Instant Learning

I used to teach something called Accelerated Learning.

Then I decided it was too slow, so now I am teaching

Instant Learning!

The fact is that human beings are unlimited in their

capacity to learn, change, grow, expand, connect, and be

inspired.

In fact, the first lesson of Instant Learning is to de-

hypnotize yourself from the social programming that

tells you that learning should take years.

You can move forward as fast as you want.

You can absorb information at the speed of

thought.

You can use the processes explained in this book to

get all A’s in school, to earn a doctorate, to pass an

exam, or just to become the smartest person on the

planet.

Instant Learning

Learning is the acquisition of knowledge and skills.

Instant learning is the acquisition of knowledge and

skills as fast as they are taught or demonstrated to you—

instantly.

Instant learning is the acquisition of knowledge

and skills as fast as they are taught or demonstrated

to you—instantly.

Instant Learning of Conceptual Knowledge

Step 1: Definition of Terms

The first step in learning any new knowledge is to clearly

define the terms. The better and more insightful your

definitions, the more meaningful your overall learning

experience will be.

If you are reading a book or textbook, find out how

that author defines the terms to be used and capture

that first.

Definitions:

Learning is the acquisition of knowledge and skills.

Ideas That Can Change Your Life™ in Learning

Instant Learning

Instant learning is the ability to acquire knowledge

and skills as fast as they are taught or demonstrated to

you—instantly.

The key question to ask yourself is “What is this

really?”

Make it a habit to get down to the root of things

right away.

What is this really?

Step 2: Categorization

Becoming an expert in any field is the process of making

finer and more detailed distinctions.

Experts make finer and more detailed

distinctions than others.

An expert on cars recognizes many types of cars.

She can tell them apart by manufacturer, vehicle type,

engine size, make and model, option package, color,

Page 7: INSTANT LEARNING - Amazon S3 › 101_eBooks › Instant Learning...The old technology is called Accelerated Learning. Human beings have an infinite capacity to learn. Your Notes Forever

condition, number of previous owners, or place of

manufacture. She is an expert.

Ski instructors can tell eight to ten different types of

snow apart from one another. The native peoples of the

North can tell 50! They are experts.

A speaker of Japanese can instantly recognize four

classes of verbs, all of which conjugate in different ways.

A grammarian who studies classical Japanese recognizes

more than ten types of verbs. They are experts.

As soon as you have nailed down the most

important definitions, start to capture the different

distinctions made by the experts and the categories or

boxes that they put things into.

For example, learning can be divided into the

learning of conceptual knowledge or the learning of

skills!

This distinction is important because it affects the

process we use in each case.

The key question here is “How do we break this up

to make it more understandable or easier to apply?”

“How do we break this up to make it more

understandable or easier to apply?”

The more distinctions you know, the faster you

grow.

Step 3: Methodology and Application

As you capture the definitions and categories that make

up your field of study, begin taking notes on application.

How can the knowledge be applied or used? What

are the most common methodologies used in the field?

How do the best practitioners get the results that they

get?

The key question here is “How is this used?” or

“How is it actually done?”

How is this used? How is it actually done?

Step 4: Add-ons

In every field of learning there are interesting facts and

information that you may want to capture but that are

not fundamentally important to understanding the

essence of that field.

Create a place in your notes to capture this

information as well.

Step 5: Relation and Evaluation

After you capture new information, you need to tie it

into your existing neural map. Learning can be thought

of as the linking of the known world with the unknown

world.

Your learning must be tied to what you already

know!

The key question here is “How is this like or unlike

the things that I already know?”

Page 10: INSTANT LEARNING - Amazon S3 › 101_eBooks › Instant Learning...The old technology is called Accelerated Learning. Human beings have an infinite capacity to learn. Your Notes Forever

Instant Learning

“How is this like or unlike the things that I

already know?”

For example, you may find the Instant Learning

approach to be more structured than other learning

approaches you have worked with, or you may see it as

being similar to how a good textbook is constructed.

Another key factor here is to evaluate the

information. Add your own distinctions based on

knowledge you already have.

For example, if you are familiar with Mind Mapping,

popularized by Tony Buzan, you might add to your

notes “Mind Mapping could be used in this step to link

learning with past ideas.”

Step 6: Graphing

A picture is worth a thousand words. Where possible,

draw the relationships of the information as a graph,

picture, or other cohesive model.

Page 11: INSTANT LEARNING - Amazon S3 › 101_eBooks › Instant Learning...The old technology is called Accelerated Learning. Human beings have an infinite capacity to learn. Your Notes Forever

Draw the relationships of the information as a

graph, picture, or other visual model.

Our good friend Stephen Covey is the all-time

master of this. He took his 7 Habits and put them into a

model he calls the Maturity Continuum, which makes

the relationships instantly and easily recognizable.

Step 7: Color Coding

The final step is to color code your notes for Instant

Learning review.

