The Graduate Program on Sustainability Science at Ibaraki University, in close cooperation with Ibaraki University's Institute for Global Change Adaptation Science (ICAS) and the Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC), aims to develop human resources for environmental management.

Institute for Global Change Adaptation Science (ICAS) The Institute for Global Change Adaptation Science (ICAS), which was established in May 2006 at Ibaraki University, is a member of the Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC), formerly the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S) until 2010. ICAS conducts research, educational, and outreach activities with a focus on adaptation to climate change. The Asia-Pacific is of particular concern due to its staggering population and economic growth but also the region faces the brunt of climate change and natural disasters. Sustainability science is an interdisciplinary field and faculties from all departments, the Graduate School of Humanities, the Graduate School of Education, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, and the Graduate School of Agriculture along with faculties from all university research centers are members of ICAS. Research activities are conducted in four categories: (1) Development of engineering methods for adaptation, (2) Development of climate change-adaptive agricultural technologies, (3) Livelihood plans and policies for adaptation, and (4) Strategies for safe and secure societies in the future. These are based upon the geographical, social and cultural contexts of the Asia-Pacific region.

Graduate Program on Sustainability Science

●The Graduate Program on Sustainability Science at Ibaraki University aims to produce specialists with both broad knowledge and advanced expertise needed for realizing a sustainable society: one that is low-carbon, has a sound material-cycle and co-exists with nature. The program is developed in cooperation with Ibaraki University's Institute for Global Change Adaptation Science (ICAS) and the Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC).

- Students are entitled to transfer credits as agreed upon among universities in the SSC, including the University of Tokyo, and to participate in common international fieldwork programs.

●The Sustainability Science Course is provided as a major in the Urban System Planning Course, Graduate School of Science and Engineering. The Sustainability Science Program is provided as a sub-major in all other graduate courses.

●Graduates who earn the required credits will attain a "Certificate of Sustainability Science Course/Program" and a "Certificate of SSC Joint Educational Program" in addition to a master’s degree in their respective major.

Outline of the Program

The global environmental challenges being faced today - climate change, energy, resource depletion, health, and security - are threatening the survival of human civilization. As these issues are closely interrelated, a holistic approach is needed to understand the big picture. In order to integrate separate research areas and to create a framework for tackling these global issues, a new research area, sustainability science, is required to bridge the gap between the humanities and the sciences. At Ibaraki University, the Graduate Program on Sustainability Science, which started in April 2009, is a graduate program developed to nurture human resources necessary for building a sustainable human society, resolving regional and global issues. The purpose of this program is to enable specialists in their respective fields to gain an understanding of the complex inter-relationship between humans and their environment. These experts must be able to navigate through the interests of stakeholders among business enterprises, public administrations, educational institutions, and civic groups. They should also have the ability persuade all concerned parties to recognize and resolve theirs problems by altering problematic behavior. The program comprises of elements of education programs in each of the four graduate schools at Ibaraki University. Postgraduates who wish to take the program ill take the program in their respective graduate school. The program is provided in cooperation with universitties participating in the Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC). Program graduates will receive a "Certificate of Sustainability Science Course / Program" and a "Certificate of SSC Joint Educational Program."

Curriculum

The Graduate Program on Sustainability Science provides "pragmatic education across mind, skills and knowledge," and comprises of three types of coursework: basic subjects to gain a fundamental knowledge about sustainability; fieldwork seminars emphasizing on-site experience; and individual subjects for each area of specialization.

●Basic subjects include "Frontier of Sustainability Science," "Global Environmental Systems I, II," "Sustainable Social Systems I, II," and "Human Systems I, II."

- Basic subjects are taught through lectures covering a wide range of topics on the Global, Social, and Human systems. Some are presented in English.

- "Frontier of Sustainability Science" is provided as a common subject of SSC involving lectures presented via a remote lecture system connecting all universities participating in the SSC. (This is a compulsory subject in the SSC joint educational program.)

●Fieldwork in Sustainability (international)

- International field studies is conducted in cooperation with Phuket Rajabhat University (Thailand) and Hue University (Vietnam), with the objective of gaining an understanding of local sustainability issues in the Asia-Pacific region and fostering an international perspective.

●Fieldwork in Sustainability (domestic)

- Field studies related to water management for urban planning is organized in cooperation with Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, and the NPO, Adventure Navigation Crew of Oarai.

●Seminar in Developing Facilitation Capacity

- Negotiation of interests and a shared understanding among the involved parties are essential in resolving on-site environmental problems. Through role-playing and other learning techniques, these seminars help improve the abilities of environmental practitioners to resolve conflicts and build consensus.

Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC)

What is sustainability science?

Sustainability science has recently emerged as an approach to offering a road map and means to realize a sustainable future. As defined by the SSC, sustainability science consists of three components: 1) the "Global system", which includes climate, resources, energy, and ecosystem services that together support human civilization: (2) the "Social system", which involves political and economic systems, industrial structure, and technical capabilities that underpin the dynamics of organizations like countries; and (3) the "Human system", which describes the lifestyles, health, values and norms of individuals. A sustainable society where humans and natures coexist can be maintained as long as functional relationships exist among the Earth, society and individuals. Under current conditions, however, these interactions appear to be fraying. The goals of sustainable science are to understand the inter-relationships among the three systems; to identify the mechanisms by which they collapse, as manifested through global environmental and human security issues; and to enable the vision and means of making appropriate responses through systemic restructuring.
