‘Singapore Declaration on Climate Change, Energy and Environment ‘ was adopted at the 3rd EAS (Nov. 2007)

Environmentally Sustainable Cities (ESC) was selected as an initial step of EAS environmental cooperation.

High Level Seminar on Environmentally Sustainable Cities

A High- Level Seminar (HLS) on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (ESC) was held in Jakarta, Indonesia in March 2010.

Four Thematic Sessions (Day 1) Cities and Resource Efficiency and 3Rs (Indonesia) Cities and Biodiversity (Singapore) Cities and Adaptation and Sustainable Urban Development (Australia) Low Carbon and Low Polluting Cities (Japan)

Under the framework of the East Asia Summit (EAS) Environment Ministers Meeting (EMM), which was inaugurated in Hanoi, Vietnam, in October 2008.

basis for realizing ESC. Necessity to mainstream ESC in

Project Objectives

• Encourage bottom-up, voluntary initiatives and self gap analysis by local governments

• Nurture capacity and culture for overall long-term, integrated and cross-sector city planning

• Facilitate collaboration with multiple stakeholders to address local capacity and resource gaps

• Encourage national governments to play a meaningful role to support local government initiatives

• Facilitate regional collaboration among AMS and with the international development community, as well as enabling knowledge-sharing and mutual learning
