Serial Number Verification for InstallShield

Verification is a quick and anonymous process that confirms the authenticity of your copy of InstallShield. This is done to protect you from the adverse effects of pirated software. The process also checks that the serial number that you are using has not been used to verify InstallShield on more systems than allowed by the InstallShield End-User License Agreement (EULA).

Verification is a one-time process that involves following a series of easy steps to verify your InstallShield serial number, usually through the Internet (or offline, through email). You enter a serial number, which is used to authenticate the InstallShield license, thus unlocking the product. No personal information is required, and the entire process takes just a few seconds.

Overview of the Verification ProcessThe serial number verification process requires just a few steps. No personal information is captured or transmitted during the process.

When you start the process, an online verification is first attempted. If the online verification does not succeed, you are given the option to retry an online verification or verify offline through email.

Task To verify your serial number for InstallShield:

1. Launch InstallShield.

Before InstallShield starts, the splash screen for the verification wizard is displayed. If you have more than 5 days left in your trial period, the splash screen automatically disappears after a few seconds.

If you have 5 or fewer days left in your trial period, the splash screen remains, requiring you to click before you can proceed. If your trial period is not over, you can click the Try hyperlink on the splash screen to use InstallShield without verifying it.

2. Initiate the verification request.

Page 6: Install Shield Verification User Guide

Chapter 1: Serial Number Verification for InstallShieldEvaluating InstallShield Before Verification

When you are ready to proceed with verification, click the Own hyperlink on the splash screen. InstallShield displays a dialog that requests the serial number. Enter your serial number, and then click the Verify button. The verification wizard transmits the verification request.

For online verification, the wizard sends a license request, which consists of some verification request text, a serial number, and other non-personal information, to a verification server. If online verification is unsuccessful, the verification wizard enables you to use the offline method. With the offline method, you send to Acresso Support an email message with the request text that the wizard displays.

3. The verification request is processed.

Online verification: When the server receives your verification request, it validates the request. If the verification request is deemed successful, the server automatically transmits the verification response text to the verification wizard that is running on your machine.

Offline verification: Acresso Support emails the verification response text to you.

4. The response text is processed.

Online verification: The verification wizard receives the server’s response and immediately verifies your serial number for you.

Offline verification: After you receive the email message from Acresso Support, copy the response text from the email message and paste it into the response text box in the verification wizard. You can enter the verification response text immediately or at a later date. The wizard verifies your serial number.

Verification is a one-time process. Once you have completed verification, the verification wizard is no longer displayed when you launch InstallShield.

Evaluating InstallShield Before VerificationIf you have not purchased a license for InstallShield, you can still install InstallShield and use it for a limited number of days without performing serial number verification. When you run InstallShield in this trial mode, all of its features are fully available. The splash screen that InstallShield displays whenever you launch InstallShield in trial mode shows you how many days are left in your trial period. In addition, the About dialog box in InstallShield shows the number of days remaining. To access the About dialog box: On the Help menu in InstallShield, click About InstallShield.

If you do not verify InstallShield within the trial period, InstallShield will stop working when the trial period has ended. You can perform serial number verification at any time before or after the trial period has ended.

To obtain a copy of InstallShield that you can evaluate, visit the Downloads page on the Acresso Web site (http://www.acresso.com).

Purchasing an InstallShield LicenseYou can purchase InstallShield through several methods:

To register your serial number, visit http://www.installshield.com/register.

If you try to perform serial number verification but your serial number has not been registered, the verification wizard that is displayed when you launch InstallShield prompts you to register online.

Verifying Through the InternetOnline verification through the Internet is a quick, one-time process. Online verification occurs when you enter your serial number in the verification wizard and click the Verify button. Verification is completely anonymous.

Task To verify your copy of InstallShield through the Internet:

1. Launch InstallShield. Before InstallShield starts, the splash screen for the verification wizard is displayed.

2. Click the Own hyperlink on the splash screen. The verification wizard displays a dialog that requests the serial number. Enter your serial number, and then click the Verify button.

The wizard transmits the verification request to the verification server. The verification wizard receives the server’s response and immediately verifies your serial number for you. Once you have completed verification, the verification wizard is no longer displayed when you launch InstallShield.

Verifying Through EmailIf you do not have an Internet connection or if you are having problems completing the online verification process, the verification wizard gives you the option of performing offline verification through email.

Chapter 1: Serial Number Verification for InstallShieldVerifying Through Email

Task To perform email verification:

1. Attempt to verify your serial number through the Internet. If it cannot be completed, the verification wizard displays a message explaining why it could not occur.

