hen conceptualizing her Lake Ozark home, Margo Arauz wanted to go for the

unexpected. The custom-built home was built from the ground up, giving her the chance to play off of all of the design elements she loves. Margo embraced the authenticity of her style, by mixing classic and rustic accents into the overall modern feel of her home.

As you step onto the lakefront property, you are greeted by a lovely fish pond accompanied by water lilies, a wooden bridge, and a pair of great, wooden doors that give off a cozy feeling. When it came to the entry way, Margo liked the idea of a bridge. She wanted it to be more than just a door. She wanted a real entryway.

group of 17 courageous people from Philadelphia stepped off the last steamboat of the season at a site that resembled their own Rhine Valley.

With terrain too steep to farm, the hardworking Germans covered the hillsides with vines ripe enough to make American’s finest wine.

And so it is today. Hermann, Missouri, just an easy 90 minute drive from the Lake of the Ozarks. One of

Its old-world charm, world-class wineries, and easy going style is a must see year in and year out.

While October is the most popular time, my recommendation for you is try spring. The crowds are less, the B&B’s room rates are extremely affordable, and the tasting room pace even slower. Giving you and yours time to truly appreciate the wines and the people.

One of my favorites is Stone Hill Winery, owned by the Held family and under the steady hand of award-winning

wine maker Dave Johnson, has earned seven Missouri Governor’s Cups since 1994. Using French-American hybrid grades, their white wines are second to none. Their red, Norton grape wines are also magnificent.

Listed on the National Historic Register, Stone Hill’s tasting room and Vintage restaurant are must sees.

Also within 10 minutes of Stone Hill are the Hermannhof Winery (owned by the Dierberg family) and Adam Puchta winery. Both outstanding in their own right and must visits while in town.

and has two upcoming events, the Chocolate Wine trail (third week in February) and the Wild Card Wine Trail (first week in May). This spring, there is also a Wurstfest in March, Shelbyfest in April, and Maifest in May.

But my recommendation is to try Hermann for the first time on a weekday between now and the end of April. The vine’s buds break open and the hillsides come alive. Splurge on one of the cottages at Hermann Hill or those managed by the Inn at Hermannof. A couple days in this hidden jewel on the Missouri River will keep you coming back year after year.