Put the major headings in red, and the points for

review in blue. You should be able to review massive

amounts of information almost instantly by using this

approach.

Your notes for this book might look something like

this.

The old technology is called Accelerated Learning.

Human beings have an infinite capacity to learn.

Your Notes Forever

Imagine for one moment that all your college courses

and textbooks had been reduced to a set of notes like

this. You could review your entire college education and

pass all your exams again with one to two days of

preparation!

Instant Learning of Skills

Skill is the ability to actually do what we know.

Skiing is a skill.

Public speaking is a skill.

Breaking boards with your bare hands is a skill.

And yes, you can even learn to instantly break

boards with your bare hands, and we have taught

thousands of people to do just that with no more than

two to three minutes of learning!

VAK

The key to Instant Learning of skills is found in three

letters: VAK. These letters stand for Visual, Auditory,

and Kinesthetic.

To put it in more simple terms, skill is the process of

making use of our senses to produce results. And the

three that we most commonly use are sight, sound, and

feeling.

Visual: Focus

In modeling any skill, the first point of Instant Learning

is focus. What do people with this skill focus on when

they are performing at the highest level?

What does a great picker of stocks look for when

examining a new company?

What does a great public speaker focus on when

standing in front of a room of thousands?

Page 15: INSTANT LEARNING - Amazon S3 › 101_eBooks › Instant Learning...The old technology is called Accelerated Learning. Human beings have an infinite capacity to learn. Your Notes Forever

Instant Learning

What does a great learner focus on when learning?

The Seven Steps of Instant Conceptual Learning,

after all, are nothing more than a model to help us focus

our learning efforts for a more effective result!

Auditory: Language

What do people with this skill say to themselves and

others when they are performing at the highest level?

What do the best sales people say to their clients?

What does an Olympic gold medalist say to herself

before every match?

What do the best parents tell their children? How do

they talk to them every day? What is the language and

tone of voice they use?

Kinesthetic: Use of the Body

More than anything else, skill is tied up with how we

actually use our physical bodies.

Page 16: INSTANT LEARNING - Amazon S3 › 101_eBooks › Instant Learning...The old technology is called Accelerated Learning. Human beings have an infinite capacity to learn. Your Notes Forever

Skill is the doing, and the doing is usually done with

this wonderful body of ours.

How do great teachers stand in front of a

classroom?

What are their gestures like?

What is their facial expression?

How does a great salesperson walk into a room?

Putting It Together

It really is as simple as that. If you want to learn a skill,

pay attention to the key areas of focus, the use of

language, and the use of the physical body.

Create a recipe for getting it done.

Find the difference that makes a difference!

Page 17: INSTANT LEARNING - Amazon S3 › 101_eBooks › Instant Learning...The old technology is called Accelerated Learning. Human beings have an infinite capacity to learn. Your Notes Forever

Ideas That Can Change Your Life™ in Learning

Instant Learning

There will usually be three or four points that make

all the difference between those who get the best results

in any field and the rest of the pack.

For example, in the martial arts one change in

position of the lower spinal cord is all that is needed to

create what is called “the immovable body,” where not

even three people can push you over or move you from

the place you are standing.

Most practitioners spend ten years or more trying to

acquire this skill, but it can be yours in a matter of

minutes if you are focused on how the best people in

the field use their senses to produce the result that they

are getting.

This approach is called modeling. Find someone

performing at the highest level, and find out exactly and

precisely how they do it. Then do the same thing to

produce the same result.

The laws of physics treat us equally, and the results

are available to all!

Instant Learning

The Japanese martial arts have a wonder process

they call shu-ha-ri. It means obey-break-distance.

To obey means to do exactly as the master does.

The most focus should be place on this step. Follow

your model exactly until you can do it the same way they

do.

At the break stage, we start to remove or change a

single aspect of what the master does to see if it is

essential to our result.

This allows us to shorten the process and make it

more efficient. Wasted effort is eliminated.

At the distance stage, we distance ourselves from the

master or model, building our own unique approach.

We can do this effectively and efficiently at this point,

because we understand the original process and its most

essential elements. It is now time for our own original

flavor to come forth.

The Law of Accelerating Returns

In closing, let us share with you the Law of Accelerating

Returns. It basically says this: “The more you do

something, the better you get, and the faster it goes!”

Instant Learning is the same. It is a skill. The more

you practice it, the better you will get.

Practice the method of note taking outlined here

until it becomes a natural part of your thought practice.

Work on the acquisition of skills, until new skills

start to come easily to you.

Become like a little child, curious about the world

and willing to absorb everything as naturally as rain is

absorbed into the dry earth.

Model the masters in every field. Be willing to follow

their process with precision until you understand.

Then, and only then, test it to see what elements are

essential.

And finally add your own flavor to what you have

learned, making it uniquely yours.

With best wishes for your learning,