2. Click the Proceed with offline verification button. The Offline Verification dialog opens. The Request text box contains your request text. The request text starts with <?xml version, and it ends with </Request>.

3. Perform one of the following steps:

• To copy the request text to the clipboard, click the Copy button. Note that all of the text in the Request text box must be selected when you do this. The verification wizard copies the request text to your clipboard, enabling you to paste it into another application, such as Notepad. Send the request text to the email address that is provided in the verification wizard.

• To save the request text to a text file that you can email from a different machine, click the Save button. The wizard lets you save the text as a .request file. Send the .request file to the email address that is displayed in the verification wizard.

• To print the request text, click the Print button. The wizard uses your machine’s default text editor to print the request text to your machine’s default printer. Send the request text to the email address that is provided in the verification wizard. Note that the Print does not work if your machine’s default text editor is Notepad2.

• To email the request text to Acresso Support from the machine that is running the verification wizard, click the E-mail button. The wizard opens a new email message in your default email client. The body of the message contains the request text that Acresso Support needs. The To field has the email address where you should send the message. Send the message.

When Acresso Support receives the email message from you, a representative will email to you a message with the response text. If you still have time left in your trial period, you can use InstallShield while you wait for the message.

4. When you receive the email message from Acresso Support and you are ready to complete the verification process, launch InstallShield to open the verification wizard.

5. Proceed to the Offline Verification dialog, which has Response text box.

6. Copy the response text that is in the email message from Acresso Support to your clipboard. The response text starts with <?xml version, and it ends with </Response>. In the wizard, click the Paste button.

Note: As an alternative for step 6, you can copy the response text and paste it into a text file. Change the name of the text file to License.response. In the Offline Verification dialog, click the Load button, and then select the License.response file.

7. Click the Verify button.

The verification wizard verifies your serial number.

Chapter 1: Serial Number Verification for InstallShieldUninstalling and Reinstalling InstallShield

Verification is a one-time process. Once you have completed verification, the verification wizard is no longer displayed when you launch InstallShield.

Uninstalling and Reinstalling InstallShieldTo move your InstallShield license from one machine to another, you must first return your license to your account on the verification server. This occurs automatically when you uninstall InstallShield from the original machine. Returning the license makes it available again so that you can use your serial number for verification on a different machine.

Specifying the FLEXnet License ServerIf your organization purchased floating licenses for InstallShield from Acresso, your organization must first set up the FLEXnet license server. Once that has been done, you need to identify the license server that you are using on the machine where you install InstallShield.

Task To specify the FLEXnet license server:

1. Launch InstallShield. Before InstallShield starts, the splash screen for the verification wizard is displayed.

2. Click the Own hyperlink on the splash screen. InstallShield displays a dialog that requests the serial number. This dialog also has a Browse for corporate license server hyperlink.

3. Click the Browse for corporate license server hyperlink. The Specify License Server dialog opens.

4. Specify the server.

5. If the server is not configured to use the default port, specify the server port number.

6. Click the Test Connection hyperlink.

7. Click OK.

The wizard connects your machine with the FLEXnet license server.

Tip: For more information about the FLEXnet license server, see the documentation that is provided to you when you purchase your floating licenses from Acresso.

Answers

What is verification?

Verification is a quick and anonymous process that verifies the authenticity of your Acresso software. This is done to protect you from the adverse effects of pirated software. The process also verifies that the serial number has not been used to verify InstallShield on more systems than allowed by the InstallShield End-User License Agreement (EULA). No personally identifiable information is required.

After you first launch InstallShield, the verification splash screen is displayed. After a few seconds, the splash screen disappears if you have not clicked on the splash screen, and InstallShield is launched as a fully functional trial product. If you want to verify your InstallShield serial number right away, you can click the Own hyperlink. The wizard guides you through the verification process, and in seconds, InstallShield is verified and authenticated. The verification process does not hinder the usability of InstallShield. You can use it the same way you always have.

What happens during verification?

You go through a series of easy steps to verify your InstallShield serial number, usually through the Internet (or offline, through email). You enter a product serial number, which is used to authenticate the InstallShield license, thus unlocking the product. No personal information is required, and the entire process takes just a few seconds.

Chapter 1: Serial Number Verification for InstallShieldVerification FAQs

How does verification work?

For an explanation of the verification process, see Overview of the Verification Process.

What information is required for serial number verification?

Verification requires your InstallShield serial number. No personal information is needed.

Does verification affect my software or my computer?

No. Verification has no effect on the performance of your computer or software.

How do I verify my InstallShield serial number?

