Indy out of GSW Sahara Gold (Seeking the Gold), at Monday’s opening session of Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent for Stonerside Stables, hip 136 , a grandson of GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Desert Stormer, brought $3.1 mil- lion. He’s one of the best physicals in the sale and he’s been bred by one of the leading breeders in Kentucky and one of the best farms in Kentucky. When you get down to it, when you’re looking to buy the very best, he’s a horse that has to be on your short list. Sheikh Mohammed just felt that he was an exceptional individual and was very keen to buy him.” Stonerside’s John Adger could well understand the Sheikh’s enthusiasm. “We just always thought he was an absolutely wonderful individual,” he remarked. “We’ve been very fortunate with him. Bobby Spalding and the guys at the farm did a tremendous job getting him ready for the sale and, of course, Lane’s End did a wonderful job selling him. We’re tickled to death that Sheikh Mohammed bought him and we wish him the very best with him.” As for the eyecatching sales price, Adger said, “I’m not going to tell you the reserve, but it was much, much lower than what he brought. He was always a smooth, athletic individual from the time he was a foal. We love this family.” (cont. p2) SWAN SONG By the time the final horse of the session walks into the ring at most sales, many buyers have already gone off in search of dinner. The Feb. 25 foal is a three-parts brother to Belterra, a daughter of Unbridled who won the GII Golden Rod S. at two and was third in the 2002 GI Ashland S. and GII Bonnie Miss S. “I thought we’d have to pay that much for him. “A.P. Indy was more of a masculine horse, while Seek-ing the Gold was a tough horse, but a tad more femi-nine. Hopefully he’ll be a champion.”

Top Cat... Hip 187, a filly by Storm Cat out of the winning mareWarm Mood (by Alydar) realized the top price of thesession for her sex when John Ferguson, who signedthe ticket for Sheikh Mohammed, went to $1.7 millionto acquire the bay. “She’s just an attractive filly,” saidFerguson. “She was one of the most outstanding filliesI’ve ever seen here. The mare has proven it. She hadthe winner of the [1999 G3] Norfolk at Royal Ascot andwe were very keen to have this filly.” In addition to herGroup winning and Group 1 placed half brother WarmHeart, the Mar. 3 foal is a full sister to Royal Tigress, winner of this year’s Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial."That's just about what we thought she'd bring, be-tween one and two [million]," said Bill Farish of Lane'sEnd, who consigned the filly. "She's a very attractivefilly with very good knees, which not all the Storm Catshave. We're just very thankful."

Unbridled Enthusiasm... Gaines-Gentry, Rancho San Miguel and Twin Creeksbought Cruising Haven, carrying this foal, for $600,000at the 2002 Keeneland November sale and the maredropped another colt by Unbridled’s Song this winter. Inaddition to Belterra, the 16-year-old mare has producedRoyal Haven (by Hail Emperor), winner of 19 starts, including the GII Fall Highweight H. and GII GeneralGeorge H. “I knew he was going to sell very well,” saidan emotional Olin Gentry of Gaines-Gentry, who bredthe horse in partnership with Twin Creeks Farm andRancho San Miguel. “It’s extremely gratifying to raise ahorse like that.” According to Gentry, the colt is thehighest-priced yearling he has ever sold. Also flush fromthe big score was Paramount Sales’ Pat Costello. “Well,he was a lovely horse, wasn’t he?” said Costello. Whensomeone asked where Gentry was, Costello deadpanned,“I don’t know--he’s probably washed out completely bynow. I’m not sure if he’s still alive or not.” Costello washigh on the horse coming into the sale, but admittedthat the figure was more than he expected. “I thoughthe’d bring over a million, but after that, you never know. He’s a beautiful horse and didn’t turn a hair all week.”

What They’re Saying At The Sales...

