2. General

Everything for drainage5

2.1 Areas of applicationThe Pumpfix® F is designed to be installedin a downward sloped, vented, continousrun drainage pipe. In this application thePumpfix® F will provide through drainageduring normal conditions, protection againstbackwater during times of backwater andthe drainage of connected plumbing fixtureseven during times of backwater. When afixture plumbed into the Pumpfix® F isdrained during times of backwater, thePumpfix® F will intake the wastewater, macerate any solids with its cutting pumpand pump out the waste against thepressure of the backwater.

Important:A requirement for trouble free operation isthat the Pumpfix® F is installed in a pipe withproper slope and ventilation.

2.2 Contents of deliveryThe Pumpfix® F package includes the valveitself (with pump and backwater flap) and acontrol unit. Included with the splash proofcontrol unit (120V - 60Hz or 230V - 50 Hz)is the optical probe and Installation andUser’s Manual.

2.3 When to install the Pumpfix® FIf the Pumpfix® F is being installed duringthe construction phase of a building only thebody of the valve with cover and pumpshould be installed (the optical probe andcontrol unit should not be connnected)(Chapter 3). During this time make sure tostore the electrical components in a cleanand dry place. When the heavy constructionphase of the building is complete the opticalprobe should be installed in the cover of thevalve, the control unit mounted on a nearbywall and all necessary electricalconnections made. 6.1 Principle Functions

1. Normal operation 2. Backwater operation3. Wastewater disposal during

backwater

6. Operation

As backwater occurs, the free hanging flapis forced closed due to the pressure of thebackwater and provides a complete sealagainst the back-up of wastewater into all ofthe Pumpfix® F protected areas.

During times of backwater the Pumpfix® F protectsa building against the back-up of wastewater whileat the same time disposing of its waste. This ispossible because of an optical sensor andintegrated sewage pump located within thePumpfix® F. As a building’s plumbing fixtures aredrained during times of backwater the wastewaterlevel rises inside the piping system and thePumpfix® F. This is sensed by the optical probewhich activates the cutting pump. The pumpintakes the wastewater, macerates the solids andpumps against the pressure of the backwater. Theintegrated free hanging flap prevents the grey-water or sewage from flowing back into the building.

During normal conditions the Pumpfix® Ffunctions as a standard backwater valve asshown in the ‘Normal Operation’ illustrationabove. The force of the free flowing waste-water pushes the free hanging flap open andallows the waste water to pass unhinderedto a public sewer line or a private sewagesystem.

6.3 Custom Pump SettingsThe Pumpfix® F is delivered pre program-med so that it can be installed and usedeffectively without setting any of the custompump settings. The pre programmed settingwill handle all drainage and backwaterscenarios. However, customized pumpsettings can be programmed if adjusting thesettings of the Pumpfix® F can increaseperformance and longevity.

Programming the Pumpfix® FFor programming the Pumpfix® F use theLED numbers as identified belowLED 1 : ‘POWER’ LEDLED 2 : ‘ALARM’ LEDLED 3 : ‘PROBE SUBMERGED’ LEDLED 4 : ‘PUMPING / TEST PUMP’ LED

Setting the pumping times. The Pumpfix® F can be programmed toadjust how long the pump runs. This is doneby keeping both the ‘ALARM’ and ‘PUM-PING / TEST PUMP’ buttons pressed for afew seconds until the continuous alarm tonesounds. After releasing the ‘ALARM’ and‘PUMPING / TEST PUMP’ buttons thecurrent pump time setting can be determinedby the blinking LEDs (please see tablebelow). The length of pumping time can nowbe programmed. To change the pumpingtimes press the ‘ALARM’ button. Each timethe ‘ALARM’ button is pressed, 5 secondswill be added to the pumping time. Thenewly enterred times can be determined byone or two blinking LEDs and checking withthe table below. When the desired pumpingtime has been enterred press the ‘PUM-PING / TEST PUMP’ button to save the newsetting. The new pumping time changes willbe confirmed by a two toned audible signal.

If within 20 seconds the changes are notsaved by pressing the ‘PUMPING / TESTPUMP’ button, the Pumpfix® F will automaticallysave the previous pumping time (this will beconfirmed by a single tone audible signal). The Pumpfix® F is delivered pre-program-med with a pumping time of 10 seconds.