After purchasing InstallShield (and subsequently receiving your serial number), you simply enter the serial number in the designated field that is displayed in the verification wizard when you launch InstallShield, and then click the Verify button.

Typically, verification is completed in just a few seconds through the Internet (online verification). In some cases, offline verification is required. If so, this is accomplished through email. Email verification requires you to send an email message (which is autogenerated by the verification wizard) to Acresso Support. This email message contains your serial number and the verification request text. Using this information, a Acresso support representative will verify that the product’s license and serial number are valid, unlock your product for use, and send you an email message that contains the verification response text. The next time you launch InstallShield, the verification wizard prompts you for the verification response text. You can paste the verification response text into the wizard, and click the Verify button. Then your copy of InstallShield is verified.

How long does it take to complete the verification process?

Internet verification (online verification) typically takes seconds to complete. It is dependent on the type of Internet technology that you are using. The amount of data being transmitted is very small, so high-speed connections are not required.

How soon must I perform verification?

You have a limited number of days to complete verification after the first launch. The verification splash screen shows the number of days that are left in your trial period. The verification splash screen is displayed every time that you launch InstallShield during the trial period (before verification has occurred). In addition, the About dialog box in InstallShield shows the number of days remaining. To access the About dialog box: On the Help menu in InstallShield, click About InstallShield.

Chapter 1: Serial Number Verification for InstallShieldVerification FAQs

Can I install InstallShield without verifying a serial number?

Yes. After installation, you can use InstallShield for a limited number of days without performing serial number verification. InstallShield is fully functional during this trial period.

After that trial period has ended, you need to perform serial number verification in order to use InstallShield.

What happens if I do not perform verification for my copy of InstallShield?

InstallShield will stop working at the end of the trial period if you do not verify your serial number.

How can I obtain a serial number for verification?

If you purchased and downloaded InstallShield from the Acresso online store, you should have received your serial number through email. If you purchased a physical copy, your serial number is located on the adhesive label on the back of your InstallShield CD or DVD case. If you cannot find your serial number, contact your Acresso sales representative.

What is the difference between verification and registration?

Verification is a mandatory, anonymous process that verifies the serial number for your copy of InstallShield. Product registration is a process that entitles you to product updates and special offers from Acresso. Note that if you purchased InstallShield from a reseller (not directly from Acresso), you must register InstallShield before you can verify it.

Can I verify InstallShield on more than one computer?

It depends on the number of verifications that is allowed for your serial number. The End-User License Agreement usually indicates the number of allowed verifications.

If I verify InstallShield on two computers, can more than one person use the software on the second computer?

Allowing others to use your secondary license is probably in violation of the End-User License Agreement.

Can I uninstall my copy of InstallShield on one machine and reinstall it on another?

Yes. All you need to do is uninstall your copy on the current machine and reinstall it on a new machine. Once you have installed it on the new machine, you must perform verification for your copy of InstallShield on the new machine.

What if I upgrade or get a new computer?

Simply uninstall your software. Then, after upgrading or replacing your computer, reinstall the software.

Chapter 1: Serial Number Verification for InstallShieldVerification FAQs

Can I share my copy of InstallShield with others?

You can let others use InstallShield as a trial copy even after you have verified it. If they want to keep using InstallShield after their trial period ends, they need to purchase their own license. Do not share the serial number that you used for verification, since it is required to reverify your product and obtain technical support.

Will I ever have to reverify my serial number?

Only in extreme situations. For example, if you upgrade your computer, or if the verification process detects that the license has been tampered with, you may need to reverify your copy.

Will I be able to reinstall InstallShield and reverify my serial number if my hard drive crashes?

Yes. Verification can be done in most cases. If your attempt fails, visit http://support.acresso.com to report the problem, or contact Acresso Support at [email protected].

Do I always need to be online to use InstallShield?

Once you have verified your serial number for your copy of InstallShield, you do not need to be online to use it.

What information is collected and transmitted in the verification process?

The verification process is completely anonymous and never requests, collects, or transmits personal information. It does not scan your hard drive. Furthermore, none of the collected information can be used to identify your individual hardware components.

More specifically, the verification process gathers a minimal amount of information about InstallShield and your machine to create the request text for the license. The request text consists of the following data:

• Serial number that you entered to verify the product

• License number

• Verification request text

• Transaction ID

What does Acresso do with the InstallShield verification information?

The information is used to verify that your copy of InstallShield is used within the capacity outlined by the InstallShield End-User License Agreement (EULA). The verification information that you provide is never linked to your personal customer information. For additional information, review the Acresso privacy policy on the Acresso Web site (http://www.acresso.com).