Skara Glen Strikes Back... Skara Glen Stable’s Ira Gumberg, sitting beside hisfather Stanley and trainer Michael Matz, went to $1.5million to secure hip 39, a filly by 2000 Kentucky Derbywinner and promising freshman sire of this year FusaichiPegasus. Consigned to the sale by Michael C. Byrne, agent, the dark bay filly had a busy morning yesterdayas she was shown to several would-be buyers. A May15 foal, she is a daughter of the 21-year-old mareGolden Oriole (Northern Dancer), who has had successwhen bred to Mr. Prospector-line stallions. She producedGISP Devonwood to the cover of Woodman in 1994 andmore importantly Castle Gandolfo when mated withGone West in 1999. Hip 39 is a three-parts sibling tothe latter, who died last week in South America. “She’sjust beautiful,” Ira Gumberg commented, adding thatMatz, who advised on the purchase, will train the filly.“She’s a very athletic filly and has a great pedigree.”For the Gumbergs, victory yesterday was sweet. SkaraGlen was the immediate underbidder on Windsharp, who sold at last year’s November sale for $6.1 millioncarrying a full sibling to Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Johar.“It feels good to get one,” Gumberg admitted. “Once ina while, you get one, sometimes you get outbid.”

Evans Weathers the Storm... On three previous occasions, Edward Evans bred hisPennant Fever (Seattle Slew) to Storm Cat and eachtime the results have been sensational. The offspringhave included MGISW and millionaire Raging Fever,GSW Stormin Fever and MGSP Roaring Fever. Yester-day, Evans gave buyers the rare opportunity to buy intothis tremendous family, but ultimately decided that itmade more sense to hang on to hip 112, signing thewinning ticket at $850,000. The dark bay, consigned byLane’s End, is the last foal from Pennant Fever, whodied this past March after a three-year battle with lam-initis. “It’s been great fun to breed and race this familyand since the mother died this year, I thought I’d goahead and keep her,” said Evans, who explained thatthe filly was part of a foal share agreement with Over-brook Farm. “Hopefully she’ll do as well as the others.”

Off and Running... Monday’s opening session of the September YearlingSale got off to a steady start with across the boardincreases in gross, average, median, while the numberof yearlings which did not find takers decreased from70 last year down to 49 this term. “I thought it was anexceedingly solid sale,” said Geoff Russell, director ofsales. “I thought the consignors went in with a veryrealistic mindset and set reserves that reflected themarket very well. Having the median increase 17 per-cent is very positive and we’re delighted that we in-creased the average. Having increases last year, wedidn’t expect that this session would increase thatmuch, but we’re delighted that it did.” Eight yearlingsrealized over a $1 million this year, while 10 surpassedthat standard during the same session last term. Ac-cording to Russell, things can only get better during thesecond session. “We might have a couple of more big-ger items,” explained Russell. “There are a couple ofcolts that might top [today]. We always go into it beingmore optimistic than [Monday], so we’ll continue to doso.”

Reynolds Bell, Jr., bloodstock agent “[The sale] looks good to me. It looks real good. TheA.P. Indy, for example, was a really nice colt and I thinkthe price they paid for him was indicative of the marketfor the nice horses. It feels like a good sale.”

Eric Anderson, advisor to Stanley Fulton “I think Mr. Fulton is very happy with what he pur-chased today. I think we’re getting good value for hisdollars. I think the market is very spotty; the sale’s gota lot of ups and downs. We seem to be on the righthorses and we’re getting our numbers. I think TeamFulton is very happy with what we’ve done today andhopefully we can continue it into tomorrow.”

Buzz Chace, bloodstock advisor “I think it’s been very good today, very strong. Mr.Jones has bought some nice horses, but we were alsooutbid on a very nice horse [session topping colt by A.P.Indy], but that colt richly deserved to be the topper. Theupper end of the market is good, it seems to be holdingup very well and I think there are a lot of people whoare happy.”

