STEPS TO INSTALL SQL SERVER 2014 STANDARD FOR USE WITH PORTFOLIOCENTER 1 From the installation splash screen, select Installation on the left side then click New SQL Server standalone installation or add features to an existing installation on the right side. 2 On the Product Key page, enter your product key as provided by Microsoft or your licensed third-party seller, then click Next. 3 On the License Terms page, check the “I Accept the License Terms” box, and then click Next. 4 On the Global Rules page, the installation will perform a check to ensure all necessary components are present on the computer. When the check is complete, if there are no failures or warnings, the installation will proceed to the next screen automatically.

INSTALLING SQL SERVER 2014 STANDARD FOR USE WITH

PORTFOLIOCENTER®

This document provides instructions for installing SQL Server 2014 Standard using installation media obtained from Microsoft® or a licensed third-party seller. For instructions on installing SQL 2014 Express, a free edition of SQL, using an installation file provided by Schwab Performance Technologies® or downloaded from Microsoft please see Installing SQL Server 2014 Express.

Important

If the SQL 2014 Standard installation of an instance named “PortfolioCenter” is not completed prior to installing the PortfolioCenter application, an instance of SQL 2014 Express will be installed by default during the PortfolioCenter installation process.

STEPS TO INSTALL SQL SERVER 2014 STANDARD FOR USE WITH PORTFOLIOCENTER

1 From the installation splash screen, select Installation on the left side then click New SQL Server standalone installation or add features to an existing installation on the right side.

2 On the Product Key page, enter your product key as provided by Microsoft or your licensed third-party seller, then click Next.

3 On the License Terms page, check the “I Accept the License Terms” box, and then click Next.

4 On the Global Rules page, the installation will perform a check to ensure all necessary components are present on the computer. When the check is complete, if there are no failures or warnings, the installation will proceed to the next screen automatically.

Important

You may see a Failure or Warning status for a rule if you are missing one or more components necessary for the SQL Server installation. In this situation, the Next button will be disabled. Click on the Failure or Warning status of the rule for more information about the issue. If you encounter problems with the installation that force you to exit, make note of the failures, then click the Cancel button to exit the installation. Resolve any issues, then begin again from Step 1.

5 On the Product Updates page, the installation will perform a check for Internet access to use Windows Update to download product updates. When the check is complete, the installation will proceed to the next screen automatically.

Important

You may see an Error if the computer you are installing on does not have access to the Internet. Downloading updates is not required for the installation. You may click Next to proceed with the installation and download updates at a later date.

6 On the Install Rules page, the installation will perform a check for conditions that could cause installation issues. When the check is complete, if there are no failures or warnings the installation will proceed to the next screen automatically.

7 On the Setup Role page, select SQL Server Feature Installation, then click Next.

8 On the Feature Selection page, select the following options:

Database Engine Services

Client Tools Connectivity

Client Tools Backwards Compatibility

Client Tools SDK

Documentation Components

Management Tools – Basic

Management Tools – Complete

SQL Client Connectivity SDK

Click Next to continue.

Note

Features not listed above are not required for use with the PortfolioCenter application. Additional features may be installed at your discretion; consult a System Administrator to determine whether any of these features would be useful in your environment.

The Instance root directory setting is where the SQL files will be installed for the instance. You may change this directory to any local folder if desired. If you change this setting, please make note of the location used.

9 On the Feature Rules page, the installation will perform a check for conditions that could cause installation issues. When the check is complete, if there are no errors or warnings the installation will proceed to the next screen automatically.

10 On the Instance Configuration page, select the Named Instance radio button and enter PORTFOLIOCENTER – in all caps – as the instance name.

The Instance ID and directory information should populate automatically.

Click Next to continue.

11 On the Server Configuration page, set the Account Name for the SQL Server Database Engine to NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM, then click Next.

12 On the Database Engine Configuration page, select the Server Configuration tab:

Set the authentication to Windows Authentication.

In the Specify SQL Server Administrators window, select the Add button and add the local Administrators group as an SQL Server Administrator.

Click Add Current User to add the currently logged in Windows user as an SQL Server Administrator.

13 On the Database Engine Configuration page, select the Data Directories tab:

The User database directory is where your main database file will be stored. Set this to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Schwab Performance Technologies\Databases” or another local folder of your choice.

The User database log directory is where your database log file will be stored. When you change the User database directory setting, this setting will be updated to match.

The Backup directory setting is where your database backups will be saved by default. Set this to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Schwab Performance Technologies\Databases\Backups” or another local folder of your choice.

Click Next.

Note

If you change the locations on the Data Directories tab to something other than “C:\Program Files (x86)\Schwab Performance Technologies\” please make note of the locations used.

14 On the Feature Configuration Rules page, the installation will perform a check for conditions that could cause installation issues. When the check is complete, if there are no errors or warnings the installation will proceed to the next screen automatically.

15 The Ready to Install page will display all the selected configuration options. Review the list, then click Install.

16 When the installation is complete, you will see a page indicating whether it completed successfully or not. Click Close to complete the installation.

Important

If the installation did not complete successfully, take note of the location of the summary log file. This information will be requested if you call our Technical Support team for assistance.
