We are excited to present the 2014 Institute of Sound and Style (ISS) Magazine. In the following pages you’ll find the artwork, activities and reflections of this years Institute

participants that explores Syracuse life. The Institute of Sound and Style, developed by Carrie Mae Weems is the merger of her passion for Art with her commitment to local communities and youth empowerment, by offering a small and talented group of youth the opportunity to develop a creative toolbox and expand their horizon. Our 6-week intensive program started in late June and ran through mid August. Held in a state of the art media lab at Syracuse University, ISS has exposed the youth to exciting career opportunities in the fields of art, music and fashion. It’s a

hip and innovative way to encourage social engagement, out of the box thinking and the pursuit of goals they didn’t realize they could accomplish. To learn more about ISS check out our

website: www.soundandstyle.org or Tumblr: www.ISS101.tumblr.com.

We also invite all our readers/supporters to participate in the ISS experience whether via donations, online and/or social media engagement, letters of support and the sharing of artistic

skill. What makes our program unique is that our kids receive a weekly paycheck based oncurrent minimum wage standards—so that they are earning while they learn.

Your support and generosity helps to make this program a success. If you would be willing to make a tax-deductible contribution of $200, $500, $1000 –or any other amount? It would mean

the world to all involved in the ISS experience.

Your Tax Deductible contribution should be made to: Syracuse Model Neighborhood Facility, Inc.

Jan has been working at Camp Talooli for 30 years currently as Executive Director. She loves her job and plans to be back next year for another round. Living near the camp makes traveling to work very easy. She did not attend Camp Talooli when she was young but she says she still belonged to the program.

Tom has been attending Camp Talooli for 13 years. He first started at 7 years old. He’s been working for 4 years as camp staff. Tom loves to watch the kids grow and have fun. He believes they are all special in their own way. This will be Tom’s last year as a staff member because he has to get an internship.

Page 10: Institute of Sound and Style 2014

Abby and Sage are best friends! They both like art, archery and cooking. They both like to make new friends and they both hate bugs. Abby (green shirt) is 11 years old and has been coming to Camp Talooli for 3 years. Sage (white shirt) is 10 years old. This is Sage’s first year. They both want to work at the camp when they get older, because they love the positive and encouraging place.

Keith is 11 years old, he has been attending Camp Talooli for 3 years straight. He is looking forward to becoming a staff member at the camp because everyone knows him. All the kids going to the camp are encouraged to take on leader-ship roles and train to be camp counselor or staff. His favorite thing to do is participate in all the games and help cook the megadogs.

O p e n L e t t e r t o o u r C i t y

Dear Syracuse,

I am sick of the quiet racism in my community, and the self-segregation. It’s swept under the

rug because they say it was dealt with some time ago. Such things only seem to be acknowledged when someone famous says a racial slur.

I am tired of the parents who have kids for food stamps and because they were “In Love’’. They

seem not to care about their children. What of-ten happens is that boys take to the street looking for respect and girls take to the corners whoring themselves out searching desperately for “Love”. This becomes a never-ending cycle.

I am disappointed in the fact that some parents have to live the burden of burying their chil-

dren before they turn 20. I was raised to believe that I am suppose to burry my mother and father when they reach old age. That way they could see me graduate high school, go to college and live my life.

But most of all, I’m sick, tired and disappointed of the fact that all of these topics and many

others have people not living life. Unable to stop and smell the roses and most of all smile.

Sincerely, Me

Don’t y’all miss Mattydale? So, Why not stop the Violence?

All the Fighting, Shooting, Child Abuse and Gang Banging?

There will be better opportunities in our community if all of the negativity stops. Why don’t parents care for their children as much as before? Why let the babies have babies instead of making them go to school and graduate, so the graduation rate will increase the gradua-tion rate so they can get a good job? No mother should have to bury their child or lose them to the streets. Syracuse will be a much better place if everyone makes better decisions. Stop following what everyone else is doing and be your-self. Be a role model to our younger generation. Once you prove to everyone that you can do it, others will realize that they can do it too. Everybody can be somebody. You have to try hard enough so you can get somewhere in life. Let’s make our community a safe beautiful place to live.

Dear Community,

We have some problems that we need to adjust. One problem is young girls in the streets having chil-dren. They are barely old enough to drive and they are already pushing baby strollers. They have traded in parks and candy for parties and pot.

The problem is that we are not allowed to be children anymore. When parents are barely more than a child themselves how can they be expected to raise children? SLOW DOWN! Remember how to have fun. Drugs and sex should not be methods of entertainment. Lets learn to love, laugh, and live life.

Sincerely, A child at heart Sierra B.

OF ART

Walking up to this 60,000 square foot building absolutely took my breath away. When I stepped foot into the building I soon became speechless. The art was beyond beautiful. Once you get a grasp of the artwork and the concept you can pull a million stories from it. Alana Ryder is the Curatorial Coordinator of Academic Programs. She was our tour guide for the day and she was great! Alana kept us involved with many questions. ISS saw artwork from our very own Carrie Mae Weems. We looked at the full set of photographs from her series Not Manet’s Type. The work was made in 1997 but it was interesting seeing her in the art plus digging deeper into the mean-ing of it. The Johnson Museum Of Art has a diverse collection of art. From Asian and American Art to prints and drawings plus everything in between. The building was built by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners who recieved a commission to build the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art on the Cornell University campus. This was the third museum building the company created and was the most complex. You can visit and take tours for just $1.50! For more about the museum and cool facts visit their website: Museum.Cornell.edu

ISS youth got a chance to expand on what they learned at the Johnson Museum and make monotypes. A monotype is a cross between a painting and a printing process. We worked with professor Dusty Herbig from the SU printmaking department. We painted on a non-porous surface such as a sheet of glass or a zinc plate with lithographic ink which is oil based. Afterwards it’s transferred to paper through the use of the printing press. After the paper has been printed on, the surface of the plate is re-manipulated and another print can be pulled from the plate. This is called working with “the ghost”. As a group we worked together to create a series of 9 plus a portfolio, each one unique in style.
