WI Active Like A Girl Walk and Run Event
Families and individuals commemorated International Day of the Girl
by participating in the first ever run or walk race event sponsored by
the PEI Women's Institute. PEIWI encouraged all Islanders to engage
in active healthy lifestyles as a result well over 100 participants
sprinted, jogged or walked on Saturday, October 10, in Cavendish
Grove, PEI National Park.
Participants received a swag bag and finisher medal along with
a well deserved hot coffee, milk, barbequed hotdogs and fruit.
PEI Women's Institute would like to thank our partners the Running
Room, PEI Road Runners, PEI Home and School Federation, PEI 4-H,
go!PEI, and PEI Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR).
In addition to volunteering, the Ground Search and Rescue Mobile
Command Post was set up and open to the public for tours and
information. Special thanks to all who participated or volunteered at
this first ever sanctioned and most successful event. Proceeds will go
towards education.
Special thanks to
participants, volunteers
and sponsors for the
outstanding success of this
first ever sanctioned
PEIWI running event.
President’s Greeting
Starting the year by having the 2016 Levee was so successful it has given us
confidence for a year ahead. Founder's Day was a great day both in education
and fun.
The next big event is our Spring is in the Air Gala dinner. This year we are
supporting Ground Search And Rescue (GSAR) as our fund raiser. They spoke at
Founder's Day and gave us an insight of their operation. They also were on the
premises as volunteers and showcasing their equipment at the Active Like A Girl
event.
Another event to plan and come to is our Convention which is being held at the
Town Hall in Stratford. We are really excited to be hosting Sheila Needham as our
guest speaker. Ms. Needham is our Canadian President of ACWW (Associated
Country Women of the World) and is an excellent speaker. It's an event not to be missed.
We encourage you to come and support both of these events as they are worthy of your presence.

Helen Herring Scholarship Winner
Accepting this year’s Helen Herring Scholarship
was Sydney Stavert (middle) a third year
university student at UPEI. Presenting the
award was President Jacquie Larid (left) and
Past President Cynthia Mitchell.
Ottawa, Canada's Capital, was the setting for our FWIC Executive meeting. It took place at St.
Paul's University. We accomplished a lot in a few days. Canada’s Triennial (150 years of Con-
federation) Theme is “Making Change Count”. Along with reports, a session was held to come
up with ideas to stabilize our organization. We looked at the needs of the organization and
planned steps to achieve these goals. New Committees were established: Partnership, Communi-
cation, Grant Writing, Marketing, Sponsorship and Projects. I am on the Sponsorship Commit-
tee. Our goal is to thrive not just survive. We are rebranding our logo to make it more simplified,
modern and easily recognized.
To act on the emergency resolution “Support for the Canadian Network of Women's Shelters and
Transition Houses", the Board met there Executive Director Lisa Martin. She provided insight
into the work and concern for women's shelters, the need for more help with shelters across Canada and how to get women to
be able to access the services available. FWIC Triennial Project for 2015-2018-- Adopt A Shelter, how we help: number of
hours contributed, items donated, baking etc. When more details come forward we will pass them on to branches.
We had a great discussion on our Strategic Plan for the next three years and came up with great idea for the Adelaide Hunter
Hoodless Homestead. They are starting a new outreach project for 2016 that will consist of a mobile exhibition
display that will educate children of all ages about Addie's life. The three dimensional display with movable pieces will
highlight her life from her rural routes to her national status and involvement with Women's Institute and other groups.
Donna Young from Manitoba WI extended an invitation for the 21st Triennial Convention to be held at the Fort Gary Hotel
in Winnipeg from July 10-14. 2018. PEI President Jacquie Laird and I will be attending the next FWIC full board meeting,
June 17-19, 2016 in Brant County, Ontario. On March 1, 2016 Provincial FWIC Memberships fees are due.
By the time this is read we will be congratulating the winner of the Adelaide Hoodless Canadian Women of the Year Award.
Best Wishes to the Winner.
I came home better informed on all the work that takes place within the FWIC Organization.

Fall Workshops
Environment Report Our wonderful environment is all around us and it's easy to do small things to make a difference. Consider starting some seeds
to plant any size of garden this year, or adding a variety or two you can process to keep over next winter. And share your
knowledge with the next generation! Check out some Convener Kits such as Composting 101, and the whole Gardening
Series, for ideas and information to share with your Branch.
Provincially, the Fall saw many meetings hosted by the Environmental Advisory Council regarding a provincial water act,
many of which I was able to attend. Informative presentations were made by groups and individuals, and many are on the
water act website, along with much other information: http://www.gov.pe.ca/wateract/ This spring will have two opportuni-
ties for Islanders to make their opinions known on environment-related topics: public consultations related to the first draft of
the Water Act and a new Island Energy Strategy. Stayed tuned and details are often at the Provincial Government web-
site: http://www.gov.pe.ca/
Spring also means the snow will melt and it will be time for the annual Women's Institute Island Roadside Cleanup. More
details in the Notes and News in upcoming issues. Looking forward to spring, and tidying up our beautiful Island a bit!
-Chris Ortenburger, Environment Convener
Fall Workshops were a huge hit with a hands on French bread making session with Chris Orternburger,
carved pumpkin decoration demonstration by Wendy Jones and a healthy cleaning products session with Marion
Copleston. Each session was held in Wellington Legion, in Wellington on October 27, Farm Centre in Charlotte-
town on October 23 and St. Joachim’s Hall on October 29 in Vernon River.
Festive Country Christmas
Sharon Stewart of
Prestige Floral led the
evening’s session on
numerous Christmas
decorating ideas.
This year’s event was
held in November at the
Credit Union Place in
Summerside.
Decorating ideas using a recycled
outdoor barn window, cinemay
wreath, and candle inserts proved to
be popular as creative projects
among the packed room of WI
members and their guests.
