Installing Windows XP Mode Once the files are downloaded, launch ‘WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe’. Follow the steps of this installer and it should install the Windows XP Mode virtual hard disk. This virtual hard disk file is installed to ‘C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode’ by default.

Installing Synapse on Windows 7 – 64-Bit

This tutorial will guide you through the steps of setting up Synapse on Windows 7 – 64-Bit by utilizing Windows XP Mode.

1. Download Required Files

Windows XP Mode: http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/2/C/72C7BAB7-2F32-4530-878A-292C20E1845A/WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe VirtualPC (64-Bit): http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/5/5/0554AE99-785F-45CB-B1F2-0E3ED1E6117D/Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu Windows Patch if you are NOT running Service Pack 1 of Windows 7: http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/A/3/0A326AC6-2F94-423F-B760-C61CB8439182/Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu

2. Installing Windows XP Mode Once the files are downloaded, launch ‘WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe’. Follow the steps of this installer and it should install the Windows XP Mode virtual hard disk. This virtual hard disk file is installed to ‘C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode’ by default.

3. Installing VirtualPC

Execute the VirtualPC installer, 'Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu’

(Optional) This next step is only required if you are not running Service Pack 1 of Windows 7: Launch ‘Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu’ (64-bit). Follow the instructions of the update. It may ask you to reboot again after it completes.

Configure Automatic Updates: Select ‘Not right now’. For your Automatic Updates options and continue by clicking ‘Next’. Press ‘Start Setup’ on the next screen to start the install process. This process will take a few minutes depending on your computer specifications so please be patient while it completes.

Complete the Windows XP Mode Setup: Once the process completes, you should have a fully functional Windows XP environment running in a window on you Windows 7 operating system.

5. Install Synapse Workstation Accessing the MH External PACS website: Launch Internet Explorer from within XP Mode. Navigate to: https://pacs.mh.org.au A pop-up will be displayed. Please use your Melbourne Health domain (Windows) username and password. Please also make sure you have the domain in your username, i.e. ‘WHCN\[username here]’ Once authenticated, you may proceed to download and install the Synapse client by clicking on the Synapse logo ‘Workstation Code Download’

Bypass Internet Explorer Security Checks: If an ‘Information Bar’ dialog screen pops up, it means that Internet Explorer has blocked the Synapse client from running. Click 'OK' on the 'Information Bar' to unblock. Click on the top of the Internet Explorer window just below the Address Bar that is saying ‘This site might require the following…’ Click on ‘Install ActiveX Control…’

Installing the Synapse Workstation Client: Another ‘Security Warning’ dialog will pop up asking whether you wish to install the Synapse software. Press ‘Install’ Another warning may pop up, please also press ‘Install’ Make a note of the difference in the names of the packages it is trying to install, make sure you install both. After accepting to install all the packages, please wait while the Synapse client is downloaded and installed.

Installation Completed: Once the installation process is complete you will get confirmation in the webpage advising whether the installation was successful or not. There should now be a 'Synapse' icon on the desktop of the Windows XP Mode.

Edit Synapse Properties: Right click on ‘Synapse’ on the Windows XP Mode desktop and go to ‘Properties’ In the ‘Synapse Properties’ dialog, make sure ‘Synapse’ is highlighted in the drop down box Make sure the address is ‘https://pacs.mh.org.au’ and 'Use encrypted communication (https) for images' are ticked.

Adjust Colour Depth for Windows XP Mode: Click on the Start Button of Windows XP Mode NOT your Windows 7 Start Button. - Go to 'Run...' - In the 'Run' dialog box, type in 'gpedit.msc' and press 'OK' - The 'Group Policy' management dialog should open Within the 'Group Policy' expand (clicking on the ‘+’ icon) the ‘Administrative Templates’ folder under the ‘Computer Configuration’ heading. - Expand 'Windows Components' and then click on 'Terminal Services' - Double click on the 'Limit maximum color depth' option on the right pane - Another dialog will open, change the configuration to 'Enabled' - From the drop-down box choose '24 bit' as 'Color Depth' - Press 'OK' and close 'Group Policy' window

Restart the Windows XP Virtual Machine when this is done.

6. Create Synapse Shortcut Directly From Windows 7 Create shortcut: While Windows XP Mode is open, right click on the ‘Synapse’ icon on the desktop and go to ‘Create Shortcut’ A new shortcut to Synapse should be on the desktop labeled ‘Shortcut to Synapse’ Right click on this shortcut and ‘Cut’

Paste Shortcut in correct location: Right click on the Start Menu (of Windows XP Mode) and go to ‘Open All Users’ Double click on the ‘Programs’ folder Right click and ‘Paste’ the cut shortcut from earlier into this folder You can also right click on ‘Shortcut to Synapse’ shortcut and rename it to ‘Synapse’ if desired

Result: Once this is done correctly a new Start Menu icon should appear on your Windows 7 Start Menu under the ‘Windows Virtual PC’ folder From there you should be able to launch Synapse directly from Windows 7 without having to run ‘Windows XP Mode’ first.
