Introduction

The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education’s (ICE) purpose is to provide accessible, flexible and meaningful education to adults throughout their lives.

Irrespective of whether you are taking your first steps in higher education or progressing to mid-career postgraduate study, ICE’s aim is to form supportive communities of learning where expert teachers and adult students work together as peers to achieve personal and collective educational goals.

Studying at ICE is characterised by friendly groups of committed students engaging with important learning against the backdrop of the resources of one of the world’s best universities. We promote evidence-based exploration, critical enquiry and free speech in welcoming and respectful classrooms. Our discussions extend over tea breaks, cakes (lots of cake!), garden strolls, informal lunches in Madingley Hall’s dining room and globally across our virtual learning environment. ICE is a place where professional networks are formed, friendships made and learning cherished.

In our Undergraduate Certificate and Diploma groups you may find students exploring a new discipline for the first time, those making their way back into education or people formalising their longstanding interest in a subject area. In our postgraduate classrooms you may encounter professionals accelerating their vocational trajectories, people changing career direction or, perhaps, students preparing to progress to doctoral-level study. This year will also see ICE deliver our first Postgraduate Apprenticeships as we continue to evolve our course portfolio to respond to the fourth industrial revolution and associated technological disruption. All of our award-bearing courses result in a recognised University of Cambridge certification.

Each student at ICE will have their own story, their own motivations to study. Introverts and extroverts, scientists and artists, young and old, alumni of elite world universities and graduates from the University of Life – all are welcome at ICE and all enrich one another’s learning experience. Together we will develop academically and personally.

My colleagues and I look forward to meeting you and learning alongside you as fellow members of Cambridge’s unique life-wide learning community.

Why study with us?

Why study with us?

Join adults from all over the world to be taught by leading University of Cambridge academics. The range and variety of subjects means that there is something for everyone.

An exceptional team of tutors

You will have the chance to learn from some of our finest academics, and from each other. Being part of a community of intellectually-curious adults from all walks of life means that there is no shortage of people willing to share new ideas and opinions.

A sense of community

Studying with us can simply feed your love of learning, but there are many additional benefits. People make new friends, expand their professional and social networks, and become part of a very special learning community.

Whatever your motivation, our aim is to make the learning environment a welcoming, supportive and rewarding one for all. The Institute is a part of the University which is accessible to all, regardless of previous study or educational background. Our interactive sessions recognise, and value, the range of experience our students bring to the classroom.

Discussion and debate bring the subjects to life, conventional wisdom is challenged and fresh possibilities explored. Peer-to-peer learning adds to the tutor’s own input: inquiry and interaction is encouraged.

Staff are on hand to ensure you are supported during your course whether that means a reassurance that we have noted any special requirements, or simply to answer any queries during your course. We are committed to ensure that your experience is the best it can possibly be.

Gain a Cambridge qualification

All our award bearing courses lead to a University of Cambridge qualification, which is accredited under the nationally recognised Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS).

Our Master of Studies (MSt) degrees are fully matriculated which means you join a College and become a Cambridge alumni after graduating. ICE is one of the few places at the University where you can study for a Master’s degree on a part-time basis.

Our teaching staff

Our teaching staff

With so many excellent lecturers and differing approaches, you will discover the richness which characterises the ‘Cambridge University experience’.

Our Academic Directors

These subject specialists work to produce the syllabuses for our award-bearing courses in conjunction with our expert panel of Tutors. Drawing on an understanding of current trends, long-standing contacts with other senior academics and knowledge of rising stars in their specialism they select and work with tutors to create the fantastic courses available at ICE. They also agree the scope of each course and oversee the content.

Our Tutors

Academic Directors at ICE work with a panel of expert tutors to deliver our award-bearing courses. Many of the Tutors have taught at the Institute for a number of years, but we also promote the research of the University by training post-doctorate students in teaching. Many of these panel tutors also teach on our portfolio of short courses.

I was working as an architect but felt I was vegetating and needed to apply myself to something new. I was interested in history, so the Archaeology courses at ICE were an obvious choice, followed by courses in Egyptology and Building Conservation. As a result of these studies I was able to progress my career to work in the building conservation sector of architecture and was also accepted by the Institute of Archaeology at University College London to study part-time for a MA in Egyptian Archaeology. This led to me being accepted by Birmingham University to study for a PhD in Egyptology which I was awarded in March 2017. ” Ian Taylor, Archaeology and Historic Building Conservation

Our students

Our students

As a student at ICE you will be encouraged to discuss, debate and develop your own understanding of the topics raised in class and in your assignments.

