SYI 2016 - Our Best Year Yet

Twenty-three students from eleven Milwaukee schools

participated in the 2016 Marquette Law School and

Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association Summer

Youth Institute (SYI). The SYI is designed to introduce

middle and high school students from the City of

Milwaukee to the legal system, expose them to careers

in law, and provide them with practical tools for their

educational goals.

During the seven day program, in addition to

having several guest speakers, the SYI 2016 class

visited the federal courthouse, the Milwaukee

County Courthouse, Harley-Davidson,

Robert W. Baird, and Foley & Lardner.

SYI students are invited to participate in the Honorable

Charles N. Clevert, Jr.. Mentoring Program. Students

met their mentors during the luncheon program on the

first day of the Institute and stayed in touch throughout

the program and beyond. Mentors are attorneys of the

Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association who are

willing to share experiences and advice, as well as help

students to explore the legal profession. “My favorite part of the day was

meeting my mentor!”

from left to right: Lauren Goins (St. Marcus Lutheran), Veronica Salinas (Notre Dame Middle School),

Her Pao Lee (Marquette University High School), Taylor Dye (Wisconsin Conservatory of Lifelong

Learning) and Maya Rodriguez (Divine Savior Holy Angels High School)

“I found it interesting to sit in on cases.”
