacher and Margaret a Home Science teacher. They have left an amazing legacy to the students at this school. A committee will be formed to manage the legacy that will comprise of parent and community representatives. Each year five Year 12 students will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship to help out with university costs. Year 12 students will be given the opportunity to apply for the scholarships based on the criteria established by the committee. This is a 20 plus year legacy to the school. Dave Harvey Principal
From the Deputies Next week is a busy week with several ‘End Of Year’ excursions taking place. These excursions are a celebration that the end of the school year is approaching. We would like to ensure that the events are fun and safe for every student. With that in mind it is important that all students attending act responsibly and follow all of our positive behaviour expectations. Mr Harvey, Mrs Williamson and myself will be attending these excursions and hope to see all of the students enjoying themselves in a manner that represents the school appropriately. Make sure that you pack water, sunscreen and a hat. Looking forward to seeing you on the excursion! Next Tuesday we also have our Junior Academic Awards Assembly at which there will be a major prize draw. Get your Gotchas and Merits in to be in the draw for some terrific prizes. Auditions for lead roles in the Rivers Secondary College Production of 'Aladdin' are on the 4th December at City Hall. For our Year 9 students who are on excursion that day there will be alternative rehearsals held in the River Theatre on Friday 5th from 9 a.m. Audition packs are available from the front office. Looking for a 'Different' School holiday activity in Sydney.
Take the kids to see The Magic Flute these school holidays 2-30 January 2015 |
Sydney Opera House Opera Australia's The Magic Flute is a great introduction to opera. Di-rected by Julie Taymor (Disney’s The Lion King), this production is full of colourful, larger-than-life pup-pets, enchanting special effects and fantasy characters. This is a shortened version performed in English – ideal for families and chil-dren over 8 years. Puppet-making workshops be-fore or after the show on 10, 15 and 17 January. Children will learn how to make their own fantastic puppets inspired by Flute characters, which they'll be able to take home. Opera Austral-ia’s expert puppeteers will teach them techniques used by Taymor herself, and all materials will be supplied. Visit opera.org.au to book tickets to the opera and workshop today.
