Becca Ferguson's fifth grade students were indignant about the faultyproduct and the nuisance' they hadbecome. It was at their insistence thatthe idea to write to the company tocomplain and demand a refund wasborn.
Coincidentally, the students werestudying "persuasive letter writiJ;J.g," apart of the standards and benchmarkrequirements. Ferguson set them tothe task ofwriting to the company thatsold the buddies to the school, but allthe time not thinking anything wouldcome of it except the lesson of the letter writing itself.
Superintendent Sergio Castanonstopped into the classroom during thetime the students were deep into theletter-writing project. His skepticismover any possible positive responsefrom the company was apparent whenhe offered to take the buddies andrepair them himself. Ferguson shuf-
