World changing for over 550 years
Overthelastfivecenturiesandmore,theUniversityofGlasgowhasconstantlyworkedtopushtheboundariesofwhat’spossible.
We’vefosteredthetalentsofsevenNobellaureates,onePrimeMinisterandScotland’sinauguralFirstMinister.We’vewelcomedAlbertEinsteintogivealectureontheoriginsofthegeneraltheoryofrelativity.Scotland’sfirstfemalemedicalgraduatescompletedtheirdegreesherein1894andtheworld’sfirstultrasoundimagesofafoetuswerepublishedbyGlasgowProfessorIanDonaldin1958.In1840webecamethefirstuniversityintheUKtoappointaProfessorofEngineering,andin1957,thefirstinScotlandtohaveanelectroniccomputer.
TheUniversityofGlasgowhashelpedfosterthetalentsofsomeoftheworld’s
greatestthinkers,innovatorsandleadersofalltime.LordKelvin,AdamSmith,JohnLogieBaird,JamesWattandDavidLivingstonarejustahandfulofthehundredsofworld-changersthatdrewinspirationfromtheirtimehereinGlasgow.
Andthatlistofpeoplegrowslongereveryday.Fromgroundbreakingresearchinthefightagainstcancer,tointernationalpartnershipstobuildcapacityinsub-SaharanAfrica,wearecurrentlyworkingonprojectsattheUniversitytodaythatwillchangetheworldoftomorrow.

ThehistoricandtransformationalopportunitytoredevelopthecampusisasimportanttotheUniversity-itsstaff,studentsandalumni-asthemovetoGilmorehillwasin1870.
Overthecomingmonthswelookforwardtosharingwithyoutheexcitingnewinitiativesthecampusredevelopmentwillenable.Aswellasspacefornewfacilitiestosupportourgroundbreakingresearchinfieldsfromsyntheticbiologyandquantumtechnologiestotropicalmedicineandpublichealth,thestudentexperiencewillbeattheheartofallwedo.Theredevelopmentwillincludethestateoftheartteachingfacilitiesourstudentsneed,aswellasprovidinganenvironmentthatisopenandaccessibletothewidercommunity.
In1870theUniversityofGlasgowrelocatedfromtheHighStreettoGilmorehillinthewestendofthecity.
Themodernfacilitiesthatwerebuiltatthattime,includingtheGilbertScottBuildingandtheiconictower,haveprovidedalegacythatweenjoytothisday.
Thesefacilitieshavehelpedtosupportthelast150yearsofknowledgecreationandscientificadvancement,andweremadepossiblebyaphilanthropiccampaignandthegenerosityofagenerationlookingtothefuture.
Wenowstandatanothersuchpointwherewewillbeabletomakeequivalentprogresswiththehelpofouralumni,friendsandsupporters.Thankstoourpurchaseofaround15acresoflandonwhatiscurrentlytheWesternInfirmarysite,theUniversityhasauniqueopportunitytore-shapeandtransformthecampustoprovidemodern,fitforpurposefacilitiesthatareinkeepingwithGlasgow’sstatusasaworldleadingresearch-intensiveUniversity.

Thenewcampusdevelopmentandexpansioninvolvesahugescaleofinvestmentinbuildings,facilities,staffandscholarshipsoverthenext10years.Ourinvestmentandcampaignwillfocusonthreestrands:
