Zappa natural slate façade from Komproment
ZAPPA is a natural slate façade system for covering existing as well as new buildings. The system is flexible
in terms of both visual expression and the level of thermal resistance.
ZAPPA façade system can be mounted directly onto the existing façade, on wooden frames or using
aluminium battens.
The natural slate for the Zappa system is supplied in three standard sizes, 200 x 400 mm, 250 x 500 mm
and 300 x 600 mm. Special sizes can be manufactured upon request.
The ZAPPA façade system is Cradle to Cradle certified at silver level. NOTE! The certification only applies to
system deliveries. Applies to Barcelona Plain and Barcelona Silver White slate only.
These instructions are prepared solely for façades mounted in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, on the basis
of installation on a wooden substructure.
Important!
Attachment between the substructure and the load-bearing building sections is not part of these
instructions and must fulfil the applicable standards and regulations at all times, as well as being
documented in the specific projects.

Mounting principles
Façade
Zappa façade system has been developed for use
on façades. Natural slate is easily affixed to the
aluminium battens supplied with mounting clips
and mounted as a ventilated rainscreen according
to the two-step principle.
Roofs
Zappa façade system is not suitable for use on
roofs. Contact Komproment if you require roofing
solutions with natural slate.
Flatness tolerances for the underlying structure
Always check the underlying structure before
mounting spacers and battens. Straightness
requirement on the underlying structure, vertical
and horizontal, tolerance: +/- 3 mm, measured
with straightedge over 2 m.
Flashings All flashings around windows, doors, gables,
eaves, etc., in Komproment's standard drawings
and instructions are examples only. All flashings
must be reviewed, designed and planned out for
the individual project by the supervising architect
and/or consulting engineer.
Attachment Attachment to the load-bearing structure is not a part of these instructions and must always be documented and dimensioned for the individual project in accordance with current standards and legislation.
Details The drawings are not drawn to scale and are shown as principles. All structures must be designed for the individual buildings. Komproment cannot be held responsible for project design or for project details, which are the responsibility of the architect and/or consulting engineer supervising the project at all times. The dimensions provided are for guidance and must be checked at the building site.
Safety
As with all building materials, the safety
precautions for the machining of products from
Komproment are subject to the provisions in the
Working Environment Act.
It is recommended that:
Machining (cutting, grinding, drilling) of the
natural slate will release dust. Therefore:
• Avoid breathing in the dust by using a
tool with a dust filter
• Avoid contact with eyes and skin by
wearing personal protective equipment
• Avoid breathing in dust by wearing
personal protective equipment
• Ensure adequate ventilation at the
workplace

Sorting of natural slate
As natural slate is a cleaved natural product the
surface and thickness will vary, which is why the
following points are important to ensure the best
end result.
1. The slate must be sorted before
installation begins.
2. The slate is sorted into three thicknesses.
This could be done by colour marking on
edges that will be not be visible after
mounting, for example a colour code for
thick-thin slates.
3. Start by mounting the thickest slates
from the bottom up. (It is important to
always use the same thickness across an
entire row).
4. It is possible for around 2-5% of the slates
to be rejected before starting. With some
adjustments, these 'rejects' can be used
around windows/doors and edges.
5. Corners may be chipped on the slate, in
which case these slates should be
mounted so that the chipped corners
face upwards under the overlapping tiles,
if possible.
Machining of natural slate
To ensure the best result, it is important to have
the correct tools to adapt the natural slate. This is
done in different ways depending on the type of
slate being used. You can find a description of
how to adapt the slate below:
Barcelona Silver White and Plain
Machining of these slate types is always done
from the back, so that the front gets the same
chamfer as the other edges. We recommend
slate-cutting shears and a slate cutter/guillotine.
Autumn, Clouded Bay and Diamond Black
We always recommend cutting these types of
natural slate with a wet tile cutter/wet saw with
diamond blade.
General
Use a masonry drill bit or diamond drill bit to drill
holes in natural slate, do not use an impact
driver!
Important! Drilling and cutting dust must be
removed immediately after machining the slate,
as this can 'burn' into the surface.

Principal details Spacers
The wooden spacers from Komproment are heat-
treated. The heat treatment is a chemical-free
wood protection that improves the wood's
properties in terms of decay and weather
resistance.
The aluminium spacer from Komproment is a
100% inorganic spacer made from seawater-
resistant aluminium.
The spacers ensure ventilation and free passage
behind the façade (for ventilation and water).
The spacers are mounted vertically onto the
façade, max. C/C 600 mm.
Start at foundations (aluminium battens)
Against the foundation, place the starter batten
so the natural slate is the desired distance from
the terrain.
The façade cladding should be kept a suitable
distance from the terrain. Recommended = min.
150 mm.
Place the ventilated mouse guard strip under the
starter batten to prevent the entry of rodents
behind the façade.
The starter strip's additional depth ensures that
the natural slate has the correct incline.
Placement of first standard batten
The first batten after the starter batten is placed
over the starter batten with the following
distances:
X (see drawing):
For 200 x 400 mm slates: 120 mm
For 250 x 500 mm slates: 170 mm
For 300 x 600 mm slates: 220 mm
11
Jellingvej 11 · DK-9230 Svenstrup · Tlf.: +45 96 52 07 10 · [email protected] · www.komproment.dk
Batten distance
The system batten is mounted on the spacers using
the approved nails/screws.
For aluminium spacers, use 4.8 x 20 mm screws in
accordance with the component overview.
For wooden spacers and the underlying wooden
structure use 2.8 x 65 mm nails in accordance with
the component overview, centred in the spacer and
the underlying wooden structure.
Eyes/punches in the battens for clips are always
placed plumb over each other in consideration of
the running bond.
Batten distance (X1):
300 x 600 mm slates: 270 mm (6.17 slates/m2)
250 x 500 mm slates: 220 mm (9.09 slates/m2)
200 x 400 mm slates: 170 mm (14.71 slates/m2)
Mounting of slates
Divide up the slates starting at the centre of the
façade. The natural slate is mounted onto the
system batten one tile at a time using mounting
clips. The slates are always mounted in a half
running bond. The minimum slate width at corners,
windows and doors is 150 mm. If it is not possible
to maintain the running bond around windows,
doors and corners, this is established in the second
row of slates after the edge. Always mount 2 clips
per slate, even for slates down to 150 mm.
Mounting clips
Starter clips should be used for the lowest batten, 2
clips per slate. Starter battens/starter clips can also
be used over windows and doors to even out slate
thicknesses.
Standard clips should be used on the other battens.
Always use 2 clips per slate. This also applies to
small pieces of slate (slate ≤ 150 mm).
The slate is secured at the top of the clip and the
clip also holds the slate in the next row in place.
When using Zappa standard clips, always lay the
battens based on a 30 mm overlap.
If another overlap/batten distance is wished for –
please contact Komproment.
Due to the natural unevenness of the slate, it is
important that all slates are held in place by
the mounting clip to avoid 'rattling'. If
mounting a thin slate, you can squeeze the
mounting clip so that it fits onto the slate
better.

Finishing slates over windows/doors
General: Mount the façade cladding over the
window with a min. 10 mm distance to the
window flashing. Adjust the slate where
necessary.
Use a starter batten over the window and starter
clips to offset the slate thickness.
Alternatively, when using small pieces of slate
over windows and doors, you can also use the
standard batten as it will not be necessary in this
case to offset a slate thickness.
Finishing slates under windows
General: Finish the natural slate/batten/spacer
under the window with a min. 10 mm distance to
the window sill. The window sill must also have
min. 30 mm extra room out over the façade
cladding. Adjust the slate at the top if necessary.
For whole tiles, finish with a standard aluminium
batten. For adjusted tiles, it may be necessary to
wedge the aluminium batten so that the slate is
ensured the correct incline.
Slate clips can be adjusted in accordance with the
drawing.
Finishing at the top (eaves/gable etc.)
General: Slates/battens/spacers are finished with
min. 10 mm distance to flashing/end of cladding
at the top. Also ensure ventilation of the façade
and the roof structure, if needed. Adjust the slate
at the top if necessary.
For whole tiles, finish with a standard aluminium
batten.
For adjusted tiles, it may be necessary to wedge