    P AT KEENELAND TODAY P

Doubly Blessed... The mystique of the 2000 GI Kentucky Derby winnerFusaichi Pegasus has extended well past the track andinto the auction ring, where kin to the striking dark bayhave set the sales board alight. The story began withthe Danzig mare Angel Fever, who Stone Farm andStonerside Stable teamed up to buy for $525,000 atthe 1994 KEENOV sale. That turned out to be a bargainwhen her fourth foal, by Mr. Prospector, made $4 mil-lion at the 1998 KEEJUL sale before going on to Derbyglory as a horse known as Fusaichi Pegasus. A fullsister, Blissfull, previously a $1 million KEENOVweanling, subsequently sold for $4 million at 2000KEENOV, while another full, Bless, equaled that popularprice tag in 2002, selling to ClassicStar in foal to StormCat. Hip 455, a bay colt selling this afternoon, is theresulting offspring. “He’s a real strong-looking yearling,”said consignor Taylor Made’s Duncan Taylor of the Mar.24 foal. That colt may play the closer to hip 442, athree-parts brother to Fusaichi Pegasus by Seeking theGold selling just 13 lots earlier. The colt is consigned tothe sale by Stone Farm, who also consigned FusaichiPegasus. “Well, we’ll just wait and see,” said a relaxedHancock yesterday morning. “We’ve gotten a lot oflooks so far. Physically, he is a lot like Fusaichi Pegasus. He’s not as big as him, but they really resemble eachother and this one’s got a lot of presence.” Hancocksaid the choice to go to Seeking the Gold, one of Mr.Prospector’s prolific sons at stud, was an easy one.“That nick has worked, producing a Derby winner wholooks like he’s going to be a leading freshman sire,” hesaid. “It’s a classic ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’”

Blue Lightning... The folks at Matagorda Farm don’t consign many tothe September sale, but they make it count when theydecide to send a yearling over from their base inGeorgetown, Kentucky. Last year, it was a striking,well-muscled chestnut son of Storm Cat out ofBluemamba (Kingmambo) from their draft that led theTuesday session, drawing a $2.6 million offer frombloodstock agent Demi O’Byrne. This year, they hopelighting strikes twice when they lead into the ring anA.P. Indy colt out Bluemamba, heroine of the G1 Pouled’Essai des Pouliches [French 1000 Guineas] in 2000.Hip 456 is the second foal from the seven-year-oldmare, who hails from the family of Irish champion andemerging sire Orpen and the ill-fated Jules, sire of PeaceRules. “He’s a bit more racy looking than the Storm Cat,with nice bone,” explained Matagorda’s “Bootie” Young.“But they are both big, good-looking horses.”Bluemamba didn’t produce a foal in 2004 and is back infoal to Storm Cat.

Another Dandy Danehill... It seems a match made in heaven. Danehill, one of theworld’s most important sires until his untimely demise inMay 2003, bred to the late Prince Fahd Salman’s Fiji(GB) (Rainbow Quest), who won five of her first sixstarts after her arrival in the United States, capped by athree-length success in the GI Gamely Breeders’ Cup H.She would conclude her season with a score in the GIYellow Ribbon S. and was named champion turf mare of1998. Retired the following year, she was bred in 2000to A.P. Indy and foaled a filly in 2001. She slipped hernext foal before being mated to Danehill and was of-fered for sale at the 2002 Keeneland November Sale, where she was knocked down to Brushwood Stables’Betty Moran for $3.1 million. The resulting foal, a coltconsigned by Eaton Sales as hip 264 carries the highhopes of his owner and consignor into the ring thismorning. “We raised this colt and everything about himsays racehorse,” said Eaton Sales’ Reiley McDonald.Added Mrs. Moran, “He’s a very, very nice colt and Ithink there’s a lot of interest in him.” Bred on the samecross that produced this year’s G1 Epsom Derby winnerNorth Light (Ire), the Apr. 7 foal is the lone offering forhis sire in the sale. Danehill will be represented by hisfinal crop of yearlings in 2005.

About 15 minutes later, Rule ofLaw stood triumphant in the winner’s enclosure afterturning in another of his doggedly determined efforts, this time over a distance of one mile six furlongs and132 yards. Rule of Law started co-favorite for the St Leger, sothe betting public obviously weren’t too worried that hewould fail to last the extra 572 yards he had to tackleat Doncaster. Their faith in him was based on hisstrong-finishing second in the Derby and his all-the-wayvictory in the Great Voltigeur S.--performances whichshowed that this son of Kingmambo stayed much betterthan anyone could have predicted from his bloodlines. At the end of last year, the Timeform writers simplystated that Rule of Law “stays 1m,” clearly reluctant tosuggest that he would be suited by longer distances.(cont. p9)

