News Letter from ILASS-Int. (Sept.03,2012)Activities of Regional ILASSILASS-Europe Prof Golkap reported that ILASS Europe was doing well. The last regional meeting, held in September 2011 in Estoril Portugal was well attended. The Eisenklam travel award was opened up for regional support in addition to travel to ICLASS. 4 students were selected for support, but in the end 1 student could not participate due to Visa issues, hence 3 support awards were given out. It was noted the next conference would be in Chania, Crete in Sept 1 – 4, 2013

ILASS Asia Prof No summarized the ILASS Asia status, noting good participation of 100+ persons at the recent 2010 (Jeju) and 2011 (Taiwan) meetings. The 2012 meeting was not held per ILASS Asia policy to not hold a local conference in the year of ICLASS. Some discussion was held regarding the varying strategies for naming the conferences by each region. This could be considered by the ILASS International Board for a policy point. The inclusion of India was noted and it was pointed out that 1-2 more years would be needed to secure formal engagement of India in ILASS-Asia. The potential inclusion of Australia/New Zealand was noted. It seemed these regions could affiliate with the Americas or Asia sections. Some thought was given relative to ILASS-Asia/Pacific which then might include these two countries. The consensus was that as long as they participate it may not matter if they are formally aligned with one region or the other.

ILASS Americas Chair Rudi Schick summarized the status of the ILASS Americas, noting strong membership and meeting participation. The next meeting in Pittsburgh in early May was noted as the 25th Annual ILASS conference. It was noted that $20,000 was provided to 10 students on the basis of their travelling to ICLASS 2012 and presenting their work.

Ultra-fast Structured Laser Illumination Planar Imaging (SLIPI)

for single-shot imaging of dense spraysE. Kristensson*, E. Berrocal, M. Richter, M. Aldén

Department of Combustion Physics, Lund University,

Box 118, Lund 221 00, SwedenAbstractRecently, a novel imaging technique, called Structured Laser Illumination Planar Imaging (SLIPI), has demonstrated great potential for thesuppression of the multiple light scattering in spray imaging. The method uses a laser sheet which is modulated in the spatial domain.Photons which are directly scattered keep the structural information of the laser sheet; whereas, the photons that have experienced severalscattering events lose this information, resulting in a variable offset on the recorded image. Using a spatially modulated incident light thusenables the directly scattered photons to be distinguished from the multiple scattering intensity contribution. However, to homogeneouslyilluminate the spray, three images are required, where the modulation of the incident laser beam is successively shifted one third of aperiod vertically. By adequately post-processing the three images the multiple scattering contribution can be diminished. However, the timeinterval within which these images are recorded must be short enough to freeze the flow motion, making “single-shot” SLIPI of highlyatomizing sprays particularly challenging. In this article, we present an ultra-fast SLIPI system with the capability of freezing flow motions upto ~600 m/s. The instrument was tested on a hollow-cone water spray, running at 50 bar injection pressure, and high resolutionsingle-shot images, in which multiple scattering effects were efficiently suppressed, were obtained. Such images provides detailedinformation of complex dynamic flow behavior occurring in the dense spray region, e.g. primary and secondary break-ups. In addition, wedemonstrate that the RMS extracted from such single-shot SLIPI images enables statistical investigations of the break-up process as well as abetter estimation of the liquid sheet length.

News Letter from ILASS-Int. (Sept.26,2012)Colleagues:

As past president, I would like to thank all of you for your support and cooperation. We had a very successful meeting in Heidelberg, thanks to the organizers and especially to Eva. I believe the organization is strong and the future looks good, based on the number of attendees we had, and in particular, the participation of young researchers starting out in their careers. There is much to be done in the field of atomization and sprays and hopefully, the support of funding agencies will be there to ensure that the research and development efforts continue.

I also believe that our journal, Atomization and Sprays is doing well and with support, will be the preeminent Journal in this field. We all need to work together to make this a success. I am also going to continue to work on suppressing the poisonous rumors that are being circulated regarding the publisher. This has done nothing but harm our efforts and our community.

I have attached the minutes to our meeting, thanks to Vince McDonell so that we have a record of what was discussed and the resolutions that were put in place. Going forward, we need to keep this information available so that future meeting organizers and the executive committee have something to work with. Please let me know if there are errors or omissions in the minutes or other material.

Thanks again.

William D. Bachalo, Ph.D.President (20010-2012) of ILASS-Int.

News Letter from ILASS-Int. (Sept.28,2012)Inaugural AddressI am Masataka Arai, Professor of Gunma University of Japan, and also a member of Institute of Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems from 1975 at the age of First ICLASS in Tokyo. I had been applied by ILASS-Int. Council Members for the president of ILASS-International. And now, I have been elected as the President (2013-2015) following former ILASS-International president, Dr. William D. Bachalo. The President of ILASS-International is most honorable field work position in my life and its task is hard and important for all the researchers and engineers in the field of liquid atomization and spray systems. Task demand for the president is sometimes too heavier for me. However I will accept the position of ILASS-International President with the best support of all the members of ILASS-International.

As you know, ILASS-International consists of three regional ILASS, ILASS-Europe, ILASS-Americans and ILASS-Asia. Each group of ILASS is keeping own activity and is handling the own academic meeting. Since the origin of our international activity is coming from the activities of these three regional activities, first of all, I will make special thanks for each regional ILASS.

Liquid Atomization and Spray System is a unique concept in the field of science and engineering. Its academic base is coming from fluid dynamics but its engineering application is expanding in many scientific and engineering fields. Then each regional ILASS has different academic base and different application field, where each regional ILASS is developing with different ways. I think this different development of regional ILASS is the strong point of our society.

We have own academic journal named “Atomization and Sprays” published from “Begell House, Inc”. Then, I will make special thanks for the editorial board members of “Atomization and Sprays”. From 2009, its publishing interval was changed from 8 times per year to 12 times per year. It was good news for all the members. Then I will ask you the more substantial support of the journal. We have to gather more good papers to the journal. Good papers are the origin for increasing the impact factor of the journal and resulting that “Atomization and Sprays” becomes the more world-widely distributed journal.

Further, internet communication around the world is most important way of communication, and I will improve the website and home-page of International Council of Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems. However face-to-face communication is also important for deep understanding, or knee-to-knee discussion in the conference is more important to get a new physical idea of liquid Atomization and Spray Systems. Then we need many academic meeting such as International Conference of Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems.

ICLASS-2012 in Heidelberg was the 12th International meeting of ILASS-International. It is the biggest academic and engineering event of our society. Around 250 papers and around 370 participants was gathered there. We have to keep this activity from Heidelberg to ICLASS-2015 in Tainan Taiwan.

By closing my inaugural address, I have to say that, I will make my best effort to keep and expand the activities of our society with your help.I will make deep thanks to the board members of International council of ILASS and Task Committee members of ILASS-Int.