A community of students

A typical student is likely to be exploring a new discipline for the first time, finding their way back into education, or taking an in depth dive into a subject they have been passionate about for a long time. Our student pool also tends to be filled with professionals looking to progress or change their career trajectory, or preparing for docoral-level study.

It might be that you have not been in a classroom for many years whilst others may already have a degree or qualification. Whatever your background, ICE will support you in your study and make sure you get the most from your qualification. To help with this, our learning community is supported online in our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

We welcome adults of all ages. Most are UK-based, but we find increasing numbers of students travelling from other countries. Our International Pre-Master’s programme for example is specifically designed to give international students the skills they need to go on to study at postgraduate level in the UK.

Our students come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Whatever a student’s motivation for study, all are welcome and together bring a fascinating mix of ideas and experience.

I am a secondary school History teacher with a particular interest in improving my students’ knowledge retention. The support from ICE and our tutors on the MSt in Advanced Subject Teaching is truly amazing. As professionals and part-time students, we are given enough time to study and prepare for our essays, there is always additional support should we require it and the people behind the course understand our challenges. From the moment I joined the course, the way I approach teaching changed. I want to share my knowledge with colleagues and students and make a meaningful difference in my school. I am now looking to move into a role with more responsibilities especially in the area of curriculum planning and assessment. ” Alexia Michalaki, MSt in Advanced Subject Teaching

Other study pathways

Other study pathways

If you want to find out what it’s like to be a student here, why not try a short or online course? It’s a great way to gain an understanding of what it feels like to be a student at ICE. Many of our students start with a short course and go on to study award-bearing courses with us.

Short courses

Alongside our award-bearing programmes, we run a number of short courses, many of which take place at our headquarters, Madingley Hall. Come for a day, for a weekend, or regular weekly classes. Most courses require no background knowledge, just an interest in the subject area. Our short courses are taught by leading academics in small, informal groups. It is possible to stay at Madingley Hall during your short course study.

Online courses

If you want flexibility, or are not within easy reach of Madingley, why not try one of ICE’s Online courses? These allow you to study at any time, wherever you are in the world. You will receive personal feedback on your work from an expert tutor, and join a growing community of online learners in our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

International Summer Programmes

Local, national and International students attend our open-access programmes on a residential, or non-residential basis. Some people stay for all six weeks, others just for one or two. It’s possible to attend a weekend course just before, or after a number of Summer Programmes, as teaching takes place on weekdays. Programmes include Literature, Creative Writing, Shakespeare and the Renaissance, Art and Visual Culture, Ancient and Classical Worlds, History, Medieval Studies, Science, Business and Entrepreneurship and Interdisciplinary Studies.

The MSt in Creative Writing gave me the confidence I needed to finish my debut novel. I learned the discipline of writing to deadlines, as well as understanding that first drafts exist only to be improved, thus removing one of my biggest blocks to actually finishing my work. Many of the writer friends I met on the course became sounding boards during the early stages of drafting. Without the course, I wouldn’t have had the courage to submit my then unfinished novel to the Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize, which led to an offer of representation from my agent. ” Sara Collins, Creative Writing

Cambridge is a world-leading centre for innovation in electronic patient and clinical trial data. This is underpinned by an extensive and vibrant community of clinicians, researchers, entrepreneurs, and commercial and public sector organisations. There is a recognised

shortage of the appropriate technical and practical skills in the workforce to effectively utilise the opportunities presented by healthcare data. This course has been designed to meet the skills gap in the management, handling and utilisation of healthcare data and to develop individuals confident in using healthcare data for innovative and/or commercial applications.

The programme will develop individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to understand and critically evaluate electronic healthcare data in a manner compatible with innovative commercialization opportunities. Students will be provided with the skills and knowledge to execute the entire process from initial curiosity driven healthcare data queries, through to data analysis and visualization, healthcare systems analysis, change management, and developing skills for data entrepreneurship, commercialization, and digital marketing in a work-relevant and practical manner.