And who could blame them for their reticence?Kingmambo never tackled more than a mile, while hisbrother Miesque’s Son excelled at shorter distances, and their dam Miesque spent most of her career at amile. Although Kingmambo’s sire Mr. Prospector occa-sionally sired horses who stayed much better than hedid, he normally needed more help from the mare thanMiesque was able to give. It is a similar story with the bottom half of Rule ofLaw’s pedigree. His dam Crystal Crossing gained heronly success over six furlongs at two in England beforebeing switched to the U.S., where she raced creditablyover 1 1/16 miles. She was followed two years later byher sister Circle of Gold, winner of the G3 Prestige S.over seven furlongs in England before scoring over 11/8 miles at Belmont. What’s more, Crystal Crossing is by Royal Academy, who gained his finest win in Europe in the July Cup oversix furlongs, and her broodmare sire is Never So Bold, another July Cup winner. Never So Bold was no doubt chosen as a mate forRule of Law’s third dam, the Irish 1000 Guineas winnerFavoletta, because he was a son of Bold Lad (Ire).Favoletta had visited Bold Lad earlier in her career, toproduce the spectacularly fast Amaranda, winner of theG2 Queen Mary S. over five furlongs at Royal Ascot.Amaranda’s classic-placed half sister Favoridge alsopossessed plenty of speed, even though she was by theKentucky Derby and Belmont S. winner Riva Ridge. To sum up, none of the six horses in the first twogenerations of Rule of Law’s pedigree stayed muchbeyond a mile and an eighth. And if you trace his femaleline back a few generations, you will find that his fifthdam is Urshalim, a very speedy filly who needed adownhill track to last six furlongs, and his sixth dam isHorama, who once held the track record for five fur-longs on the sharp Chester track.

    Defying the Law..

So how come Rule of Law stays so well? My guess isthat the explanation lies mainly in the fourth generationof his pedigree. This includes two lines of NorthernDancer, with one line notably coming through his StLeger-winning son Nijinsky II. Two of Nijinsky’s sons,Niniski and Caerleon also sired St Leger winners, and sodid Northern Dancer’s sons Sadler’s Wells (twice) andNorthern Baby. In addition to Northern Dancer’s double presence, the16 horses in this generation include Nashua and ProveOut, who between them collected three victories overtwo miles in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Also presentare Native Dancer, who lasted a mile and a half wellenough to win the Belmont S., and Crimson Satan andBaldric, both winners over a mile and a quarter. I suspect that we shouldn’t underestimate the contri-bution of Kingmambo’s second dam Pasadoble, whofigures alongside Nijinsky II in the third generation ofRule of Law’s pedigree. Although Pasadoble was asuccessful miler, she was bred to stay well. In additionto having a two-mile winner (Prove Out) as her sire, shewas out of a mare by Sanctus, winner of the FrenchDerby and the 15-furlong Grand Prix de Paris. Also,Pasadoble’s dam Santa Quilla was a half sister toComtesse de Loir, who twice reached the first three inthe Arc. Perhaps it is this latent stamina which has occasion-ally helped Kingmambo sire horses which stay a gooddeal further than he did--horses like Lemon Drop Kid,King Cugat and El Condor Pasa. Indeed his outstandingrecord this year shows that he is capable of siring justabout everything from a fast two-year-old, such as thePrix Morny winner Divine Proportions, to a mid-dle-distance stayer of Rule of Law’s ability. In betweenthese two extremes are Russian Rhythm (JuddmonteLockinge S. over a mile) and King Kamehameha (Japa-nese Derby over a mile and a half).

Kingmambo’s 2004 stakes winners also include themile-and-a-half Listed winner Alkaased, who, like Ruleof Law, has a son of Nijinsky II as his broodmare sire.Nijinsky himself is the broodmare sire of the exceptionalRussian Rhythm and another Nijinsky mare, Far Beyond, ranks as the second dam of those talented brothersParade Ground and Parade Leader. Parade Ground’swins included the GIII Lawrence Realization H. over amile and a half, which shows again that blendingKingmambo with Nijinsky offers a good chance of amiddle-distance performer. With four Group 1 winners to his credit this year,Kingmambo is thoroughly justifying his 2004 fee of$225,000, the only drawback from an American view-point being that so much of his recent success hascome on turf. Will this turf bias effectively put a cap onhow high his fee can rise? I rather doubt it, especially asKingmambo looks sure to provide some of this week’shighlights in the Keeneland ring.