Setting the ‘Pump start delay’ times. The Pumpfix® F can be programmed todelay starting the pump after the optical sen-sor has sensed wastewater. The advantageof this is that the wastewater will have achance to build up in the pipe so that thePumpfix® F can pump out the entire volumewith one activation rather than turning onand off several times. To change the ‘Pumpstart delay’ times keep both the ‘ALARM’and ‘PUMPING / TEST PUMP’ buttons pres-sed for a few seconds until the continuousaudible alarm sounds. Release the ‘ALARMand ‘PUMPING / TEST PUMP’ buttons. Now again press both the ‘ALARM’ and‘PUMPING / TEST PUMP’ buttons for a fewseconds until the continous audible alarmsounds again and the ‘POWER’ and‘ALARM’ LEDs light. After releasing the‘ALARM’ and ‘PUMPING / TEST PUMP’buttons the current pump start delay timesetting can be determined by the blinkingLEDs (please see table below). To change

the pump start delay times press the‘ALARM’ button. Each time the ‘ALARM’button is pressed, additional time will beadded to the pump start delay time. Theenterred times can be determined by lookingat the blinking LEDs and checking with thetable below. When the desired pump startdelay time has been enterred press the‘PUMPING / TEST PUMP’ button to save thenew setting. The new ‘Pump start delay’times will be confirmed by a two tonedaudible signal. If within 20 seconds thechanges are not saved by pressing the‘PUMPING / TEST PUMP’ button, thePumpfix® F will automatically save theprevious ‘Pump start delay’ (this will beconfirmed by a single tone audible signal). The Pumpfix® F is delivered pre-programmedwith a pump start delay time of 1 second.

Setting to either ‘Finish Controlled’ or ‘StartControlled’ modes.

The Pumpfix® F can be programmed tooperate in either ‘Finish Controlled’ or ‘StartControlled’ modes. In the Finish Controlledpump setting mode, the optical probesenses the build-up of wastewater in thedrainage pipe and activates the Pumpfix® Fwhich will begin pumping after the program-med delay start time has elapsed. In thismode the pump will continue to run for theprogrammed period of time after thewastewater level has fallen below the opticalsensor level. In the Start Controlled pumpsetting mode, the optical probe senses thebuild-up of wastewater in the drainage pipeand activates the Pumpfix® F which willbegin pumping after the programmed delaystart time has elapsed. In this mode thepump will run for the programmed period oftime and then shut off. If there is still waste-water above the sensor level the pump will

8. Additional functions

8.1 Self Diagnosis System (SDS)As part of the SDS Control unit, thePumpfix® F automatically tests its pumpingsystem once per month. As part of this selftest, the pump will run for two seconds. If thePumpfix® F detects any problems with itsoperation during this monthly test, it willdisplay the problem on the control unit asdescribed in Chapter 7. This is an importantreason that the Pumpfix® F always beunplugged before maintaining or inspectingthe unit. With the Pumpfix® F unpluggedthere is no risk of unintended activation ofthe pump.

8.2 Battery life and replacementWhile the Pumpfix® F is connected to asuitable power supply, the unit continuous-ly checks the condition of the two batteries. If at time of initialization the batteries hold

under 12.5 Volts total power, the Pumpfix®

F will not initialize itself. In this case, unplugthe Pumpfix® F control unit from its powersource, check and replace the batteries ifnecessary and then reconnect the controlunit to its power source. The estimated lifeof new batteries is four years. Batteriescertified for use with the KESSEL Pumpfix®

F are Duracell 9 Volt Type MN 1604/6LR61(Requirement - 2). If discarding batteries, please do so properly.

8.3 Battery functionThe purpose of the batteries is to notify theuser of a power failure by LED and audiblealarm notification. Although during a powerfailure the Pumpfix® F will continue to provi-de protection against backwater due to itsfree hanging backwater flap, the pump ofthe Pumpfix® F will not operate.

8.4 Signalling device with auxiliaryconnection (Optional)

An optional additional circuit board with anauxiliary connection (North American Option-7 / European Product Number 80072) canbe installed to allow the Pumpfix® F to beconnected to a warning beacon, audiblealarm or a building’s central control system. The additional circuit board is plugged intothe mother board inside the control unit andfastened with the 4 provided screws

Please note: The auxiliary device iscertified for up to 42 Volts / 0.5 A.