STEADY AS SHE GOES For the last five years in a row, John Ferguson Blood-stock has been the leading buyer at the KeenelandSeptember Sale. After yesterday's opening session, inwhich Ferguson signed for 19 horses for a total of$14,435,000 on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed-- 23 per-cent of the session's gross--there seems little dangerthat he will not emerge as the sale's leading buyer forthe sixth consecutive year. Interestingly, though, for thelast four years the top colt has been bought by DemiO'Byrne for the Coolmore crowd. At close of businessyesterday, Ferguson had bought the highest colt--ormale, should I say the $3.1-million ridgeling (which thepros now dismiss as unimportant) by A.P. Indy. Demipaid $2.8-million for the very last horse in the ring, a$2.8-million colt by Unbridled's Song. Since the wordon the street all along has been that today's session isbetter, expect some big fireworks--especially toward thesecond half of today's session, in the 400's. I'll be sur-prised if there isn't a $5-million colt today.

Four buyers--Europeans Ferguson, Demi, andShadwell, and top American buyer Tim McMurry, forStan Fulton, combined to buy 43 yearlings for$29,535,000, an average of $686,860. Together, theyaccounted for 47 percent--nearly half--of yesterday'sgross. About a third of their buys were by five sires, who among them accounted for 44 percent--nearlyhalf--of yesterday's gross. A total of 49 yearlings byStorm Cat, A.P. Indy, Kingmambo, Giant's Causeway, and Fusaichi Pegasus sold yesterday (29 percent of the170 yearlings sold). Storm Cat was the session's lead-ing sire, with six sold of eight offered, averaging$966,667--but another four were scratched. A.P. Indyhad 10 through the ring, but only six sold, averaging$887,500. Kingmambo sold nine of 10 offered, averag-ing lowest of the five--$322,778--well below the ses-sion average. But expect a big day from him today.Unbridled’s Song, who ended the day on a high notewith the second-highest priced yearling of the session, had seven of eight sold, averaging $737,142. Giant'sCauseway had 17 sold of 21 through the ring, grossingover $8.5-million, and averaging $501,176; seven ofthe 17 made $500,000+. Fusaichi Pegasus sold 11 of12 and nearly matched Giant's Causeway's average; hiswas $483,636. Top North American second-crop sireForestry had an overall good day; just six of nine sold, but those that did averaged $460,000, including twoexpensive colts bought by Ferguson, and another byEugene Melnyk.

Following the sophomore’s half-length defeat of Norse Dancer (Ire) in Saturday’s G1Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown, trainer John Oxxhighlighted the Newmarket equivalent as the mainoption. “A strongly run 10 furlongs is probably per-fect for him, so obviously the Champion S. will be inour minds, but the situation should be clearer in thenext couple of days,” Oxx told the Post. “The Breed-ers’ Cup is also still a possibility, and the Turf wouldbe one of the races under consideration, but whetherwe would want to step him up to a mile and a halfthis year is another matter.”

VINNIE ON COURSE FOR FOURTH LEGER Con-nections of Vinnie Roe (Ire) (Definite Article {GB})have reported the six-year-old on course to try for afourth consecutive victory in Sunday’s G1 Irish StLeger at The Curragh. Despite finishing runner-up onhis two starts so far this term, the six-year-old wasreported “fine” by trainer Dermot Weld’s son Markyesterday. “I’m walking the Curragh every day and itis very firm at the moment,” he told Irish Racingonline. “He will appreciate any ease we get and, withan unsettled forecast, we will hopefully get beautifulground.” Weld also revealed that the 2002 G1 Mel-bourne Cup winner Media Puzzle (Theatrical {Ire})may join his stable companion if the Kildare venueavoids extreme going. A idan O’Brien has eight stillentered, headed by last year’s G1 St Leger winnerBrian Boru (GB) (Sadler’s Wells).
